my posts here were in response to posts on the Admin Log 2, so I don't believe they belong on NV's thread. it's true that the post I responded to could use that link. perhaps your post is indeed a reference for those still posting in that thread? if we get 15 more options we can make a magic mod-ball.

many other posters seemed capable of moving the discussion to NV's thread. it in fact successfully moved there, and there were multiple responses to posts that were on the other thread. A few people who were new to the clusterfuck, posted to the Admin Log 2 thread, and they were very mature and understanding, when me and emil.y both explained the situation. I'm not sure why you feel you can't join the conversation on the ILE thread?

I don't know you well at all, SG, so I don't want to be an asshole (WGW and I go way back and we can joke about certain things and feel comfortable about boundaries) and let you back into that thread, only to find that you are making posts that are stirring the pot, and I am forced to be punitive, because I set boundaries and you tested/crossed them.

this is a less exciting light signaling technological glitch, but it seems like the sensor-driven traffic light programming at the intersection near my house reverts to an older program sometimes.

for the first 10 years i lived there, at one point there were two left turn lanes (to get on the road that takes you to the freeway) and one lane going straight.

this was when my street was an unremarkable residential street and there wasn't a large bougie supermarket on the corner.

the traffic signals at that point had sensors such that the left turn signal would activate if your vehicle was in the two left lanes.

when the bougie supermarket went in, only the leftmost of the three lanes remained a left turn lane, and the middle lane went from being a left turn lane into a lane that goes straight. now, if you are in far left lane, you will get a left turn signal; if you are in the middle and right lane, you will get a green to go straight. This is as it should be.

However, at various points in time the signaling system must encounter an error and revert to its earlier programming, where if you are in the middle lane -- now a lane that goes straight -- and there aren't any cars in the right lane -- which has always been a lane that goes straight -- you will get a left turn signal, but not a green to go straight. in other words, you will sit at that intersection waiting for the light to turn green such that you can go straight and the light will not turn green (because it thinks you are in a left turn only lane) -- until a car pulls up in the right lane.

depending on the time of day, you could be waiting numerous cycles for a car to pull up in the right lane and be released from the Beckett-esque traffic signal. sometimes cars will just run the light because they feel like it should have been their turn already. I have found that the way to get a green light when the old traffic signal program kicks in is to put your car in reverse, back up for a few seconds, then pull into the right lane, and then the light will turn green the next cycle.

Through the '80s, the earnestness/seriousness became their schtick, and came across as slickly (and arguably cynically) choreographed as anything by "pop" artists that some U2 fans dismissed as lightweight (There's probably a parallel between '60s Doors fans and '80s U2 fans, eschewing the Monkees/Madonna in favor of the Deep Meaningful Music of the Doors/U2). Even fans found Rattle & Hum (the movie mostly, but parts of the record) insufferable, so no matter how cringey the humor on the ZooTV tour was, it was a welcome relief from "we're stealin' it back!"
