I remember eons back reading the entry in Dave Marsh's original Book of Rock Lists and when the Who was mentioned the only comment was "Dressed the part."

Bill Russell is up near the top of my wish-I'd-seen-him-play list; along with Jim Brown, one of the few non-baseball players on there.

Oh no NN, we’ve been watching the original series and just passed the ep where she sings a song for the lonely engineer while he drinks poisoned milk. Such a presence.

Our Uhura is far beyond the stars now. In January 1967, Ebony declared Nichelle Nichols the first Negro astronaut, a triumph of modern day television over modern day NASA.

We are here because you were there.

Stepping back a bit to Nichols' passing, a truly lovely thread of memories from Takei

I have been truly moved by the tributes and messages honoring the life and work of Nichelle Nichols, our very own Lieutenant and later Commander Uhura on Star Trek. Although our original series ran only three seasons, we became bonded /1 pic.twitter.com/v1pZtQBU3a

As a kid I only saw Braves, Cubs, and Yankees games because they somehow had national deals with cable providers, but I somehow still knew exactly who Vin Scully was despite ever seeing very very few Dodgers games. Loved him.

Oh, we’re all telling our Vin Scully stories? Alright, here’s mine.

I was working for a radio station in LA and helping where I could. They asked me to call Vin and get him ready to be on the radio in the next few minutes…

that absolutely awful slaphead cunt with the moustache from the recurring oxo family ads in the 80's. Can neither remember his name, nor do I care to find it. Special place in hell for people that accept gravy that looks like sewerage mixed with wallpaper paste.

calzino, Saturday, 6 August 2022 00:56 (three years ago)

That'll be Michael Redfern you're talking about, also notable for playing the copper who busts up the house party in an episode of The Young Ones. Plus he was in Terry and June once. Thanks, Wikipedia!

~insert pun here~ (Matt #2), Saturday, 6 August 2022 08:40 (three years ago)

yeah I think he was a bald copper in Filthy, Rich & Catflap as well!

calzino, Saturday, 6 August 2022 08:45 (three years ago)

other people from awful recurring UK television ads like Kris Marshall and Maureen Lipman are probably far more annoying than he was tbf. But I really loathed that oxo family when I was a kid.

Still tickled to see him as the bookstore guy in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I remember first time through I saw his name in the credits I was all "Wait WTF" and then looked for him again on a rewatch.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 6 August 2022 17:10 (three years ago)

Just found that one of my school classmates was in those OXO adverts - and is currently masquerading as some kind of songwriter and producer.

Luna Schlosser, Saturday, 6 August 2022 17:23 (three years ago)

Nice thread on Gulager from an acquaintance of mine:

I had the pleasure of meeting Clu a couple of times. Well, the first time, I didn't actually meet him. I was attending my first movie at The New Bev, back in 2010, I think. He just happened to be there. I kept my distance, because I was in awe of his presence. 1/ https://t.co/sGJ68nFlhR

Wow, Clu stood out even among other frequently amazing quotees of "Splendor in the Short Grass," dispatches from the set of The Last Picture Show: one of those pieces by Grover Lewis that really helped to establish/firm up Rolling Stone's New Journalism cred. Gallagher was very articulate about his ambitions, creative and commercial, and this was the ideal step from TV cowpoke journeyman to big screen Texasestenial star, or at least worth a shot. Somebody should do a streaming docudrama of this report, which earns its approx. 1400 words. Looks like online Stone doesn't have it,but Splendor In The Short Grass:The Grover Lewis Reader is still fairly easy to find. Lots of loose talk on sets and elsewhere back then, though GL's edits are a bit "flinty," as Roy Blount Jr. observed (suck it up, Jr.)https://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/03/books/review/splendor-in-the-short-grass-romancing-the-stoned.html
