I look occasionally and feel embarrassed for people I know that are posting who aren't just sharing pictures of kids for the grandparents
yeah, that was the saving grace of twitter. You didn't have to explain all your jokes to your relatives.

With FB you have to remember how much algorithmic crap scrambles what you see (unless you are actively going to specific people’s walls to see what’s up)

I worked at Twitter in 2010 during @jack’s hostile return. Some fun memories:For one of my interview panels the interviewers didn’t show up, but I was still hired…👇🏽👇🏽— Nate Nate (@n8agrin) April 26, 2022

ha ha yeah I recently discovered that my friend has a kid the same age as mine, but Facebook hadn't been showing us each other's posts for years

I think fb still pretty massive with older, more conservative types?

Facebook hadn't been showing us each other's posts for years
I split from Facebook when I found out that a friend of mine committed suicide, only I didn't know about it because FB's algorithm had suppressed his posts because he had stopped posting.
― Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 18:43 (four years ago)
yeah, facebook definitely stops showing anything for people you haven’t engaged with

Yeah, we haven't seen a real friendster->myspace->facebook churn in years, although outside the US, other sites have dominance (especially in Russia/China)
Nostalgic for the era when Portugal was on the Hi5 train with the rest of the developing world.
You could send "fives" bestowing the status of "party animal", "supermodel", etc. on your friends.

Left Twitter a few weeks before Musk joined. It wasn't adding anything positive to my life, just sapping time. It was a simple case of "if something isn't making you happy stop doing it". Whereas here on ILX I do get enjoyment from it and respect the posters and their views.
For communication with IRL friends it is mainly WhatsApp now.

I'd do a one-off payment for ilx server maintenance but no way am I paying for twitter.
xp = yeah, think it will be a while yet, if ever.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 8 May 2022 10:28 (four years ago)
right. have contributed to the server fund for sure, happy to do it again. never signing up for a monthly fee ever
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 8 May 2022 10:29 (four years ago)
how about metered usage. every ilx post you read to cost 1 cent, with 60% going to “creators”
Basic Twitter remains free, ability to @ anyone - premium tier.

Using twitter at this point feels like smoking out of a trache hole because smoking is so awesome and cool tbh. But it’ll be better once we get Elon’s new Unfiltered Twitter, that pure tweeting satisfaction.

there will be more voices in the conversation, fewer bots, more good conversations and global collaborations in the digital town square that we've all come to count on
― Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 19:52 (four years ago)
If your town sq is suddenly infested with super predator killer bees, the answer is to let everyone get stung a lot by unfettered bees. If anyone is immune to bee venom, they will survive and breed free of abortions and later repopulate yr town sq. Problem solved. The bees will get bored and go away or die down. Just like covid has.
