Marvin Barnes and Marvin Webster.

I'm halfway through Bad News: The Turbulent Life Marvin Barnes, Pro Basketball's Original Renegade. When I bought it a year or two ago, I suspect I thought I was buying a book about Marvin Webster: longer career, easy to remember because of his nickname "The Human Eraser."

Their rookie seasons were separated by only a year, both began in the ABA, and--although Webster had the nickname that celebrated his shot-making prowess--Barnes was also a proficient shot-blocker. Because of his drug addiction and other issues, Barnes was out of the NBA by 1980; Webster played until 1987.

Barnes was Philly's #2 pick in the '74 NBA draft, after Bill Walton. Denver held his ABA rights, and an agreement was reached whereby if he signed with any ABA team other than Denver, they'd get the #1 pick in the '75 draft. St. Louis signed Barnes, Denver got the consolation draft pick, and they took...Marvin Webster.

"his shot-making prowess"--should say "shot-blocking prowess"

clemenza, Friday, 29 April 2022 23:23 (four years ago)

Denver took David Thompson in the '75 draft. They seemed to have a knack in those days for picking potential superstars who flamed out.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 29 April 2022 23:28 (four years ago)

Thompson was drafted #2 by the Squires.

https://www.prosportstransactions.com/basketball/DraftTrades/Years/1975-aba.htm

clemenza, Saturday, 30 April 2022 01:36 (four years ago)

I guess you could say he was picked #2 because Denver had the "bonus" pick that year. Thompson in fact was the #1 pick of both Virginia (ABA) and Atlanta (NBA). He never played for either team. I was a 10-year-old kid living in Denver at the time, and I don't remember exactly how Thompson ended up signing with Denver, but it was a big deal.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 30 April 2022 01:41 (four years ago)

Yeah, it seems like a semantic issue--Wikipedia says Thompson was #1...Thompson's career was short, and I guess that's what you mean by flaming out, but he did average 22.7 PPG and shoot over 50% from the floor, and he was inducted into the HOF in 1996 (obviously his college career figured heavily into that).

clemenza, Saturday, 30 April 2022 01:43 (four years ago)

He could legitimately have been the GOAT if not for a combination of injuries and drug use. Sadly, one of the things he is best remembered for is ending his career by being pushed down the stairs at Studio 54 and injuring his knee. That said, I remember being at a Nuggets game in the late 80s-early 90s at which he was in attendance. When his presence was announced, he got a standing ovation.

Probably because both played keyboards for the Strawbs but are better known elsewhere. Can never remember which one of them worked with the Bee Gees and which with Nick Drake without looking it up.

Yeah, kind of for me too, though it more falls into the realm of “I can’t help one name making me think of this other” than actual mixing up. See also: Fairport Convention, who I was aware of after Fairground Attraction.
