Rolling Obituary Thread 2022

His two most recent albums were great, made with an incredible band: Bill Frisell on guitar, Jason Moran on piano, Thomas Morgan on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. He had two records before that with just Frisell and Blade that I need to check out.

He is a welcome presence in the Ginger Baker documentary.

In fact this album he made with Ginger Baker called Coward of the County seems like it might be good.

The last time I watched Death Line I had forgotten he was in it and excitedly shouted RON PEMBER! at the screen when he came on.

oh no, those guys felt like family to me. It's wonderful that Sesame Street got so much, so right, right off the bat.

Oh no, what another sad loss -- Bobbie Nelson, Willie's sister and longtime (as in decades and decades) pianist/keyboardist.

Bobbie Nelson was one of the first women musicians that I ever saw on stage. She was the first example I had of a woman playing music while also having a family. I’m honored to have known her. My deepest sympathies to the Nelson family.

On a different note, UK music journalist Gavin Martin has passed due to a sudden heart attack on holiday. We knew each other very casually through Facebook but he always seemed a very good sort and his many friends are taking it quite hard.

(xpost) "Why Can't We Live Together" has never been a personal favourite (heard it off the car radio a few days ago), but at the same time, I recognize it as one of the stranger and most striking hits of its day.

Love it.

RIP Timmy. The groovy and sprightly “You're the Song (I've Always Wanted to Sing)” (the title track of his follow-up album) left an indelible impression on me just when I started exploring soul music away from the (Dutch) charts.

Jeez, wasn’t ready for that

I was looking at his filmography after hearing the news. It’s shocking how few of these I’ve seen or remember. For whatever reason the ones I’ve seen are ones where he had small roles.

I haven't seen that many of his movies, I don't think, but he's fantastic in Altered States and Body Heat and A History of Violence. He was a great character actor that Hollywood tried to turn into a lead because he was good-looking. When he could get that out of the way (like in the Amazon show Goliath, where he was heavily scarred), he could be really fucking good.

A good actor and a huge piece of shit who abused Marlee Matlin

I've always had a tough time figuring out that guy's acting. Sometimes he could be funny, or empathetic, or menacing, other times he was weirdly somnambulant, like he'd been hypnotized.

oh man, didn't know about the history of abuse. Not just Matlin but another ex. Terrible. Altered States was a favorite of mine in high school.

A pretty good sleeper William Hurt film is Eyewitness (1981), co-starring Sigourney Weaver

He was so briefly huge: the big white prestige actor of the High Reagan Era. Best playing recessive dudes; he didn't mind playing dim or even stupid characters without condescending to them, a difficult trick.

Lovd him in Broadcast News, making a character like that be likeable is quite a magic trick

but yeah, awful dude irl, the marlee matlin stories are really upsetting

A lot of the time, some of his most acclaimed performances, I found him off-putting. Loved him in Broadcast News and Smoke. Still remember when he was the big new thing, so this is a little sobering in terms of feeling old myself.
