I love how difficult this is. None of these towers contain big names/logo/signs, does that mean we're somewhere non-capitalistic?

StanM, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 10:20 (three years ago)

Guessing China or South America, betting the former

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Wednesday, 15 June 2022 11:02 (three years ago)

xpost great minds think alike!

Woah, that's one hellishly large (and mostly recently built) city. The mountains in the distance give me a bit of a South American vibe, but there aren't many cities there that could be that big - maybe Sao Paulo. If it's not that, then I'm guessing somewhere in China.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 11:09 (three years ago)

Can't see any similar mountains in Sao Paulo aerial shots so I don't think it's that.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 11:16 (three years ago)

To the right there are some lower rise Soviet style apartment blocks, which doesn't align so much with South America, so I'm leaning towards China.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 11:27 (three years ago)

I can't spot a river in the photo posted, but it does have some resemblance to the (in)famous Lanzhou new city.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Wednesday, 15 June 2022 15:46 (three years ago)

There's a river upper left.

brain (krakow), Wednesday, 15 June 2022 16:05 (three years ago)

Just above the very large set of tower blocks on the mid-left edge of the image.

brain (krakow), Wednesday, 15 June 2022 16:07 (three years ago)

I think it's a river there, at least. Not totally clear where it cuts through above that.

brain (krakow), Wednesday, 15 June 2022 16:08 (three years ago)

Tbh I'm pretty certain it is Lanzhou, but happy to find out otherwise, too.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Wednesday, 15 June 2022 16:17 (three years ago)

high 5 @ the table is the table

StanM, Wednesday, 15 June 2022 16:23 (three years ago)

Hell yeah! I think that's the first one I've gotten right in our ILX version of this game, though I've been in the correct country before, if my memory serves. Give me a bit and I'll put one up later today or tomorrow.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Wednesday, 15 June 2022 16:51 (three years ago)

Great work, had no idea if that one was going to be easy or difficult!

ngl— i simply did some googling, re-read an article about Lanzhou that I first read in 2012, then did a quick google maps search and it was clear. couldn’t find the exact location tho.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Thursday, 16 June 2022 11:24 (three years ago)

ooooh what is this article abt Lanzhou??

I was reading it back when in context of a writing project I was working on about terraforming.

Tuesday

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 21 June 2022 17:36 (three years ago)

Great one again! I'd guess this is on a medium sized lake - nothing to protect against tides. But where? I wanna say it feels like North America/Canada maybe?

StanM, Tuesday, 21 June 2022 17:51 (three years ago)

I want to say Panama City purely because it looks like the same view as that John Darwin photo.

(Which it isn't now I look at it but I've typed the first bit already.)

definitely a deciduous zone. is that a mall left front?

somehow this doesn't feel like north america to me, too many apartment blocks

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Tuesday, 21 June 2022 21:06 (three years ago)

oops sorry I forgot, I have one for next tho

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Tuesday, 21 June 2022 21:26 (three years ago)

(not getting anywhere yet - there are a lot of nice cities on lakes all over the world though)

StanM, Thursday, 23 June 2022 17:26 (three years ago)

Not as many churches as I would expect in a densely built area for a Western country. I see one steepled building but it's pretty small.

nickn, Thursday, 23 June 2022 18:43 (three years ago)

why has that building on the left for a massive tower on it? it's not a crane because they aren't building. aerial?

koogs, Saturday, 25 June 2022 14:29 (three years ago)

for = got

koogs, Saturday, 25 June 2022 14:29 (three years ago)

good question - other buildings nearby are higher and would be better locations for aerials

StanM, Saturday, 25 June 2022 17:36 (three years ago)

construction is going on in the bottom panel of the second window though, maybe these locations are linked

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Thursday, 30 June 2022 04:57 (three years ago)

what a peculiar (tower/gate/?) in the bottom right corner

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2022 06:18 (three years ago)

is that a bridge? looks like there's water just next to it

koogs, Thursday, 30 June 2022 06:24 (three years ago)

That tower has a South or SE Asian vibe to me.

nickn, Thursday, 30 June 2022 06:45 (three years ago)

looks like cyrillic(??) script on the biggest building front center

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Thursday, 30 June 2022 12:52 (three years ago)

lots of medium size blocky apartment buildings makes me think eastern europe

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 13:17 (three years ago)

how many km across does that lake/river look?

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:11 (three years ago)

not having any luck with eastern europe cities on a wide river or lake, where else looks like that?

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:34 (three years ago)

New Rochelle???

I_Got_Loaded, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:39 (three years ago)

oh lol so it is

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:49 (three years ago)

new york is basically eastern europe, in my defense

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 14:50 (three years ago)

There's very clearly a city of some size in the distance— those aren't mountains.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Thursday, 30 June 2022 15:29 (three years ago)

what the...? wow

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:24 (three years ago)

yeah i completely missed the horizon line having city buildings in the 2nd photo

ciderpress, Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:30 (three years ago)

ok, the difference between high and low tides there is only 8 ft (2,4 m), not much needed re: dams/dykes etc

StanM, Thursday, 30 June 2022 17:31 (three years ago)

all of my assumptions were wrong based on that alone - I r dum.
