now that social media is filled with memes telling people that are worried about rising gas costs to be thankful they don't live in a war zone, I wonder if they actually have any low-income friends or family whom a massive gasoline hike actually could threaten their ability to make ends meet. or ever had a colleague call out of work because they had no money to fill up their vehicle to get to work that day. or have ever had the ability to hold two different thoughts in their head at the same time.

but hey, if it makes people feel better to ration out sympathy based on a tiered system.

(I'm definitely not talking about myself here, and obviously there's a wide gulf between David Allen Coe fans who drive SUVs with MAGA bumper stickers and make six figures whinging about gas prices and people who are actually struggling, but lefties' penchant for zero sum messaging never ceases to amaze)

I made it about halfway through Atomic Habits earlier this year (at my therapist's suggestion) and it inspired me to make some small-but-important life changes that I have thus far been able to stick to.

There are obviously some egregious Jordan Peterson books in there and I'm unfamiliar with most of the rest.

If anyone is still reading any of those books 5 years from now I will be astonished. But there will be a whole new batch of warmed-over pop psychology and simple-minded self-motivational books by then, so no one will miss these.

Seneca is likely to make it another 5 years.

increasingly people are using Facebook stories. i get 5 seconds to read three sentences done as an image? what am i missing?

(videos are even worse because they don't auto-play and by the time I've clicked the button the 5 seconds is over)

FB stories are dumb and I only ever used them when I was banned because the system screwed up and still let me do them

You can pause a story on an iPhone/iPad by touching it and holding it. It took me years to realise this.

i hit reply, but it puts a transparent overlay on it, greying it out slightly, and brings up the keyboard obscuring the bottom half.

yeah, just clicking it does nothing, it has to be the reply box or the emojis next to it.

we sat on the porch with a massive bowl of penny candy and invited anyone who stopped in to pick out two choices.

two obviously twentysomething kids smoking weed stopped when they saw us on our stoop and one of them tossed on a covid mask and wandered up with "trick or treat, i just turned 15." he took a kitkat with our blessing.

separately, a lady in her fifties/sixties wearing a hijab strolled right up and lunged at our bowl before we could react, grabbing two massive handfuls, dumping them in her bag and then tried to do it again. we actually had to restrain her. she laughed and said something heavily accented about "3 at home" and held her arm out expecting more. i dubiously gave her an additional assortment of starbursts to make her go away. She looked to be carrying something like 15 pounds of candy in multiple sacks already. she tried the same thing next door but didn't make it past their front gate. Possibly a known local character that I haven't met yet?

Everyone else who arrived was 12 or under or parents and exceptionally polite. One dad had a killer homemade Red Guardian costume. Lots of anime characters. One dad shredder and his two kids as ninja turtles. One family dressed as the local broadcast crew for the Mets, kid wearing a mustache and a bald cap tells me "my dad will have to explain."
