broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Sunday, 12 June 2022 18:58 (four years ago)

Thank you! I wish I had used slightly taller stretcher bars. I would be fun to make a life size person

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Sunday, 12 June 2022 20:41 (four years ago)

*it!

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Sunday, 12 June 2022 20:41 (four years ago)

if i buy it am i allowed to hang it up horizontally?

budo jeru, Sunday, 12 June 2022 20:49 (four years ago)

If you buy it I encourage you to do whatever you please with it. It does look like a star fighter from one side!

a friend of mine mentioned buying it last night, but I haven’t heard back since then. I’m working on a new one now anyway, much smaller. I’m Feeling extremely productive since i stopped drinking (a month this Wednesday) and tapered off my antidepressants. All of that has just been replaced with absurd quantities of coffee

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Sunday, 12 June 2022 21:05 (four years ago)

That is a genuine masterpiece, if I lived in the same continent as you I'd give you all my food money for it, then gift it to the next of my friends to marry just cos I could never deserve such a thing

The Speak Of The Mearns (Jonathan Hellion Mumble), Sunday, 12 June 2022 22:45 (four years ago)

haha, well, i mean that's very kind of you but I could never accept your food money as my food money, it's not right <3

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Sunday, 12 June 2022 23:03 (four years ago)

our money is no good here, by which i mean, we don't have any money

two months pass...

that top image is a drawing of egon schiele's self portrait (grimacing), 1910, and the second image is my version of Chris Kilip's photo from 1983, (Simon Being taken to sea...)

Karl Malone, Thursday, 15 September 2022 01:41 (three years ago)

Nice! Last two look like self portraits loosely in the style of Schiele?

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 15 September 2022 03:25 (three years ago)

strong process bro

ass kicking detected

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 15 September 2022 05:11 (three years ago)

these are great

corrs unplugged, Thursday, 15 September 2022 10:39 (three years ago)

hey, thanks you all!

xp lavator i have definitely been looking at my Schiele books a lot, recently. third from the bottom is the one i'm working on now, and although it's a bit of a mess i have been trying to incorporate elements of his self-portraits, like relatively clean lines, flat washes of color for clothing (sometimes), clearly delineated backgrounds and foregrounds.

i've been drawing a lot more, recently. i need to get back to the store and pickup a broader range of colored pencils because my current set (pack o' 24, prismacolor) is not cutting it

Karl Malone, Thursday, 15 September 2022 15:05 (three years ago)

oh and that top one from that post above is just a copy of Schiele's Grimacing Man (self-portrait) from 1910, trying to pick up something from him via osmosis. what's crazy is that the original was made using gouache, watercolor, and charcoal.

schiele is pretty much my very favorite painter, i think. that dang spanish flu took out a real one

Karl Malone, Thursday, 15 September 2022 15:13 (three years ago)

a couple more from early summer

i actually like that bottom one, despite the sloppiness. that was the last drawing I did using chalk/pastels as the source of color. too fucking messy. but in this case it reminds me of the horrible feeling of robotripping

i'm kind of in the uncanny valley between abstract and a realistic portrait, so apologies if that's just incredibly fucked up looking. i am sick of looking at this guy

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 03:12 (three years ago)

(gotta light?)

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 03:13 (three years ago)

spent some more time on it. i don't like it, but it's the first time i've tried painting a face with much detail and i hope that my subsequent tries will be better. also this is a funny painting to put in dark windows imo!

i don't know how i managed to use a camera setting that produced the moiré effect, but i did it. also i should probably let the paint dry before taking photos. i am the fukken woist

Karl Malone, Sunday, 2 October 2022 19:20 (three years ago)

man, i fucked up the finger spacing, too. that's a more serious problem, i have to fix that. god i'm the laziest

Karl Malone, Sunday, 2 October 2022 19:28 (three years ago)

that is super cool Karl!

corrs unplugged, Sunday, 9 October 2022 16:41 (three years ago)

thank you corrs! i have a long way to go on faces but ya gotta start somewhere!

