XP!

Floyd Gondolli: I'm not a complicated man. I like cinema. In particular, I like to see people fucking on film. But, I don't want to win an Oscar and I don't want to re-invent the wheel. I like simple pleasures, like butter in my ass and lollipops in my mouth. That's just me. That's just something that I enjoy. Call me crazy, call me a pervert. But, there's one little thing that I'mg going to do in this life and that is I'm going to make a dollar and a cent in this business.

His role in Hard Eight is one of my favorites of the last 30 years. I saw it without knowing he was in Secret Honor and sat there astounded.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 June 2022 17:26 (four years ago)

last year i rewatched Midnight Run, which came out like 40 years ago, and was astounded that PBH looked just as old back then. i guess he was already in his 50s by that point. great actor.

na (NA), Monday, 13 June 2022 17:35 (four years ago)

oh what a great actor, like George C Scott his presence could elevate an average movie into a great one that you re-watch umpteen times.

calzino, Monday, 13 June 2022 17:47 (four years ago)

So good and yet underused. I always expected him to get more leading actor work on the back of his incredible PTA roles, and that never seemed to happen, or at least not often enough.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:15 (four years ago)

I mean Hard 8 is not a great film by any measurement but he’s incredible in it.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:16 (four years ago)

yeah it would have been been a completely forgettable b movie without him.

calzino, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:24 (four years ago)

^^^

just in case you think that was sarcasm - it's not intended as such!

calzino, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:37 (four years ago)

i always understood secret honor to be a film made of a play -- the playwrights converted it to a script -- and assumed that PBH had developed the role on-stage and had been in theatre as much as film, but i can't find any online evidence for any of these facts: that the play was staged, that PBH played in it -- or that did he did much theatre work at all

mark s, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:39 (four years ago)

i first saw it at the london film festival and altman did a Q&A but i can't remember a single answer or even question

mark s, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:40 (four years ago)

From IMDB:
Actor Philip Baker Hall reprised his role as Richard Nixon which he had originated on stage at the Los Angeles Actors' Theatre in 1983.

Chris L, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:43 (four years ago)

it does seem like a play made to a tv movie and he seems comfortable enough with the material to do long unedited one-takes, but god knows.

calzino, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:44 (four years ago)

xped!

calzino, Monday, 13 June 2022 18:44 (four years ago)

lol cheers, my fu was v weak there

here's a rundown of his theatre-work (not lusted on wikipedia at all): https://www.abouttheartists.com/artists/307034-philip-baker-hall

what a fucking legend PBH was, he made anything better by an order of magnitude. One of the all time greats. Shit.

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 14 June 2022 00:40 (four years ago)

Noticing again in that Boogie Nights clip Robert Ridgely losing it in background when PBH goes into the "I'm not a complicated man..." bit.

yeah I don't agree with these remarks. I'd say it's studied and cloistered and wears its influences too loosely like a lot of first films, but it's a good film; for a while it was my favorite PTA.

OTM. Something about old school cinephilia that still gets to me. One of the reasons I enjoyed my recent viewing of Monte Hellman's Road to Nowhere so much.

Something I often think about but can't really imagine is what a handful Bardot must have been for him during their brief relationship.

I am heartbroken to share this..the @NewsHour’s beloved long-time Friday night analyst Mark Shields, who for decades wowed us with his encyclopedic knowledge of American politics, his sense of humor and mainly his big heart, has passed away at 85, with his wife Anne at his side. pic.twitter.com/d68SZiGQJf

Aww man, RIP

He was there well before Brooks, it was David Gergen before that, who was slightly less obnoxious

Apparently confirmed by his daughter on Facebook…disco and hip hop legend Patrick Adams. Producer of tons of classic underground NYC gems. Cloud One’s Atmosphere Strut and Disco Juice and Bumblebee Unlimited’s Lady Bug are just a few of the classics.
