HBO's Succession - Season 2 and Beyond

Took a break for a couple of weeks, finished S3 last night. About equal to S2, I think. I watch, I'm engaged, I like it, don't love it. Maybe I'm one of those rubes who needs someone to root for--if anything, I sometimes find myself rooting for Logan, who's at least authentic (and I like the ways--his smile, the tilt of his head--he keeps everything close to his vest). But I know he's awful, so "rooting" isn't exactly the right word. Found Kendall's breakdown in the finale moving (and wanted to throttle joke-machine Roman, but that's who he is too, anything else would be false). I actually missed the key point about Tom near the end of the finale until I read up afterwards. (One of my favourite things is when Tom and Shiv, working in tandem, clown around at someone's expense, usually Greg's. Tom, who's such a simp and a cipher at times, has a really funny, cutting sense of humour in those situations.)

I loved Roman in that scene - using his sociopathic wit to console Kendall and help someone else, for once.

Definitely quotable: "I guess I'm just trying to say, like, who's the real victim here? I waited three quarters of an hour for a gin and tonic." Even Kendall started to laugh...Also loved Tom's line about Greg potentially being Europe's weirdest monarch.

Yeah you can really see how Roman has become trapped by his armor of misanthropy, this is what being emotionally supportive looks like because he literally cant do those other supportive things people do, like console, hug, hold eye contact etc.

I’m about halfway through s2 of this and I honestly love it??? I’m on the episode where they have protests about their Nazi news anchor and it’s so good. “I’m intellectually promiscuous but culturally conservative”. I love most of these awful people, but I have to be honest and say I love love love when anything bad happens to Tom. What a cunt.

I've been watching Inventing Anna (against my better judgement) and Stewie and Tabitha from Succession are playing a married couple in it, it was confusing to me, if it is to be said.

Watching s2 for the second time (not seen s3). Didn't catch Shiv referring to Connor as "the first pancake" before (in the Dundee episode, I think.) Oof, lol.

i tried to be nerdy & cool this time & watch objectively and admire the construction & figure out how early they were driving various story elements but it’s so easy to get sucked into the scene drama / dialogue i’m just going to be uncool & laugh along like a poor

Rewatched the Kendall's 40th Birthday episode a bit ago, and it really is so perfectly made.

I really want to push Nate out of the airlock, what a heinously limp character

anyone seen THE MENU? thought it kinda sucked. while watching it I was thinking it’d make more sense as a three-episode prestige limited series on HBO or netflix or something, so it made a lot of sense when I learned that the director is the succession guy

Peter Friedman, who plays Frank, is excellent in She Said as Lanny Davis.

i have not watched the menu but many people are saying it sucked

I loved it overall, good fun.

the menu feels v divisive...wonder if ill love it...

basically it’s good if you go into it with the expectation that it’ll be a fun comedy-horror with good performances. if you’re expecting a smart satire you’re going to be disappointed.

i feel like they had 5 in them but if this season kicks ass front to back then good for them

I swear most of HBO shows are all about a bunch of rich aholes. World is already ruled by these creeps and I just can’t put to watch shows about that class of people.

But that's what makes the show so great and so compelling. It shows these people as greedy, flawed and yet still human and sometimes even likeable.

I'm not going to try to convince earlnash, I know exactly how he feels and it's why I put off watching this for so long. I know other people who feel the same way. In my case I'm not sure why I decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did because it is extraordinary but it is also extremely grim and cringe and incredibly entitled people act terrible towards each other and it's perfectly defensible to decide you don't want to spend your evening in vibes like that

its just so good and the ruling class is certainly worth examining especially if youre mean to them, and fwiw succession is really about the ruling part it gets into the politics and mechanisms of the situation where something like white lotus is just about rich people on vacation but theyre not necessarily the ones trying to influence elections and so forth
