Have a drink every time the phrase Winter of Discontent is used in the media and you'll be dead by the end of the year.

The Times article is paywalled but is the gist that millions will face power cuts or millions would face power cuts if they don’t delay plans to turn off coal-fired plants?

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Monday, 30 May 2022 11:08 (two years ago) link

I can just about remember the mid-70's power cuts, along with memories of my mum shutting the curtains and telling me + my brother to keep quiet because the tv licensing van was in the area, which seemed a lot more of a dangerous situation because tv licence guy was an evil baddie. Power cuts were a novelty.

calzino, Monday, 30 May 2022 11:12 (two years ago) link

SV - don't know.

Lots of power cuts when I visited family in India. Can't wait to relive my (also happy) childhood.

We had plenty of power cuts in rural Herefordshire well into the 80s, so will be Thatcher nostalgia for me.

There's actually an oil lamp shop round the corner from where I've just moved, seems to sell nothing else! Unfortunately it's only open 2-4 on Saturdays, so I'd imagine queues might be forming from Friday midnight this winter to snaffle the few remaining sources of power available to the nation.

the nation will largely be, as it were, cold lampin'

Someone once told me they overheard him interviewing the Boredoms, and it was all "so are you into kung fu and that?" and similarly incisive questions. Let's see if he can pull out something better for JP!

I don't understand how the UK gets earthquakes when it is slap bang in the middle of a huge tectonic plate

But it’s also right that the country knows how the Chancellor is paying for it. https://t.co/s7ecwP9QpC

Suppose that Paul Mason is selected as a candidate (might not happen) and wins (might happen) --

How do you see his career as an MP going?

My hunch is that he would have some kind of junior post, say in defence policy, quite soon.

I also envisage him quitting something, making a big deal of walking out of a post or committee, on principle, and posting lots of tweets and articles explaining why.

I don't think he will find it so easy to blame Stalinists for what goes on in the UK Parliament, as it contains none. Though that hasn't stopped him so far.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 12:36 (two years ago) link

if there is one person who positively exudes "radical redistribution" it certainly isn't the shadow chancellor and Mason is thick as pigshit if he doesn't know this already. GND has been gutted and the only major spending program proposed by Labour is on nuclear submarines and military expansion to contribute more to NATO "to maintain parity with potential adversaries" and of course Kieth will offer complete impunity for armed forces to commit torture and murder.

calzino, Tuesday, 31 May 2022 13:23 (two years ago) link

Is the plan not to allow the use of imperial units (i.e permit US goods to be sold without relabelling) rather than ‘switching’ from metric to imperial?

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Tuesday, 31 May 2022 13:24 (two years ago) link

I think Reeves will be fuming that they didn't go lower with their own wind tax credit proposal. Reeves is genuinely dangerous and she probably believes they'd have won in '15 if Miliband hadn't gone for compromised austerity

My daughter got a platinum jubilee book about the Queen, she also got a nice mug w/ the Queen's face on it. The book was sent to all kids in the UK and it cost 12 million pounds to do that. Some of her classmates only get to eat during the free school lunch they get.
