I decided to try Quordle and over the course of a week I've learned like 7 new words

Feel like as it gets higher than Quordle it gets easier but maybe more tedious.

Sure, it's a word, but it's not a very good word to use as the correct answer for a word-guessing game. Although if they also removed it from the list of guessable words, that would be dumb.

I can't get to wordle using Chrome, only Safari

for me today it was the fourth letter - stole, stoke, stone, stove, store - those words with multiple one-letter substitutions are where I fail

hard mode is dumb mode in situations like this

I like it as it ups the stakes. Sometimes means it's pure luck if you guess the remaining letter in time but not using it means you basically never fail.

^this. I don' think I even have hard mode on but still usually play it that way most of the time.

I do use the well-breaker idea for the 4 and 8 word versions though.

I don't have hard mode turned on but that's just how I've always played it anyway. (I'm not a purist or anything, I just like trying to guess the actual word.)

Right. Plus I don't really like the pressure of having to always get it every day. It's generally easy enough as it is and I don't want to stress about it if I can help it.

I don't stress about it but I will still be sad when my streak ends.

That "Lingo" TV show accepted "Spunk" as a legitimate word answer attempt, last week.

That was spunky of them.

Think today was my favorite octordle yet. Quordle was fine too.

quordle and octordle are fun puzzles. sedecordle (16 words) is a bit less fun since it doesn't fit easily on my screen so i lose track of which letters are ruled out or in. i start with a 3 word well-breaker that covers 15 letters including all vowels. from there i can solve the puzzles usually with 1 or 2 spaces left. nice low stakes mental break during the day.

Constantly struck by the framed master list having such a range of interesting movies when the answers never even go slightly leftfield. Obv ideally you want a balance but today is the 3rd fucking Edgar wright film since I started playing and I’ve been playing for about 2 weeks

Heardle on the other hand seems to be putting a lot of work in expanding its data set: whereas before it looked like almost exclusively big US hits from this century, now you have much older stuff like Led Zep’s “Immigrant Song” popping up, but also things like Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” (influential, but not a big US chart hit) and even, earlier this week, Koffee’s “Toast”. Makes things a lot more interesting obviously.

this one is a semantle like challenge. Or at least today's is. I'm guessing the difficulty could vary a lot.

350 guesses! For some reason I found Redactle a lot more palatable than Semantle.

133! climate at guess 80, anthropocene at 102. And now I know what the holocene actually is. I enjoyed that - maybe more than if it had taken me 350 guesses!

what happens in redactle when you have something like "XXX, 000"? or things that are obviously years?

You can keep guessing the unit before and after commas if you want but don’t think it’s a very worthwhile use of a guess. I did wonder similar when I thought the point of the game was to fill every blank rather than just get the title.

I got today’s in 29 but once I’d got it I realised I really should have got it sooner.

never would've got that without looking it up, not a part of history i'm familiar with. i ended up getting the song title at the end and that had a connection to the article title, almost...

although it now occurs to me that alba was talking about 'yesterday's' redactle, given that it changes like mid-afternoon.

Oh yes, I was talking about The Washington Post, which I should have got sooner after spotting D.C. on my eight go, but I forgot about newspapers for some reason despite working for one

(i looked at the source, there's a gamelist.js which does it right - a base64 encoded list. i decoded them all, and none of them were the one i just did!)

I thought that I'd stumbled on something very smart by entering 0-9, but then that only works if those digits appear on their own, and long strings of numbers are counted as single words.
