what happens in redactle when you have something like "XXX, 000"? or things that are obviously years?
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 19:02 (four years ago)
You can keep guessing the unit before and after commas if you want but don’t think it’s a very worthwhile use of a guess. I did wonder similar when I thought the point of the game was to fill every blank rather than just get the title.
― Alba, Monday, 18 April 2022 19:07 (four years ago)
I got today’s in 29 but once I’d got it I realised I really should have got it sooner.
― Alba, Monday, 18 April 2022 19:08 (four years ago)
> just get the title.
what the what?
never would've got that without looking it up, not a part of history i'm familiar with. i ended up getting the song title at the end and that had a connection to the article title, almost...
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:37 (four years ago)
although it now occurs to me that alba was talking about 'yesterday's' redactle, given that it changes like mid-afternoon.
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:40 (four years ago)
16:00 UTC it changes, which is 5pm in bst.
the one i did was #12 incan emperor
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:43 (four years ago)
Oh yes, I was talking about The Washington Post, which I should have got sooner after spotting D.C. on my eight go, but I forgot about newspapers for some reason despite working for one
― Alba, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:45 (four years ago)
(i looked at the source, there's a gamelist.js which does it right - a base64 encoded list. i decoded them all, and none of them were the one i just did!)
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 21:01 (four years ago)
I thought that I'd stumbled on something very smart by entering 0-9, but then that only works if those digits appear on their own, and long strings of numbers are counted as single words.
― Pomelo Anthony (Leee), Monday, 18 April 2022 21:08 (four years ago)
Redactle #12 in 5 tries, most likely I will never again achieve such a thing in my life
― TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Monday, 18 April 2022 22:35 (four years ago)
Incredible. I got it in 77 after googling the title... is that cheating? Also lost my 110 wordle streak today.
― ledge, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 07:10 (four years ago)
Yeah, my second Wordle fail today: I have no strategy for twin wells.
― mike t-diva, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 08:37 (four years ago)
There is a strategy it's called not hard mode. But for some reason I chose to keep guessing.
― ledge, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 08:48 (four years ago)
I managed to guess it thanks to a little bit of luck but I'm becoming more convinced that hard mode doesn't encourage more strategic thinking.
― Born Sleeepy (Nuxx) (Leee), Tuesday, 19 April 2022 16:16 (four years ago)
I was considering doing a well-breaker, but then decided to go with the first thing that came to mind, and bingo!

This is a fun addition but not sure how much to trust its skill metric!

i've been checking it every day and it's definitely kinda stupid:Your guess cut the number of remaining solutions to one. But there were some other words that could have been better — guessing ROWDY here, for example, will usually eliminate more solutions than FRYER. And you’ve narrowed it down to one possible solution. You should solve the puzzle on your next turn.??? (and it gave my guess a score of 0, harsh. i probably should've tried [what the actual answer was] instead of what i guessed, but it was still only one letter off, and better than the word they chose...)
i get that burning a lot of letters and ignoring your greens and yellows is probably the most "optimal" way to play, but no one plays like that. and it sounds so snobby as it shames you for not burning your second guess on an unwinnable word. fuck off wordlebot! probably would be easy to just program it to play hard mode style until it gets to a point where burning letters would make more sense - weigh winnability vs the need for a well-breaker etc
anyway today's wordle fucked a lot of people up huh, i was the only one in my immediate family who didn't get it wrong

Redactle #13 in 14 - pleased with that
― Alba, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 17:51 (four years ago)
How the hell?! I took 109!
― Born Sleeepy (Nuxx) (Leee), Tuesday, 19 April 2022 18:16 (four years ago)
i gave up after 200ish. had the entire first sentence minus the two important words.
(there doesn't seem to be a way of giving up, but i googled and found it)

