and I get like, old friends on FB, dudes I've known since grade school, NICE FUCKIN GUYS with about 2/3 of their politics still in an ok place, nominal progressives and they see one video from this asshole and it's like the hypno-ray grabbed them while their guard was down, "oh you gotta really LISTEN TO WHAT HE HAS TO SAY," no my dude, if it can't survive being restated more succinctly then guess what, it's fucking snake oil, God it's aggravating

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 14 March 2022 21:44 (four years ago)

Doesn’t this guy stan Nietzsche but he thinks Derrida is an unacceptable threat to Western ideology?

treeship., Monday, 14 March 2022 22:00 (four years ago)

Just so sick of awful people being held up as leaders and their awful thoughts percolating through society as if they're worth anyone's time, it's fucking exhausting.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 14 March 2022 22:01 (four years ago)

Has he read a word of any of them except kendi and diangelo?

treeship., Monday, 14 March 2022 22:03 (four years ago)

Nietzsche stanz will jump through every hoop they can find to stan their man, it is a disease

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 14 March 2022 22:09 (four years ago)

I really wonder, was he always this dumb? His academic book looks baffling but it’s really hard to imagine that the guy on Twitter now could function as a successful university professor/lecturer.

JoeStork, Monday, 14 March 2022 22:18 (four years ago)

Feel like there’s a decent chance he got Naomi Klein mixed up with Naomi Wolf.

exactly this, but we might still be giving him too much credit!

mh, Monday, 14 March 2022 22:36 (four years ago)

He may have gotten dumber but his main problem so far as I can tell is not staying in his lane

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 14 March 2022 22:37 (four years ago)

His academic book is the worst kind of Jungian fuckwittedness.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Monday, 14 March 2022 23:59 (four years ago)

"postmodern neomarxism" is his version of "cultural marxism" i.e. jews

adam t. (abanana), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 00:10 (four years ago)

counterpoint: he's smart actually because he knows academia is already a grift and he's leaned into it.

Allegedly he badgered the University of Toronto into giving him tenure.

ding ding ding

budo jeru, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 00:29 (four years ago)

lol you don't "badger" a university into giving you tenure you do it by selling a fuckton of books and being a celeb. though they'll never admit it.

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 00:31 (four years ago)

I had figured he’d gotten tenure before he blew up on YouTube.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 00:36 (four years ago)

attacking this guy on his ideas or his dumbness / smartness is .. idk, similar energy to having an elizabeth warren bumper sticker.

also would question joan crawford's assertion that the politics of his friends who are blinkered by jordan peterson are 2/3 ok, that they're nominal progressives, or that they're nice.

I know one person who is the single overlapping point in the center of a Venn diagram of active BLM support/pro-vax/otherwise decent if unremarkable beliefs and daily Joe Rogan viewer/'Jordan Peterson has some good thoughts tbh'

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 00:45 (four years ago)

His academic book is the worst kind of Jungian fuckwittedness.

I had a professor in grad school who would automatically fail anyone who cited Jung or Joseph Campbell in a paper.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 00:49 (four years ago)

I came in too late and his list is deleted. What am I going to read now?

hrep (H.P), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 01:06 (four years ago)

lol why did he delete that list? Deleting it is even dumber than posting it in the first place.

Campbell was also an antisemite.

Otto Insurance (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 02:58 (four years ago)

This professor was a Semite, but I don't think that's why he objected to Campbell.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 04:17 (four years ago)

He reposted it, I think he just edited it to remove Michel Foucault…and above all Michel Foucault.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 06:14 (four years ago)

Well, Foucault is now being taken up by the right as a hero and spurned as a reactionary by the left.

how postmodern and neo-marxist of him

symsymsym, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 14:25 (four years ago)

can’t even stand by his convictions in a shit tweet

mh, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 14:27 (four years ago)

He didn't remove Foucault entirely, just fixed the double mention.

o. nate, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 14:42 (four years ago)

few current public figures make my skin crawl more than this guy

OG Bob Sacamano (will), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 14:45 (four years ago)

I’m trying to find the video clip of someone asking him if he’s still on the all-meat diet and he looks glum and mumbles “unfortunately..”

any time I get irritated or depressed by the fact people listen to this guy, I watch it and feel better

mh, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 14:47 (four years ago)

I really wonder, was he always this dumb? His academic book looks baffling but it’s really hard to imagine that the guy on Twitter now could function as a successful university professor/lecturer.

He seems like the kind of professor who could easily develop a local cult of personality. I can't help wondering if the legacy at U of T of people like Marshall McLuhan and Northrop Frye has something to do with it - I can imagine him striking as a 'big thinker' in that tradition.

jmm, Tuesday, 15 March 2022 15:07 (four years ago)

that's basically what i meant above, even though the timing of his tenure comes before the youtube blowup and book sales.

from what i experienced "tentpole" professors are like half of every department, university faculty success is mostly about image, politics and chutzpah, and the thoughtful or careful or profound scholars or dedicated teachers are in the minority and routinely shit on.

the cat needs to start paying for its own cbd (map), Tuesday, 15 March 2022 15:30 (four years ago)

frankly I think it’s pretty fucking elitist to dunk on jordan peterson? honestly I’m inspired by how he overcame his functional illiteracy to do whatever it is he’s doing these days 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 go off king
