any time I get irritated or depressed by the fact people listen to this guy, I watch it and feel better

I really wonder, was he always this dumb? His academic book looks baffling but it’s really hard to imagine that the guy on Twitter now could function as a successful university professor/lecturer.

He seems like the kind of professor who could easily develop a local cult of personality. I can't help wondering if the legacy at U of T of people like Marshall McLuhan and Northrop Frye has something to do with it - I can imagine him striking as a 'big thinker' in that tradition.

from what i experienced "tentpole" professors are like half of every department, university faculty success is mostly about image, politics and chutzpah, and the thoughtful or careful or profound scholars or dedicated teachers are in the minority and routinely shit on.

If Chuck really thinks his rational cleaver is going to act as a “frightening mirror” to any of these deluded dolts, I’d suggest he pay Reddit a visit, try engaging with a gaggle of the nitwits, and he can experience the thrill of determining whether they could actually be dim enough to buy into the obvious BS they’re peddling. The reality distortion field of those filter bubbles can’t be overcome with mere rationality.
