as someone off the borad just noted to me, the durham bobbies -- who already said they don't fine retospectively in ref dom cum -- may say something like "well we don't fine retospectively but if we'd known abt this at the time we WOULD have fined him"

just for spite like (i bet they too hate him)

The good news keeps coming

The Queen has been forced to pull out of the big State Opening of Parliament tomorrow.
Palace says: “The Queen continues to experience episodic mobility problems, and in consultation with her doctors has reluctantly decided that she will not attend the State Opening of Parliament

'if pinocchio had human parents' is a weird framing, pinocchio not having human parents is pretty central to the whole pinocchio story. Also looks anti-semitic even though it isn't.

From watching Tysky Sour I just learned a fact I didn't know:

16-year-olds can vote in (local only, I suppose, as yet) elections in Scotland and Wales!

To some people this must have been well known. But I have never heard it mentioned till now.

This is a big deal!

...whereas in England the new id requirements allow oap travel cards as id but exclude young people's Railcards

koogs, Monday, 9 May 2022 21:35 (four years ago)

it's a cross party project: Labour making democratic participation seem like a waste of fucking time to young people, but still hopeful of getting their votes despite offering next to nothing to them. They are supposed be more of an existential threat to the Tories, but I really don't see why these days because I wouldn't want to meet an enthusiastic young Labour voter right now. It's not just young people, it's the poor and low income ethnic minorities amongst them who are a large self-interest group amongst the electorate with no party who will lift a fucking finger for them. Another case of Starmer being the perfect LOTO for a Tory govt.

calzino, Monday, 9 May 2022 22:03 (four years ago)

i hate starmer even more, if it were possible, for making me aware of the existence of the phrase "fixed penalty notice" which even now i'm not really sure what it is

i'm going to wake up in a shiver with the phrase "fixed penalty notice" pulsating across my brain and a ghostly memory of being chased by a large sweaty ham

Tracer Hand, Monday, 9 May 2022 23:12 (four years ago)

it's just a pointlessly prolix bit of legalise to use when "fine" does the same job.

I remembered RLB tonight, and the disgusting treatment of her, and thought: she hasn't commented on KS. Hope she's happy.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 May 2022 19:56 (four years ago)

In the book it's suggested she didn't want to run, and went on a December holiday she was so not arsed about it and Lavery was willing to step in, but she was a McD protege and Lavery was told to no chance and she was persuaded to run. She was quite lethargic and lacking in conviction, but Eagleton talking about her lack of charisma is wrong imo. Is he saying Kieth had charisma? I don't care about charisma, it's her seeming lack of principles (as well as energy) which was bad about her campaign.

calzino, Tuesday, 10 May 2022 20:17 (four years ago)

I still agree that the Starmer dog-whistle campaign against her (whilst running as a unity candidate) at the time was a fucking disgrace. But when you are running against someone who is backed by by crooked property developers and bet366, then you've got to be in the game or don't bother at all. But saying that, the cunt would have probably still won - such a set of guileless simps the majority of the membership were at the time.

During the speeches made by the proposers of the Queen's Speech today, light-hearted, good-natured fun is traditionally poked at the Opposition.

Because it's the Sun, I'm assuming it was simpering but ... yes, it doesn't really do Charles any favours does it?

djh, Wednesday, 11 May 2022 17:58 (four years ago)

I reckon it's mockery masquerading as simpering.

I've just remembered that Lee "people don't need foodbanks" Anderson is the ex-Labour guy who came up on an earlier incarnation of this thread. I think it was previously about him getting caught unaware the camera was still filming while he was setting up a fictitious random doorstep encounter with a pal.

Yes, he gets wheeled out every time the Tories want to say, "Look, thick Northern scum, you can be a Tory too, like this twat".

Doodles Diamond (Tom D.), Wednesday, 11 May 2022 18:38 (four years ago)

He's the kind of ex-Labour MP who quite probably thinks a conservative reactionary like Kieth is some kind of lefty snowflake, which begs the question why did he ever join the party? Well, no it doesn't actually beg any question about his motives tbf!

calzino, Wednesday, 11 May 2022 21:42 (four years ago)

Sunak: "warming to the idea of a (one-off) windfall tax". Good job Labour didn't propose anything more far-reaching than this. That's it now, their only solid policy offer being floated by the tories, lol.

The prime minister said staff were “more productive, more energetic, more full of ideas” when in the workplace with colleagues.

He said: “My experience of working from home is you spend an awful lot of time making another cup of coffee and then, you know, getting up, walking very slowly to the fridge, hacking off a small piece of cheese, then walking very slowly back to your laptop and then forgetting what it was you’re doing.”

This person works from a free office under his home, or, I think, sometimes from his actual home.

All 16 members of Wakefield's CLP executive ctte have resigned in protest this morning. Local party members are understood to be furious that Labour HQ have spurned local candidates in favour of those from outside the area.

well played, alienate all the local activists and local CLP by disregarding the selection process because you want to parachute in someone who fits the profile of “competent” and “normal”. Creagh wasn't popular there but lets just parachute in another robotic melt just in case any possible local candidates don't look right or have their own ideas about what is good for the region.
