what are the differences between trots and tankies? people I know who call themselves trots seem better than people I know who self-describe as "tankies"

"trotskyite" was a stalinist term of abuse, basically a inter-sectarian slur -- less abusive is "trotskyist" if you prefer to be more diplomatically neutral (you won't start a fight but you may snag yrself a lecture lol) (the lecture i snagged informed me that the sect in question actually considered themselves LENINISTS)

I can remember at some point in the early 80's seeing someone selling the SWP paper outside the bus station + someone yelling "fuck off trot" at them. And thinking: are trots scruffy fuckers in green parkas that sell newspapers.

third-camp trots argued that the soviet union was no longer the cradle of communist advance, and declined to support washington OR moscow

orthdox trots argued that the soviet union (as a degenerated workers' state) deserved highly qualified or critical support, presumably to allow it "regenerate"

tankies gave the ussr uncritical support (viz when sending tanks into hungary)

(there are other ideological differences but this is the context in which the distinction is considered important)

I always liked the sound of the "Trotskyite-Zinovievite Terrorist Center" even though it was a Stalin confection for the show-trials.

i'm really sorry, i was doing that thing again where i make a bad pun based on some archaic bit of slang that, since i'm old, i believe to be in current usage (also it's uk slang ??? apparently ??? most of the uk slang i know i picked up from, uh, ilx, but who even knows anymore how "trot" found its way into my vocabulary). i don't actually think chuck tingle is one of those dudes who is like "nah man you wanna know who really had it right in the soviet union it's TROTSKY" and even if he was in context it's pretty obvious that's not what he's talking about here lol
