Hats off to Sam.

I regret to inform you that we as a society have crossed the --ordle rubicon. https://t.co/tIxYZSbM6X— Ken Tremendous (@KenTremendous) March 30, 2022

I decided to try Quordle and over the course of a week I've learned like 7 new words
― frogbs, Thursday, 31 March 2022 03:45 (four years ago)
Feel like as it gets higher than Quordle it gets easier but maybe more tedious.
― The Central Rockaliser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 31 March 2022 03:54 (four years ago)
once you get like 12+ guesses it's just a game of word scramble
― frogbs, Thursday, 31 March 2022 03:57 (four years ago)
Yup

Sure, it's a word, but it's not a very good word to use as the correct answer for a word-guessing game. Although if they also removed it from the list of guessable words, that would be dumb.
― jaymc, Thursday, 31 March 2022 04:32 (four years ago)
I can't get to wordle using Chrome, only Safari
for me today it was the fourth letter - stole, stoke, stone, stove, store - those words with multiple one-letter substitutions are where I fail
― Dan S, Thursday, 31 March 2022 05:19 (four years ago)
see above for “well breaker” (?) advice
― celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Thursday, 31 March 2022 06:03 (four years ago)
Yes but hard mode
― groovypanda, Thursday, 31 March 2022 11:12 (four years ago)
hard mode is dumb mode in situations like this
― celebrating ten years of constant posting (breastcrawl), Thursday, 31 March 2022 11:28 (four years ago)
I like it as it ups the stakes. Sometimes means it's pure luck if you guess the remaining letter in time but not using it means you basically never fail.
― groovypanda, Thursday, 31 March 2022 15:06 (four years ago)
^this. I don' think I even have hard mode on but still usually play it that way most of the time.I do use the well-breaker idea for the 4 and 8 word versions though.
― The Central Rockaliser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 31 March 2022 15:12 (four years ago)
I don't have hard mode turned on but that's just how I've always played it anyway. (I'm not a purist or anything, I just like trying to guess the actual word.)

Right. Plus I don't really like the pressure of having to always get it every day. It's generally easy enough as it is and I don't want to stress about it if I can help it.
― The Central Rockaliser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 31 March 2022 15:21 (four years ago)
I don't stress about it but I will still be sad when my streak ends.

That "Lingo" TV show accepted "Spunk" as a legitimate word answer attempt, last week.
― Mark G, Monday, 4 April 2022 11:40 (four years ago)
That was spunky of them.

Think today was my favorite octordle yet. Quordle was fine too.
― Came Here to Roll the Microscope (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 5 April 2022 18:41 (four years ago)
quordle and octordle are fun puzzles. sedecordle (16 words) is a bit less fun since it doesn't fit easily on my screen so i lose track of which letters are ruled out or in. i start with a 3 word well-breaker that covers 15 letters including all vowels. from there i can solve the puzzles usually with 1 or 2 spaces left. nice low stakes mental break during the day.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/upshot/wordle-bot.htmlThis is a fun addition but not sure how much to trust its skill metric!

fun quordle today
― that's not my post, Monday, 11 April 2022 18:24 (four years ago)
yeah it had one which 1) I didn't know was an actual word and 2) never would have gotten even if I did

Constantly struck by the framed master list having such a range of interesting movies when the answers never even go slightly leftfield. Obv ideally you want a balance but today is the 3rd fucking Edgar wright film since I started playing and I’ve been playing for about 2 weeks
― gop on ya gingrich (wins), Wednesday, 13 April 2022 11:40 (four years ago)
Heardle on the other hand seems to be putting a lot of work in expanding its data set: whereas before it looked like almost exclusively big US hits from this century, now you have much older stuff like Led Zep’s “Immigrant Song” popping up, but also things like Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” (influential, but not a big US chart hit) and even, earlier this week, Koffee’s “Toast”. Makes things a lot more interesting obviously.

https://www.redactle.com/this one is a semantle like challenge. Or at least today's is. I'm guessing the difficulty could vary a lot.
― silverfish, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:24 (four years ago)
350 guesses! For some reason I found Redactle a lot more palatable than Semantle.
― Pomelo Anthony (Leee), Saturday, 16 April 2022 02:21 (four years ago)
nice idea, but the interface is off-putting
― middot • is • my • middle • name (breastcrawl), Saturday, 16 April 2022 08:18 (four years ago)
133! climate at guess 80, anthropocene at 102. And now I know what the holocene actually is. I enjoyed that - maybe more than if it had taken me 350 guesses!
― ledge, Saturday, 16 April 2022 08:50 (four years ago)
I solved today's Redactle (#10) in 187 guesses with an accuracy of 43.85%. Played at https://www.redactle.com/
― Pomelo Anthony (Leee), Saturday, 16 April 2022 17:58 (four years ago)
what happens in redactle when you have something like "XXX, 000"? or things that are obviously years?
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 19:02 (four years ago)
You can keep guessing the unit before and after commas if you want but don’t think it’s a very worthwhile use of a guess. I did wonder similar when I thought the point of the game was to fill every blank rather than just get the title.
― Alba, Monday, 18 April 2022 19:07 (four years ago)
I got today’s in 29 but once I’d got it I realised I really should have got it sooner.
― Alba, Monday, 18 April 2022 19:08 (four years ago)
> just get the title.
what the what?
never would've got that without looking it up, not a part of history i'm familiar with. i ended up getting the song title at the end and that had a connection to the article title, almost...
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:37 (four years ago)
although it now occurs to me that alba was talking about 'yesterday's' redactle, given that it changes like mid-afternoon.
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:40 (four years ago)
16:00 UTC it changes, which is 5pm in bst.
the one i did was #12 incan emperor
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:43 (four years ago)
Oh yes, I was talking about The Washington Post, which I should have got sooner after spotting D.C. on my eight go, but I forgot about newspapers for some reason despite working for one
― Alba, Monday, 18 April 2022 20:45 (four years ago)
(i looked at the source, there's a gamelist.js which does it right - a base64 encoded list. i decoded them all, and none of them were the one i just did!)
― koogs, Monday, 18 April 2022 21:01 (four years ago)
I thought that I'd stumbled on something very smart by entering 0-9, but then that only works if those digits appear on their own, and long strings of numbers are counted as single words.
― Pomelo Anthony (Leee), Monday, 18 April 2022 21:08 (four years ago)
Redactle #12 in 5 tries, most likely I will never again achieve such a thing in my life
