Finding out that people who work at No. 10 are a shower of entitled cunts has come as a real shock to me.

Doodles Diamond (Tom D.), Wednesday, 25 May 2022 17:57 (two years ago) link

sad as I am I put the radio on earlier just to hear "Sir Beer Khorma" but must have missed it + all I heard was Blackford sounding like some pompous puritan minister and Starmer sounding like a cunt as per "it's time to pack your bags" he says in that voice.

calzino, Wednesday, 25 May 2022 21:15 (two years ago) link

Ugh, Blackford, he's the worst, pompous puffed up little toad, the SNP need their heads examined making him Leader in the House of Commons.

"Yesterday, I chaired an event a mile away from Westminster where the heads of a few of the charities working at the eye of this storm revealed what they are seeing right now. At food banks run by the Trussell Trust, its chief executive Emma Revie said, people now turn up asking for “kettle packs”: food that can be cooked using only an electric kettle. They take away hot-water bottles and blankets, what she called “artefacts of destitution”. Clare Moriarty, the chief executive officer of Citizens Advice, remembered how a woman waiting in one bureau last week burst into tears. What’s wrong?, asked a member of staff. Nothing, replied the lady, but this is the warmest I’ve been in months."

So yesterday I learned that the Tories have snuck in that if you fail Maths or English GCSE even once you are no longer eligible for Student Loan and can only make it through Uni if you are self funded.

— Planet Beth (@PlanetBeth91) May 25, 2022

jfc. This is the first I've heard of this. So now if you are dyslexic and not funded by family money then forget about further education or just got some bad GCSE results, or a late developer. I really despise this country.

Good for you, Imago.

I went to Hampstead recently. It was a very rare experience - had almost literally never been. It was fascinating. A different world. One thought I had was, basically: usually when you find a 'posh area' there is a 'poor area' about 500 yards away. But here, it seemed, there wasn't. The 'posh area' went on for miles and miles, uninterrupted. I had never seen anything quite like it.

Unsure if the Garden Suburb is the same, though, as what I saw, which was nearer Hampstead Heath Overground and, I think, Hampstead tube.

the pinefox, Thursday, 26 May 2022 10:33 (two years ago) link

Yeah, HGS is more East Finchley - it is a conservation area and very well-to-do (not to mention utterly beautiful to a degree that almost feels occult) but it lacks (thankfully) some of the otiose grandeur you get with Hampstead proper and its ludicrous boutiques, mansions, gurus etc. We were lucky enough to find a flat in one of the courts along the A1 (practically giving my enemies my door number eh) where the rent split in twain is actually cheaper than my dingy Woolwich basement. The HGS project was expressly, and sure, naively utopian during its heyday from the 1890s until the 1930s when my flat was built - the aim was to provide beautiful and harmonious living to all parts of society. What that's meant in actuality is that I am the region's riff-raff in terms of earnings, housing and political opinions (it's a staunchly Tory ward), so obviously a lot of people are completely excluded. If you don't mind being a little out of the way, though, it's great, and you'll never run out of smoked salmon bagels

imago, Thursday, 26 May 2022 10:44 (two years ago) link

There are more working class areas and council estates dotted around where Hampstead Heath overground is (which I don't think of as Hampstead proper,) but between there and Hampstead underground, yeah it's solidly posh to very posh.

I love outer North London - I've lived in various parts of Finchley, only walked through Hampstead Garden Suburb a couple of times when exploring and it is very weird! Congrats.

Oh yeah, the central square with the two mirroring churches (including St Jude's with its upside down crosses) and The Institute aka Henrietta Barnett School at the head of the 'cross' is absolutely terrifying, it's wonderful. HBS is my pick for scariest building in London, especially when viewed from the downhill side

lol ... exactly double what Labour proposed and it's still an inadequate solution in the long term. You probably have got more chance of watered down Corbyn policies with a Tory party that is getting spooked by the polling than a Labour party led by a reactionary cunt with a pathological fear of anything associated with Corbyn.

Meanwhile in LOTO, senior advisers to Keir Starmer have mulled their next steps if Labour loses the election

They are discussing a proposal for Starmer to stay on for a transitional period of six to 12 months to give the party time to learn from mistakes and elect his successor

according to Dodds you need to visit labour.org to find their transformative policies if you are interested in them, but she as party chair doesn't seem willing to talk about them. Such a dreadful interview. If they go into an election campaign empty-handed and give evasive and dismal answers like that, then they will be facing a much worse result than 2019.

calzino, Sunday, 29 May 2022 14:34 (two years ago) link

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 29 May 2022 14:57 (two years ago) link

they totally fucked it in 2019 and the dignified thing to do was not try blame it all on Miliband as he didn't try and make Brown a scapegoat when he fucked it. But these are some of the most dishonest and vile people in UK politics.
