Be prepared for more results like that in the true Labour heartlands - the cities.

I think the Liberals have always done reasonably well in Liverpool?

Phil McCracken (Tom D.), Friday, 8 April 2022 10:31 (four years ago)

Suggests that UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT is not doing a great job of attracting voters who were SCARED OFF by Labour’s Communist Turn. Also there was recently some nasty candidate meddling by Central HQ in Liverpool iirc.

but at the expense of another tory win? i've had enough of these wreckers already.

koogs, Friday, 8 April 2022 11:18 (four years ago)

Council results like this are likely down to local dissatisfaction with services/management; LAB are possibly going to get thumped in Croydon, and the LD canvassers have been excitedly scurrying around our neighbourhood for weeks.

(I note the LDs had all the seats in Warbreck before 2007... based off zero contemporary local knowledge, I'm just gonna call this the Ormskirk branch soft Tory corridor).

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 April 2022 11:28 (four years ago)

croydon has a huge corruption scandal bubbling under (which critics insist current labour party general secretary d4vid 3v4ns is somewhat adjacent to)

mark s, Friday, 8 April 2022 11:34 (four years ago)

Yeah, the partnership with 3r1ck By 3r1ck is very dodgy, and has barely produced a single affordable home. £1.5bn in debt (think half of that was inherited from the previous CON administration but still)?

Michael Jones, Friday, 8 April 2022 12:28 (four years ago)

"Council results like this are likely down to local dissatisfaction with services/management"

Usually when there is a council loss you get to know the local issue behind it quite quickly from a twitter account.

This was a hold but the seat is now a marginal, and I can't see any local scandals - which could signal a disaster for Lab next month.

fair points and lol keith obviously, it depends I suppose if you regard the lib dems as a party in their own right or just a sort of cum sock for protest votes. One important statistic that's missing is turnout and comparison with last time.

Re Rishi, reminded of Chesterton rather the Hollow Men referenced in Twitter exchange:

But Higgins is a Heathen,
And his slaves grow lean and grey,
That he may drink some tepid milk
Exactly twice a day.

and

But Higgins is a Heathen,
And he drives the dreary quill,
To lend the poor that funny cash
That makes them poorer still.

"A Met Police officer packed a bag full of items to have sex with a girl he thought was 13 years old, a court has heard.

Det Con Francois Olwage, 52, from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, allegedly spoke to the "girl" for two weeks before trying to meet, Winchester Crown Court heard.

The court heard the girl was in fact an undercover police officer."

Yup.

Student loan interest rates expected to rise from 4.5% to 12% for high earners and from 1.5% to 9% for low earners from September. An average grad with £50k debt will incur £2,200 to £3000 in interest over 6 months, just in case young wallets haven't been hit hard enough.

BREAKING: Government unveils plans to send ‘illegal migrants’ who reach Britain to Rwanda.

PM will announce the plans in a speech tomorrow. It has long been the government’s ambition to ‘offshore’ migrants. Other countries previously refused, but UK has made a deal with Rwanda.

Pure neolib brain juice

I don't know who needs to hear this, but anyone who thinks the Rwanda deal is unethical is already going to think that.

If you really want to make it unpopular, point out that it is a waste of 1.4 billion quid by a government that wont help people with their energy bills.
