it'd be so much easier if *everybody* could just vote themselves a pay rise

The @UKLabour was formed by the trade union movement to give working people a political voice

Workers face a cost of living crisis. Rail workers @rmtunion are fighting cuts to pay, job, pensions & conditions

Come what may, I will be on a picket line supporting workers tomorrow https://t.co/hd4AogsjMh

Really fucked.

I have people calling me up in tears because they have been told by their estate agent they have to agree to 13%-20% increases in rent.

We need to end this now! PRS rents need to be regulated. https://t.co/VUuwtZJK34

Pray for the guillotine for this lot every day.

Michael Green sold a "toolkit" for $497 which promised buyers earnings of $20,000 in 20 days. Upon purchase, the kit was revealed to be an ebook, advising the user to create their own toolkit and recruit 100 "Joint Venture Partners" to resell it for a share of the profits.

I heard some snivelling Tory shit use the term "transferable skills" in relation to their strategy to cope with rail strikes. Was only half listening but this but my understanding of it was that they would happily compromise rail safety just to get those trains running and teach those unions a lesson.

calzino, Tuesday, 21 June 2022 08:45 (one year ago) link

Finally some opposition

Criminal barristers vote overwhelmingly to strike from next Monday - shutting down courts - in their dispute with Govt over legal aid funding (the cash that pays for defence, allowing many trials to get on). Decision comes after @TheCriminalBar ballot

The government response to this is pathetic, just so feeble, imagine sending out a "who he?" drip like Chris Philip to present their case - if you could dignify it with such a term.

what if, a child, an orphan, is due to meet his new family today in London at Euston station. A new start, after his parents were cruelly taken…on 9/11…an end to the horror that gripped the world. But the trains are cancelled. The orphan stands cold, alone, in Crewe. What then?

I had to explain the tube strike to the 17-year-old Ukrainian staying with me. Her father, brother and uncle are all fighting. She’s just got a job in a bar and smiled for the first time last week. Now she can’t go and won’t get paid. ‘But why do they strike?’ she wailed.

it's unfair of me to raise the question because i can't say i've followed most of the BBC's coverage of the strike today, but have they devoted as much time to stories about the hardship RMT members are living with as they've devoted to stories about randoms who've been inconvenienced for a day or two?

Emily Thornberry is pathetic. Completely unserious person. If she can’t be bothered to care about an issue she certainly shouldn’t be going on TV to talk about it.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 21 June 2022 22:05 (one year ago) link

This is a terrible look

Asked about the Labour frontbenchers (PPSs) who defied Keir Starmer to join RMT picket lines, Emily Thornberry dismissed them as "bag carriers," which will be of interest to all PPSs (including her own, if LOTO managed to fill the position). pic.twitter.com/SWpSsv95dT

I see.

Ken Clarke, the ex-chancellor, has warned the rail strikes "cannot be allowed to look successful".

He said if rail workers secure a large pay rise then "vast amounts of the public sector" will be "induced to go in for the same militancy, the same strike action" to get the same.

Lol @ this Britpop scab.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/jun/22/glastonbury-festival-welcomes-back-crowds-amid-rail-strikes

"UK Music’s chief executive, Jamie Njoku-Goodwin, said: “For the thousands of music fans who are so keen to get back to festivals and gigs after two years of lockdowns, these strikes risk causing chaos.

“The strikes come at a critical time for the live music industry and music businesses, which are battling to recover post-pandemic. Fans face a massive struggle trying to get to Glastonbury because of the disruption, which will add to traffic on the roads at a time when we’re striving to improve sustainability in the music industry.

“We need all sides to get around the table to end these strikes and deliver a crucial financial boost to the industry and a summer of fantastic live music.”"

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 22 June 2022 11:05 (one year ago) link

Jamie Njoku-Goodwin is the Chief Executive of UK Music, the collective voice of the music industry. He is an experienced campaigner, a strategic communications specialist and a former political adviser who has held senior roles at the highest levels of Government.

He most recently worked as a special adviser to the Health Secretary Matt Hancock and was previously a special adviser at DCMS. Before joining the Government, Jamie worked for the election strategist Sir Lynton Crosby and as a political adviser for the Conservative Party.

Jamie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of Nottingham, and a Masters in International Relations. He is a trained pianist and conductor, and sits on the advisory boards of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and English National Opera.
