Not to be a broken record here, but I think the reason a lot of that “good man” stuff doesn’t catch on is because it’s focused on how to “be good.” That’s just not an appealing hook unless you already have a very deep need to be seen as good or to feel that you are a good person, in which case you’re already probably not who needs to read those books. Peterson tells appealing stories and gives people ostensible tools to improve their own lives. I would like to think that there’s a way to do that without stoking the worst kinds of resentments and fears, and that perhaps the self compassion underlying it could even improve compassion for others. But I’m saying there has to be something that appeals to self interest and not just “do better, be a good person.” Because most people are never going to build their entire lives and senses of self solely around being a good person, being an ally, etc., whether you think they should or not.

Owsley Stanley recommended that all meat diet to the Grateful Dead at the time of them recording the 1st lp in LA in 67. & I think they followed it.
NOt really heard what the thought was behind it.
Think Beef was supposed to be the most manly food in Victorian epistemology too. & transfer its man power to those taht consumed it. May have been a thought from earlier times, possibly consciously being revived during teh Victorian era.

Seriously, this guy offers nothing. His morality is conservative Christianity, his tough love shit is anything you’d hear from a parent or friend. He offers bigotry with a professional title.

The notion is not being good for the sake of good for most people. It’s about treating others how you would wish to be treated. That’s not his message. His message is that you should try to strengthen yourself against the lesser hordes. That’s it.

seriously man alive just stop. He tells "appealing stories"...about how everything you dislike is the fault of someone you hate or can be taught to hate. If men who felt insecure or unequipped for life and wanted to be happier, more capable, more functional, the options for doing that are as available to them as they are to everyone else (actually probably even more so).

listened to the podcast mentioned and heard the mention of Owsley Stanley which is much later than i was referring to him from. Hadn't realised he'd stuck with the meat only diet. Need to read the biography of him Bear. Seemed to be an interesting guy independently wealthy or an heir to a fortune or something . Had some pretty esoteric ideas, the word alembic being used for GD instruments came from his interest in Alchemy too.

My first impression of him was that he was doing a Thinking Man's Pick Up Artist routine because it was about incels and 'clean up your room' (so you can get laid) so pretty sure he was garbage from birth.

Literally nobody does, is the thing. They are "concerned" about lots of things and entirely ineffectual about all of them. I only posted French's tweet because I thought "remarkable ignorance with gravely deficient moral reasoning—all delivered with a veneer of faux sophistication" was a pretty good summation of Peterson. But it works almost as well for French et al.

Just for posterity, want to make clear that, in spite of my slightly challopsy posts, I am not one of those "disillusioned former acolytes" - have never owned or read a Jordan Peterson book and am on record clowning him upthread as early as 2018.

yeah ftr I don’t buy this whole “heel turn” narrative that the substack guy is selling. but I did figure there must have been something there that appealed to people (however shitty in their own right) who weren’t angry online gamergate incel types. Henry Rollins has really been leaving money on the table the last few years.

Sometimes I randomly get suggested short Jordan Peterson videos on youtube, and a fair number of them are completely innocuous seeming if you don't know who he is, like motivational cliches about becoming a better version of yourself, admittedly delivered with enough panache that they feel slightly fresh, or videos about how you should enjoy the few years when your kids are very young. I can totally see how someone could get sucked in by that stuff without starting from some kind of reactionary anti-trans position or something.

I feel like if you could diagram Peterson's whole thing it would be a triangle, with one corner being innocuous motivational/life advice kind of stuff, one corner being nonsensical babble about theology and mythology, and one corner being his bog standard reactionary views about gender, politics of "personal responsibility," anti-socialism, etc.

although tbf, while some of the life advice stuff is wholly innocuous, some of it funnels into the reactionary politics as well.