― Alba, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 18:41 (four years ago)
I had prophet at 75 and it took me another 145 guesses lol, hope I won't make that mistake again.
― ledge, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 19:05 (four years ago)
Got it (my first full attempt) in 278 - but it should have been 165 (basic spelling error: I wrote “prophesy” - so I thought I had already tried the word, to the extent I was actually looking for clues (here I stand, the Cheater) in the Wikipedia entry in question, blissfully unaware, convinced that it would have to be something very similar…)
― middot • is • my • middle • name (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 19 April 2022 20:11 (four years ago)
Alba, that's awesome! I didn't really think to peruse the punctuation for clues.
― Born Sleeepy (Nuxx) (Leee), Tuesday, 19 April 2022 20:23 (four years ago)
539(!) for today's Redactle!
― Born Sleeepy (Nuxx) (Leee), Wednesday, 20 April 2022 18:11 (four years ago)
Redactle #14 in 45 with 73% accuracy. Woo hoo.

23! Like Alba yesterday the punctuation gave some clues - (██████ ██████ █████. ███████) looked like it could be the Latin name of some living thing, and (█)-█-███████-█████████-█,█-█████-█,█-████-█-██ suggested something chemical, so I started trying food-related words and got there pretty quick
― TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Wednesday, 20 April 2022 21:21 (four years ago)
i got all the colours in the first para quite quickly but couldn't connect the dots, went with flowers and got nowhere
― koogs, Wednesday, 20 April 2022 21:29 (four years ago)
damn you all for alerting me to the existence of redactle
― castanuts (DJP), Wednesday, 20 April 2022 21:31 (four years ago)
I did yesterday’s Redactle with Kevin; as they drop at 5pm UK time, it’s a pleasant cocktail hour interlude. He got the answer ahead of me, and shamefully I kept vetoing it until he insisted.
― mike t-diva, Thursday, 21 April 2022 12:14 (four years ago)
yeah one of my favourite things about Redactle is that it refreshes at a different time to all the other *dles
― TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Thursday, 21 April 2022 14:27 (four years ago)
#15 has some weird formatting that makes viewing certain parts hard to read.

ugh this one's taking forever even though I basically know what it is, after getting yesterday's in 11.
― JoeStork, Thursday, 21 April 2022 22:06 (four years ago)
same! I have the first word and I know what it is also known is, but I'm just going through everything that could be plausible for the second word and so far it's none of them
― TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Thursday, 21 April 2022 22:17 (four years ago)
got it in the end - that was annoying
― TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Friday, 22 April 2022 00:44 (four years ago)
got the redactle in 120. I feel like I should have gotten in about half as many. I knew broadly in what category of thing it was pretty early thanks to some lucky guesses, but somehow couldn't quite figure it out.
― silverfish, Friday, 22 April 2022 00:47 (four years ago)
I eventually got Inclined with about five minutes to go but couldn’t summon up plane. 518 guesses what a joke.
― Alba, Friday, 22 April 2022 16:31 (four years ago)
I got it in 18 after a lucky early guess of 'normal' which was clearly used in a geometrical sense. And the previous one in 44, I guessed 'sun' after I heard it in a cartoon my kids were watching, which revealed something being 'in ____ sun', clearly 'full' and therefore plant related.
― ledge, Friday, 22 April 2022 17:05 (four years ago)
today's Redactle features a reference to a landmark that's in the scheme I grew up in!
― boxedjoy, Friday, 22 April 2022 17:28 (four years ago)
yeah, lots of maths in the inclined plane one and was helped slightly by the "An" before it in the first line which narrows it down to starting with a vowel. should've got it earlier tbh. the subscript confused me for a while. and the formatting glitches in the middle.
― koogs, Friday, 22 April 2022 17:31 (four years ago)
that's odd in redactle #16, it says there are two instances of artist but only one shows up when you click on it
― koogs, Friday, 22 April 2022 17:36 (four years ago)
Today's Octordle was certainly fun
― groovypanda, Friday, 22 April 2022 18:02 (four years ago)
redactle #16 in 314, somehow took me until guess #309 to try music and got it pretty quickly after that.
― silverfish, Friday, 22 April 2022 18:03 (four years ago)
