Nabs, what world do you live in where being really, really famous for being insane and locked away by a madman is better for an actual actress than, like, getting movie roles?

The world where Katie Holmes's face sells eight different magazines at the newsstand, something it was totally not accomplishing via her acting! I mean, two things to keep in mind here: (a) no matter how insane they are, there are still plenty of people in this country who are totally fascinated by them as the ultimate A-list couple, plus (b) you're talking about success as an actress, and I'm talking about public profile as a celebrity. The sole point here is that Katie Holmes is currently way more important now, public-consciousness-wise, than she was before she hooked up with Cruise.

(Also Pitt and Jolie gravitated towards each other because they were in the same sphere of celebrity, not because one was more famous than the other or one helped rehabilitate the other or anything like that; even when Jolie was "CRAZEE", she was the type of crazy that people thought was awesome as opposed to, say, Anna Nicole Smith's brand of pathetic-crazy.)

And Ally, you could trot out the "sexist" line if I was claiming either of them were somehow coattailing men to fame, but that's not what I'm saying -- all I'm saying is that tabloid-romance coverage can do really big things for people's public profiles, and as much for either party. A tabloid romance is like an entire other movie for you to star in! And I'd estimate nearly as much money has been spent following these two couplings via magazine as has been spent seeing any of its members big films!

Uh, so then stop claiming that fixin' themselves up with some fine young menfolk lifted two already A-list, known-name stars into, uh, A-list, known-name stars? If your argument was "Romance sells tabloids!" then it's a pretty dumb, obvious argument that doesn't warrant a paragraph or two about how hooking up with some men (neither of which had great ie very well liked public profiles prior) actually helped elevate either woman.

The way Jolie is branded by the media (ex as some kind of elegant princess) isn't her fault though, unless it's her fault for having excellent posture and looking at ease on the red carpet AND on tops of buses. She has incredibly good bearing = a huge part of elegance, whether your reputation is founded on it or not.

xpost, horseshoe OTM about Holmes, this is what I mean--it doesn't translate into any kind of work for Holmes, and will not until she leaves Cruise, no one will touch her. So, she is somewhat more famous now but in what way is this helping her at all? Who cares?

As to the rest of this thread, it's as freaking bizarre as that painting up there that got me reading it.

People talking about whether Jolie seems "genuine" or not - based on what? Honestly! Outside the ILX Celebrity stalking thread, not one of you has even met her. So every single conclusion every one of us has made about her is based on her public image. Where does that come from? Photographs. Articles. Film clips. Etc.

I doubt she has actually changed anything except her publicist. And she and Pitt must have a damned good one to pull off this transformation.

I dislike her public personna - both of them, the early KERAZEEE goth Jolie, and the new Homebreaker Turned Mother Theresa Jolie - but that's just me.

haha, you want to come to the UK where hooking up with a rich and famous man is a career aspiration. There's a whole culture of women-who-go-out-with-Premiership-footballers, where (1) that's all they do and (2) people like and admire them and want to be them.

The difference being that these girls were pretty z-list to start with, if that, and they have used subsequent press coverage to their advantage. Possible exception = Victoria Beckham, whose post-Spice fame is surely built around who she is married to rather than anything she's actually done, but she was arguably more famous than him to start with.

I DIDN'T SAY IT WAS ABOUT GAIN, Y'ALL ILLITERATE FREAKS -- haha okay well maybe parenthetically, but this coversation was about Big Changes in Public Perception (not income), which was what I was talking about re: Jolie. (I said "and acting career" parenthetically cuz I think entrenching yourself in the public consciousness via tabloid can help seal the deal a little as far as what echelon of star you're gonna be perceived as from then on. And Angelina's big tabloid-royalty exposure moment sealed in her celebrity kinda at the top of its game!)

Actually wait I give up on this cause I'm not sure everyone can read? We were talking about public perception of people like Jolie (in horrible paintings of SUPERMARKETS), not acting careers. I opined parenthetically that Holmes now has this huge public awareness and weird perception, whereas if she hadn't married Cruise I'm not sure her acting career would have provided anything similar. Y'all agree with that, and yet for some reason have an issue? (Sex-wise we could just as easily point out that Cruise's public image would be way different and smaller without Holmes, though no-Holmes might have meant no-Freakout and saved him some trouble.)
