From the Ken Burns' Country thread:

that record exec recalling the Judds - “Wynnona had braces & Naomi looked fantastic as always”

Wynonna and Ashley's statement makes it sound grim. R.I.P.

Was Hitler a Hobbit? (Tom D.), Saturday, 30 April 2022 20:52 (four years ago)

Oh man, hadn't seen that at all.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 April 2022 20:58 (four years ago)

Hadn't heard about that yet. RIP Judy. Her track annotations on that Rhino Big Judy set are a treat.

RIP Naomi. Not a country fan by any means, but the Judds have been on my radar. Gorgeous voices and harmonies. “Why Not Me” is a gem.

It’s with heavy hearts that we have to share the passing of Gabe Serbian on April 30th, 2022. This world will miss Gabe as a friend, family member, musician, and artist. He will continue to live on in so many ways and through everyone he has connected with during his time with us pic.twitter.com/vxERoAcS1C

Session drummer Ric Parnell, best known as Spinal Tap's Mick Shrimpton.

"The first question they asked was, 'What do you think about a movie that's going to tear your career apart?' I said, 'You should have made this movie about 10 years ago.' They then asked me what other bands I'd been in, and I said, 'Well, I was in a band called Atomic Rooster.' They looked at each other and said, 'Yep, that's it, you're our man.' "

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 1 May 2022 16:42 (four years ago)

Ah man, bummer news. This moment in this bit from the film just showing him for a couple of seconds with a ridiculous drum solo is easily one of my favorite moments.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 1 May 2022 16:45 (four years ago)

Also some great physical comedy chops -- the room service guy is the focus of attention but I always loved Parnell's reaction in the background after the little collision there

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 1 May 2022 16:52 (four years ago)

...Parnell continued to play for various other bands and artists throughout the 1970s and 1980s including Michael Des Barres and Lisa Dal Bello, as well as providing the drums for the Toni Basil hit "Mickey" among other contributions. At one time, Steve Perry offered him a spot in Journey, but Parnell declined as he was preoccupied with his studio band at the time Zoo Drive, a decision he later regretted.

...

Spinal Tap became a working band, recording a soundtrack album and promoting the film with live shows and a 1984 appearance on Saturday Night Live. The character of Mick Shrimpton having died in This Is Spinal Tap, Parnell assumed the role of his "twin brother" drummer Ric Shrimpton for the group's appearances subsequent to the film.

RIP, French actor - and producer! - Jacques Perrin. I only really knew him from his association with Valerio Zurlini. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/29/movies/jacques-perrin-dead.html

Wile E. Is President (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 May 2022 21:51 (four years ago)

It won't be his legacy, but Parnell had the minor distinction of writing and singing the best song on Atomic Rooster's Made in England:

Out-jazz drummer Allen Blairman. He was on the Albert Ayler box set that just came out this weekend; I was actually supposed to interview him for a piece in mid-April, but it didn't happen.

Was really sad to hear about Gabe from the Locust yesterday.... not a first-name pal, but someone I'd had lunch with a couple times
He was only 44 (May 1st would've been his 45th bday) and I think had fairly recently moved to the country to grow vegetables and shit.. super bummer

Sad to hear of the passing of Second City stalwart and character actor Mike Hagerty, recently seen as the dad on "Somebody Somewhere" on @HBO. Mike had the classic Chicago mustache and accent, and a natural onscreen presence. He always came to play. pic.twitter.com/ZrAxcOBs59

Didn't necessarily know his name, but he was always funny (and I was just about to start Somebody Somewhere). RIP.

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Friday, 6 May 2022 16:28 (four years ago)

rip
he was great in Somebody Somewhere

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 6 May 2022 17:56 (four years ago)

I first saw him at Second City in the late ‘80s or early ‘90s; he wasn’t in that show’s cast, but showed up for the second improv set. This description can’t do it justice, but he and two others mimed fishing. One said, “Anything?” He said. “No.” Pause. “Let’s try the water,” and they re-cast their lines.

Kenneth Welsh, best known as windom earle (recently v good in lodge 49)

gop on ya gingrich (wins), Saturday, 7 May 2022 09:12 (four years ago)

He also appeared in a veritable deluge of Canadian film and TV for 40 years.

ATTN LYNX: I'm so sad to hear about the passing of Kenneth Welsh, aka Larry Loomis, our Sovereign Protector. He was a legend, a powerhouse, a joy to work with, and his spirit and wisdom infused the world of Lodge 49 in so many beautiful ways. A few memories of Ken (1/6) pic.twitter.com/MFtTVJbTGH

Came to post about Mike Hagerty--the guy who bought all of Morty Seinfeld's raincoats!

First I've heard of Kenneth Welsh's death. I think I'm atypical in that I loved the Windom Earle character--one of the saving graces of S2, I'd say.

clemenza, Saturday, 7 May 2022 15:25 (four years ago)

Earle sucked imo but it wasn’t really Welsh’s fault

gop on ya gingrich (wins), Saturday, 7 May 2022 15:52 (four years ago)

Did not put Earle and Loomis together as the same person, that’s nuts.

Unrelated to this thread but why didn’t Brent Jennings get put in everything after Lodge 49?

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 7 May 2022 17:48 (four years ago)

Also: George Perez!

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 7 May 2022 17:49 (four years ago)

Perez has been very ill for a good while, I suspect it was welcome release in the end

Long enough attention span for a Stephen Bissette blu-ray extra (aldo), Saturday, 7 May 2022 17:52 (four years ago)

I was just reading about his involvement in the disastrous 1983 JLA vs Avengers, and the partial art for it is still lovely whatever stage it was at.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 7 May 2022 18:21 (four years ago)

Rest in Peace and infinite thanks George Perez. Art Titan ( no pun intended) from my adolescence. Along with Byrne's FF, Miller's DD and Perez on Teen Titans my monthly mental escapes as a kid were blessed.

Much to my surprise, Jimmy Swaggart's still alive (older than Jerry Lee by a year, younger than Gilley by the same).

In retirement Anderton gave his time and support to the Salvation Army, the Boys’ Brigade, the Scouts and various Christian charities. He also worked with young offenders, was a keen gardener, and continued to write poetry, as he had throughout his life.
