Yeah, we haven't seen a real friendster->myspace->facebook churn in years, although outside the US, other sites have dominance (especially in Russia/China)

when it comes to valuation, twitter's a user base, but there isn't an upstart that has made significant inroads into peeling off even a single demographic/group from that user base in a long time. despite all of the right-wing attempts, they've only created small user bases that spend most of their time complaining about what's going on on twitter

i do think twitter has more staying power than other sites because its not just a general purpose social network like those other places its for power users, like every journalist is on there where they gonna go

at least in the usa facebook is looking pretty dead i went on there the other day to see what people were saying about a particular news story and it was a ghost town, like there might not be another facebook/myspace type site on the way up but maybe people dont want that

I mean, their greatest strength (that it's an uncategorized mess with everyone shouting into the void) is also the greatest weakness. There's absolutely no way to suggest new people to follow, or any sort of "topics," outside of aggregation and algorithmic recommendations. Or employees hand-picking popular tweets and manually creating trending topics, which they also do afaict

obvs facebook the company has more on its books than just the social network facebook tho, and popularity of its various properties varies worldwide

yeah, that was the saving grace of twitter. You didn't have to explain all your jokes to your relatives.

With FB you have to remember how much algorithmic crap scrambles what you see (unless you are actively going to specific people’s walls to see what’s up)

I split from Facebook when I found out that a friend of mine committed suicide, only I didn't know about it because FB's algorithm had suppressed his posts because he had stopped posting.

Left Twitter a few weeks before Musk joined. It wasn't adding anything positive to my life, just sapping time. It was a simple case of "if something isn't making you happy stop doing it". Whereas here on ILX I do get enjoyment from it and respect the posters and their views.

For communication with IRL friends it is mainly WhatsApp now.

Bureaucracies can be maddening, but "Let's let a dumb rich guy make up new rules" is not an optimal solution
