His role in Hard Eight is one of my favorites of the last 30 years. I saw it without knowing he was in Secret Honor and sat there astounded.

last year i rewatched Midnight Run, which came out like 40 years ago, and was astounded that PBH looked just as old back then. i guess he was already in his 50s by that point. great actor.

oh what a great actor, like George C Scott his presence could elevate an average movie into a great one that you re-watch umpteen times.

So good and yet underused. I always expected him to get more leading actor work on the back of his incredible PTA roles, and that never seemed to happen, or at least not often enough.

I mean Hard 8 is not a great film by any measurement but he’s incredible in it.

i always understood secret honor to be a film made of a play -- the playwrights converted it to a script -- and assumed that PBH had developed the role on-stage and had been in theatre as much as film, but i can't find any online evidence for any of these facts: that the play was staged, that PBH played in it -- or that did he did much theatre work at all

i first saw it at the london film festival and altman did a Q&A but i can't remember a single answer or even question

it does seem like a play made to a tv movie and he seems comfortable enough with the material to do long unedited one-takes, but god knows.

yeah I don't agree with these remarks. I'd say it's studied and cloistered and wears its influences too loosely like a lot of first films, but it's a good film; for a while it was my favorite PTA.
