Very little chat on here about the Trojan Horse podcast - been bingeing it and despite the usual annoying NPR house style in terms of reporting it's pretty great, and anger inducing.

Work will needed to be ended at this rate.

We will likely hear a lot more noise about ending legally required isolation and testing, but it really is a fucking disgrace that we've come through two years of a pandemic with nothing to show for it when it comes to sick pay and workers rights. https://t.co/LDbV9Q40C9

It's all going one way.

it's all working out pretty much as you'd expect it to - far from redressing pre-pandemic inequalities in any way, the net effect in the longer term is to make them even worse https://t.co/4NT8N7OjyD pic.twitter.com/ROPObpiBsa

This is a time for weirdos.

There is one person above all I do not want to hear from over Ukraine: Ed Miliband.
His decision to vote against military action in Syria remains the most shameful single act of any major British politician of my lifetime, with consequences far beyond anything he considered

the oversize level of hatred that Labour right/neoconservative types have for Ed Miliband is amazing, like the Jimmy Carter "he's history's greatest monster" bit from the Simpsons but for real.

if she'd said she wasn't voting labour because Miliband's team of advisers are a bunch of abhorrent idiots from right-wing think tanks and no better than tories then fair enough though

Going after Russian Dark money could cause house prices in Central London to crash overnight.

Rents could plummet, jeopardising the livelihoods of tens of thousands of landlords.

Hold Mr Putin to account, robustly, by all means. But do so sensibly. Pragmatically. Declare war.

The Telegraph headline is slightly misleading. There is going to be a consultation with a couple of options, one of which would be restricting loans for people who don’t get a C at Maths and English GCSE and one is restricting them for people who don’t get two E grades at A-Level, or equivalent (BTEC, NVQ, etc), unless they’re adults returning to education, which I think is more likely to be implemented.

It’s a bad policy either way but the government has essentially taken the line that they don’t want universities to plug the COVID / bad investment hole in their finances by removing admission standards. They can either formally cap the number of students universities can take - which they did for a while in 2020 but they don’t want to maintain, or go no-cap but have a minimum threshold for results.

More insanity from Davis, but I don't see any significant voices calling for it.

Just adding my voice that this is a catastrophically terrible idea that must be opposed as strongly as possible - escalating this war into a major, direct military confrontation between nuclear-armed powers is gambling at unknown odds with the future of the world. https://t.co/8xwcdHraKc

xp

When offered the post of Shadow Secretary for Defence, Chris Bryant is said to have demanded "a 30-minute conversation about what would happen if we had to invade Russia" - not the usual sort of response you'd expect from a fellow MP, but then Jeremy Corbyn is quite an unusual leader.

there have been alleged developments involving Labour that are staggering in their cynicism and evil tbh, if there was any lingering doubt about whether i should have stayed and fought as a member it's gone now

imago, Thursday, 24 February 2022 17:51 (two years ago) link

I understand that all 11 Labour MPs who signed the Stop The War statement (which criticised Nato) have been written to by the Shadow Chief Whip and asked to withdraw their signatures.
Sounds like if they refuse to do so, they will all lose the whip.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 24 February 2022 18:07 (two years ago) link

ok having actually now READ the Stop The War statement, it does come across as hopelessly naive in its defence of Russia's 'security concerns'. still don't think this is a matter for withdrawing the whip - that bit is opportunistic - but a follow-up statement denouncing Putin would probably be a very good idea

imago, Thursday, 24 February 2022 18:37 (two years ago) link

Sadly they listened to you.

Labour MPs withdrawing their signatures to Stop The War letter. If you disagree with it - I have had many respectful discussions who those who do - fair enough. But to sign it, then remove your name because the you were whipped, lacks any principle whatsoever on the issue.
