by choosing to go after Johnson on this, rather than offer any challenge to policy, he's reduced the whole political conversation to dumb back and forth about nothing. pretty forensic you have to admit

calzino, Sunday, 8 May 2022 18:46 (four years ago)

it's amusing seeing some of those most vehemently calling for Boris to resign are quite rightly saying beergate is really actually a nothing story, but maintaining that partygate should be judged by a different set of standards and rules.

calzino, Sunday, 8 May 2022 19:00 (four years ago)

one of the amusing bits of the Eagleton book that has stuck in my wet-brain memory tonight was the bit where Amy Jackson, Corbyn's political secretary, angrily told Starmer that some messaging he'd prepared for the media involving his slyly prevaricating PV campaign "was like something that an A-level politics student would come up with". And then Eagleton follows up with something like "he never spoke to her again after this incident".

What is happening

EXC with @hzeffman

Keir Starmer is today considering pledging to quit if he is fined over beergate

Close allies are urging him to say that an FPN is a resigning offence

No decision yet but influential supporters say it is the only course of actionhttps://t.co/iB9aWmLfVz

Isn't the real point to be made about all this 'beergate' stuff that the covid rules were ridiculous, unclear, ever-changing, contradictory, illogical, and not to mention a lot of the time pointless?

I was gonna say there is a grim irony to the possibility that it’s the pigs that do for him

gop on ya gingrich (wins), Monday, 9 May 2022 13:13 (four years ago)

Lots that some of us have said in past UK pol threads about Corbyn and his team lacking in competence on this or that issue, but this is really bad (also funny).

xyzzzz__, Monday, 9 May 2022 13:13 (four years ago)

The absolute best case scenario for Starmer here is the police decide he didn't do anything wrong, he waltzes to parliament with "I said I'd quit if I were found guilty, I was not and the prime minister WAS, he should resign", Boris shrugs, life goes on as usual.

"The absolute best case scenario for Starmer here is the police decide he didn't do anything wrong"

the tories might be conflicted between accusing the police of double standards and political interference if they don't fine him and then concern that he's such a gift to them it might be a bad strategy to encourage his demise.

BREAKING- Starmer says he'll resign if he gets an FPN.

Starmer: "I believe in honour...intergity...I'm absolutely clear that no laws were broken...but if the police decide decide to issue me with a fixed penalty notice, I would of course do the right thing and step down."

I think it’s unlikely he will be fined but it’s effectively now open season on any Labour MP who can be shown to have breached the rules, as almost all of them will have done at some point.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Monday, 9 May 2022 16:05 (four years ago)

I’m sure some of them will be fine.

gyac, Monday, 9 May 2022 16:14 (four years ago)

as someone off the borad just noted to me, the durham bobbies -- who already said they don't fine retospectively in ref dom cum -- may say something like "well we don't fine retospectively but if we'd known abt this at the time we WOULD have fined him"

just for spite like (i bet they too hate him)

From watching Tysky Sour I just learned a fact I didn't know:

16-year-olds can vote in (local only, I suppose, as yet) elections in Scotland and Wales!

To some people this must have been well known. But I have never heard it mentioned till now.

This is a big deal!
