Mbabane, Eswatini? buildings and terrain look very similar but i have no real landmarks to confirm with

if these are google streetview photos (the first one has the watermark) then that further limits the countries in play, theres only a few african countries with coverage

i do still suspect it's in eastern south africa or one of the kingdoms, there's a lot of places in that region that look like that

Just a query: I wasn't sure whether it was "solved" when people mentioned they were thinking Kampala— what do we consider "solved" here? is it more about someone saying with certainty that it is a specific place and being correct? Or is it guided by mere mention of the accurate place?

Okay! Glad I waited. Numerous posters thinking it was Kampala made me think it best until someone found the exact locale or said it with certainty.

With this one I guessed Kampala pretty early, but not with any certainty whatsoever (and Rob suggested it before me too). I gradually got more sure on it, but wasn't till I found the weird crash barrier that I actually knew (actually the road with the barrier on)

My guess is Marseilles but I don't have enough time to trawl the streets around the migrant / public housing in La Castellane. Looking at the original the trees might be too green tho.

you're right, i was looking on my phone and the paving stones didn't look offset, but yep that could be uk paving. still think the building's too shoddy.
