did you check out the menu at the tavern room at gt, max? i really do think that could be a good option. even if there is a wait, it's a lot more civilized than the bar crush at some places.
^^ haha i thought i had responded to u yesterday w/ questions and then u didnt respond back and i thot i had asked a dumb question or something but i guess i didnt even check--really i just wanted to know if the tavern room is prix-fixe or not--the restaurant is, rite?
― max, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link
tavern rm is not prix-fixe
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link
i guess that is sort of a dum question cause i could just check the website which i did and yes the tavern is an open menu and the restaurant is prix fixe or whatever
― max, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:13 (fifteen years ago) link
oh, if you asked me then i didn't notice! sorry. it's not prix fixe. the dining room is. tavern room is first come, first seated with a nice menu that goes up to the mid-20s for entrees. the current menu is on their site.

(stuffed meatball is outrageous.)
is michael anthony's gt appreciably better than it was when i had lunch in the prior era and it was totally forgettable? it is, cos he is a blue hill guy, rite?
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link
it's not like i've been there a lot, but i've had meals before and since the changeover, and the food is so much better.
― lauren, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link
i wouldn't have recommended it under the old regime.
― lauren, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:19 (fifteen years ago) link
lol i didnt ask u before--sorry i thought i had--checkin out the menu now it does look nice...
― max, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:19 (fifteen years ago) link
thanks, good to hear
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link
if you want a more hip atmosphere, though, then it might not be the place. it's not stuffy, but it is... i guess classic would be a good word. all things considered, i think if you liked blue hill then you'd like gt.
― lauren, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link
who's been to Aunt Suzie's in the slope? forget if i've asked before. it seems so nice and homey.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah im not lookin for hip, i was worried abt it being prix-fixe and maybe a little too fancy... spotted pig seemed ok but i really dont want to wait for an hr and if the foods not as good... f it
― max, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 18:33 (fifteen years ago) link
the room isn't fancy, but the people might be

man opentable dot com is pretty dope but it makes me too tempted to eat at awesome restaurants every night and never have any money

er
Clinton Street Baking Company has a special: $10 for a burger and a beer every night from 6-8. You pay extra for fries but the burger comes with home made potato chips so you really won't need the fries. It's a really good burger--better than Dumont I think.
― saudade, Thursday, 9 October 2008 03:34 (fifteen years ago) link
Aunt Suzie's? I don't think anyone really thinks their food is good. They have longevity, but little else. Better alternatives would be Franny's, Peperoncino, Anthony's, or Bar Tonno. Of course, Al di la is the gold standard for Italian in Park Slope, though it's not typical red-sauce Italian.
― Josefa, Thursday, 9 October 2008 03:47 (fifteen years ago) link
Franny's was v v good.
― ian, Thursday, 9 October 2008 03:58 (fifteen years ago) link
but v v buttery.
wow you guys ate a lot of food since i last read this thread. i couldn't read it all. highlights?
i want to try somewhere new this weekend.

disappointing. i'm a sucker for their schtick. peperoncino is surprisingly good. i haven't been to al di la yet. i imagine it's wonderful, but i have yet to find a standby red-sauce place, so i'm on the search for that first and foremost.

...but I haven't eaten Aunt Suzie's in ten years, so don't let me discourage you. The food might not be bad, just probably not anything special.

right. my hope is it's slightly better than average home cookin.

I probably ate at Aunt Suzie's somewhere around '93.
Haven't been very adventurous about eating options in "south Kensington" since I moved, but Sietsema reviewed this Azerbaijani/Russian place a stone's throw from my apartment. Who would join me for jiz biz and lamb's balls stew?

oo. i love Clinton St. i assume the burger is available at other times as well?
― gabbneb, Friday, 10 October 2008 02:03 (fifteen years ago) link
Yep, they have the burger at brunch, lunch and dinner, but it's $14 on it's own. So the burger+beer thing is a really good deal, like almost half the regular price. Also, on Tuesday nights all bottles of wine are 1/2 price and they are actually pretty reasonable to begin with--mostly under $30.

so i am too lazy to read this whole thread, but let me tell you, the best restaurant in NYC is el taqueria y fonda on 108th st and amsterdam.
i also like the dominican place near me that advertises itself as "friend chicken!!!" & has flashy lights.

I have heard that Joya is good for Thai (it's on Court St. in what I guess is Cobble Hill - sorry for using "BoCoCa" earlier, I just really don't know the boundaries yet)
― Hurting 2, Friday, August 29, 2008 10:47 AM (1 month ago) Bookmark
Turns out it wasn't that good, actually. Mediocre food in good lighting. But it's a cheap way to get that "goin out in the big city" feeling.

i want to reiterate to everyone again for the 100th time JUST HOW MUCH i hate Sea in williamsburg. it ruins my day approximately 4 times per week.

joya, sadly, is the best thai (to my knowledge) in bo co ca.
that doesn't mean that it's good

i am waiting for jbr or lauren to save us all?
― mookieproof, Saturday, 11 October 2008 04:23 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, I tried some other place on smith street and it was pretty average. Joya at least wasn't completely formulaic thai, but it had almost no spice and certain things were all wrong (my supposedly krapow-style dish was swimming in salty brown sauce and my wife's bland seafood dish had american-style veggies).
― Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Saturday, 11 October 2008 04:28 (fifteen years ago) link
dnw.
the only thai close to me is godawful.i guess walking to something mediocre in park slope isn't that hard.
― ian, Saturday, 11 October 2008 04:30 (fifteen years ago) link
THAT SAID, i get thai in manhattan a lot at zabb city (which lauren does not like, but they are vv good on basics and occasionally stellar.)