i just started this fun saturday workshop for October. no one else signed up so it's just me, 2 instructors and a model doing a pose in a nearby park for 3 hours (with breaks for the model and check-ins with the teachers every 15-20 minutes). the 2 instructors are really awesome and i'm very comfortable with them and want them to be my friends after the workshop. i feel like i'm going to learn so much this month. :)

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 October 2022 20:55 (three years ago)

i realize that some people would have done a lot more in 3 hours, but for me this was like speedpainting. i have a few more things to fill-in (sky, chair, and grass clumps) but i liked how being forced to move so fast leads to a certain level of detail. I'm happier with my trees at the top than i have been about trees i've spent 10x the amount of time on.

the nicest thing is that they were both asking if i planned to finish it and seemed genuinely interested to see what it looks like at the end! that's the kind of encouragement i will gladly pay $200/month for

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 October 2022 21:05 (three years ago)

If I could be so presumptuous as to offer an opinion on the face-and-arms piece above, the arms and particularly the fingers are where the work comes explosively to life for me. The face looks too concerned with accuracy whereas the hands are free, and reimagined in an exciting way. Can you block/break the face in a similar way?

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 10 October 2022 21:36 (three years ago)

you may be 100x more presumptuous than that, and it wouldn't bother me at all!

i have been dying to break up that face ever since i made it, and have been thinking of different ways to do it. it's been nice to let it sit for a few days because now the oil is in a state where i can either revive it to a zombie state with linseed oil and blend a bit with previous colors, or paint over it entirely. i'm gonna bust out the ol' scraper too

a few of my friends have recommended guoache and i finally gave in and purchased a cheap-ass student kit!

https://i.imgur.com/80Rhwuu.jpg

i loved it. when i first started using oil i bought a bunch of the very worst student quality and figured that if i ever made it to the end of the paint and still wanted to go on, then i would "deserve" to buy better paint. i don't know why i always feel the urge to prove that i have to spend some money. but i feel the same with gouache. i have enough to last a few months, and hopefully by the end of that supply i will still be excited about and ready to get some better quality

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 12 October 2022 23:38 (three years ago)

GO-U-ACHE

GO-YOU-ACHE

i will remember how to spell this

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 12 October 2022 23:39 (three years ago)

I say you deserve that quailty gouache right now, great colors!

corrs unplugged, Thursday, 13 October 2022 09:24 (three years ago)

i used cheap gouache for a long time, but upgraded to expensive stuff and it is more enjoyable. it's satisfying using pigment so rich and bright it makes you wanna eat it

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 13 October 2022 14:22 (three years ago)

thanks corrs! i think it's the brightest thing i've made in a long time, lol!

karl can i ask which brand you're using now? i am enjoying the lower-grade gouache but now i want paint that i want to eat as well! :)

Karl Malone, Thursday, 13 October 2022 14:37 (three years ago)

i use lukas studio gouache, i like it a lot. it's a little bit cheaper than turner, which i have heard is better, but i haven't tried it yet. really tho i like having a variety of nicer stuff and cheaper stuff on hand to experiment with. i'd feel guilty using the expensive stuff on random pieces of cardboard trash and mixing it with spit and coffee grounds or whatever, which i HAVE done cause i AM wild and crazy

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 13 October 2022 15:03 (three years ago)

nice! i have some lukas acrylic paints and they've served me well.

my secret ingredient is dog hair. every painting includes well-mixed dog hair

gettin tougher, more visceral, keep goin

assert (matttkkkk), Sunday, 16 October 2022 23:20 (three years ago)

thank you, and yes that last one was interesting because it was monochrome (or at least, sort of - "red with white and black" was the mission), and a final, new 20 minute pose after 2 hours of working on another one. the one i spent so much more time on, with all the colors available, is so much worse. it started off bad and got worse. the refresh at the end end, the new 20 minutes with a new pose and a limitation of only red + white/black, that was like plinko

Karl Malone, Monday, 17 October 2022 00:37 (three years ago)

it's also kind of eerie how red + black can come out like blue, but it does, at least after drying
