WTF with Marc Maron (it's a podcast)

I skipped his most recent tour because it just seemed more "spoken word / this is my story / one-man show" kind of stuff, which is not my jam re standup, but he killed when I saw him I dunno 7-10 years ago, and while I thought his most recent special was pretty slow through most of it, it had two moments ("we brought our own bags" and the turmeric bit) which were the two best things I've seen in anybody's standup in the last few years.

He has at least twice lamented the lack of WholeFoods while on tour.

He's still capable of some pretty great moments, hearing him go deep into grief with Andrew Garfield was a surprisingly good discussion.

I've never been a huge Garfield fan, but he earned some respect from me for just letting the silence sit and not rushing to fill it.

I scrolled to the bottom of the thread and read Jon's second post before seeing his first and for a moment I was thinking 'wow, sounds like Marc's interview with Jim Davis got pretty heavy'

Idk, I kinda enjoyed it once I settled in. I usually feel like I know what Courtney is getting at underneath the hyperactive delivery.

I did complete the Love episode, and yeah, that was a ride. Outside of the stream of conscious delivery "Wow, is this the most name-dropping/starfucker-y interview I've ever heard" was my main takeaway. That full list really is kind of amazing.

Still, as much as she seems like an intolerable person to spend any amount of time with, she does lodge a few interesting things in the overall chaos. Jordan OTM.

That last Tim Blake Nelson episode was good for some Daniel Day Lewis anecdotes. And TBN talking about all the wonderful new music he’s discovered like CocoRosie, Bright Eyes, and Death Grips.

This latest ep with conspiracy historian Robert Guffey on the origins of Qanon was fantastic in explaining stuff for somebody like me who hasn't been knee-deep in that culture.

I feel like the ones with really old guests have a history of being good, even (especially?) when it's a really old person I haven't heard of.

(Richard) Curtis is currently working on another festive release, an untitled film starring Melissa McCarthy, Paapa Essiedu, and Marc Maron, about a workaholic father who tries to win his family back in time for Christmas with the help of a magic genie.

I haven't listened to the podcast for a while, has he mentioned this at all?

I want to know if he's playing the workaholic father, the magic genie, or someone else

Considering all the voice acting he’s been doing, I’d guess he’s the genie

my guess is

Melissa McCarthy = magic genie
Paapa Essiedu = workaholic father
Maron = someone else, maybe Essiedu's boss or something

i still love this show but gotta say, the Hannah Einbinder one was near-unlistenable, just this terrible anti-chemistry

That one was definitely off. Of course, a big part of the problem is Maron's big on getting detailed origin stories, and Einbinder...doesn't remember hers.

...and so he tries to coax something, and we end up with that long awkward af thing about her high school lesbian experiences.

Really felt a generation gap in that ep, I didn't really hear where I could fault either of them - they just both seemed to want very different conversations and Marc's usual tactics didn't really work to pull it back in.

Boy, I felt the total opposite, I thought the vibe of that interview was adorably uncle-y!

I don't think she wasn't into it, it just felt like they were flailing at different conversations and didn't end up in one place long enough to dig in.

Really curious to hear how the Chevy Chase one went, predicting a 25 minute intro from Maron before he even gets to it.

Yeah, it wasn't as much of an intro as I expected, but then again the interview itself was less combative than I expected. Chase still clearly a dick that had no interest in discussing most of what Marc wanted to talk about, but it was pretty tame.

true, kind of amazing how Chevy seems fundamentally incapable of delivering a joke anymore (a decades-long case of the comedy yips if you will), and is in complete denial about his reputation and career.

Frequently asked myself "is he joshing or just senile?" during the interview.

Chase is definitely showing his age (turning 80 next month) in the worst ways. He was way more coherent in his Gottfried pod interview from 2015. He tells those same Caddyshack/Rodney stories there, and it's like night & day.

As Donald Trump has convincingly shown, many people have a secret or not so secret desire to be a toxic asshole.

Given his comments about how he was always the "star of the show" or "the best", I just think he's a huge narcissist that was "fortunate" enough to come up in entertainment in an era where white male behavior like that was tolerated, if not encouraged. As society evolved, no one ever really challenged his toxic behavior, they just quit calling him in for projects and/or cutting him out of them and, like any entitled performer of his era, he refuses to do any self-reflection that might cause him to put 2 and 2 together about why his career stalled out.

I subscribed to Maron+ a couple months ago to get the bonus episodes where Marc and his girlfriend talk about movies sometimes, but leading up to the Chevy episode he and Brendan have set the stage for it in their bonus episodes so well—what happened before and after the tape was rolling—that I kind of don't need to listen to the actual interview (I'm a Chevy Chase hater anyway, so I likely was never going to).
