Why the hell didn't you say hi, Derrick?

Roxy, give me the deets and I'll make it happen.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 September 2006 04:14 (seventeen years ago) link

i should have! it was a last minute thing; i was informed of the trip two days in advance. i went down with five people, one one of whom i knew well at all, and hung out in portland with six other people i'd never met before, only two of whom actually live in portland. i was kinda just along for the ride, but there's nothing like an impromptu road trip to make fast friends out of complete strangers!

portland has good IPAs.

what neighbourhood are you in, chris?

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 21 September 2006 04:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Define "affordable".
Less than Seven hunj for a 1 bed/studio

SE Portland is still my favorite part of town. My GF and I manage an apartment complex by the Trader Joe's near 39th & Holgate. The owner has been raising the rent this year, but the one bedrooms are still going for under $550 and the two bedrooms for $700.

darin (darin), Thursday, 21 September 2006 04:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Well hunj

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 September 2006 04:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Hunh, I have a friend who lives near that intersection (but then, there are a lot of apartment complexes there). It's not really my favorite part of town, right there, but the TJs is nice.

I'm in close-in NE, not far from Sandy and 20th. I actually really like this neighborhood a lot. It's a nice mix of industrial and residential and is a quick walk or bike from my favorite parts of town.

Uh, I'm in a two bedroom for under $700. I don't think you should have any problems with that budget.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait, what am I talking about? It's a one-bedroom.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Also I'm glad to be back home.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:01 (seventeen years ago) link

The return of the almost-native.

i love this city, but the cold rain today is a sad reminder of fall.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, Casuistry is right - check out NE PDX too while you are at it. Lots of really cool neighborhoods in that area that are still very affordable.

darin (darin), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:10 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, I plan though I'm leaning towards the SE since the only people I do know in PDX just moved there

T. Weiss (Timmy), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:17 (seventeen years ago) link

plan too

Go for it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:25 (seventeen years ago) link

if you need any more NE info, hit me up, too

i might have gone right past your place! we went east on burnside from MLK, past sandy. we saw the sandy hut, apparently better known as the 'randy slut', where burnside and sandy meet. what's the n/s cross street at that intersection?

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 21 September 2006 06:58 (seventeen years ago) link

That's like 15th. You probably didn't go past my place but you were an easy walk away. (I'm not actually on Sandy, thankfully.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 September 2006 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i understand the neighbourhood. very similar to commercial near hastings and east strathcona. nice.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 29 September 2006 03:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah! I wish this were somewhere nearer to me. My friend is going to be working (speaking? vending?) at this. If you see a lovely goth chick named Jemiah, tell her that Masonic Kate says hello!

Just finished the festival weekend. Several hundred weirdos and geeks and goths and a handful of really attractive genre fans streamed thru the theater. I did not get enough wine.

I am now at work, trying to get some rest. Whee.

two weeks pass...
going to be in portland next weekend to see bonnie prince billy. i know i gotta check out ozone and everyday music.

now i just need to know where to eat? breakfast and dinner suggestions welcome. bakery ideas would be appreciated to.

[really wish i had tix for the katatonia/agalloch/moonspell show instead, but my betrothed is not to fond of metal]

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Friday, 27 October 2006 02:20 (seventeen years ago) link

For a second I thought you were donut bitch because of your "e-mail", and I got very confused.

Anyway, where are you staying? There's no shortage of great breakfast and dinner places in Portland. But search Valentine's, the Farm, Nicholas, maybe J&M for breakfast or Bijou. Stop at Voodoo Doughnuts. Pearl Bakery, perhaps also Grand Central. And, you know, Powell's.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

i was also scratching my head -- bonnie prince billy? betrothed? lack of knowledge about pdx? that doesn't sound very donut-ish.

gonna be there for thanksgiving. can't wait.

breakfaast-wise, i like fat albert's.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

sorry for the confusion.....gonna have to fix that. consider it a 'hommage' to donut for now :)

we are staying at the doubletree on NE Multnomah. really wanted to stay at mcmenamins kennedy school hotel, but it was booked way in advance.

thanks for the info.

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

also good dinner places: Dots ($) and Lovely Hula Hands ($$$)

and for dessert: Pix Patisserie

ianinportland (ianinportland), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, for dinner try Wildwood ($$$ - Northwest cuisine), Il Piatto ($$ - Italian), Nuestra Cocina ($$ - Mexican)

If you're swinging by music shops, you might want to stop by Jackpot (2 locations - downtown and Hawthorne)

darin (darin), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I might be in Portland during Thankgiving weekend as well. (I'll be in seattle for the holiday itself though.)

Some more dinner suggestions: Swagats ($ - Indian), Flying Pie ($ - Pizza), Typhoon ($$ - Thai), Saburo's ($$ - Sushi)

darin (darin), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

omg, the Cuban place called Pambiche -- I ate everything.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

is the cup and saucer (on hawthorne) still around? that place helped me through so many hangovers.

the orchid and the wasp (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 October 2006 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

there's always Montage for the excellent mac & cheese.

also, there's a zombiewalk in portland tomorrow.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 27 October 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Buncha great suggestions. May I add, Lagniappe (probably my favorite restaurant right now) and Autentica. Both are on Fremont. Hang a left on 16th just after Lloyd Center and it's a straight shot up 15th to Fremont and hang a right.

SE Division is starting to blow up (finally!). Petit Provence does breakfast and is also a bakery. There is also the aforementioned Nuestra Cocina and Lauro for dinner (entrees run $12-$23).

Maybe some others can pipe in to disagree or agree but it seems like PDX'ers are crazy about going out to breakfast on the weekends. Expect a wait if you head out too late.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Friday, 27 October 2006 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

D'oh! The restaurants are off Alberta, not Fremont. I knew something was off about that.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

right by my house.

except all the new places overcharge, w/ the exception of The Nest.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

what's the one thai place in the house? that place is the best place in pdx.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:59 (seventeen years ago) link

which one? this place is lousy with thai places, in houses or not.

at any rate, Say Hi To Your Mom is playing tonight at the Towne Lounge, so time to head to that.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 27 October 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I kinda disagree about many of Darin's suggestions (Wildwood? Il Piatto? Swagats?!) but how the hell did I forget Pambiche?

Cup and Saucer is still hanging on.

Ethiopian places on Broadway are generally good (I tend to go to Blue Nile the most, because it's closest to me) and Costello's is my local coffee/sammich haunt.

PDX is still a huge breakfast town, and the restaurants still close too damn early.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 28 October 2006 05:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I kinda disagree about Casuistry's disagreement with my suggestions. What's to not like about Wildwood?!

I still need to try Pambiche.

darin (darin), Saturday, 28 October 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Stumptown Comics Fest is going on today at the convention center, along with 50 million other things

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 28 October 2006 19:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, wait, my bad! I was thinking of Wild Abandon -- I've never been to Wildwood.

I think Il Piatto is overpriced and bland (which is a shame since I live within spitting distance and I liked it ambience well enough) and Swagat has caused way too many GI issues in friends and smelled far too strongly of ammonia the last time I went.

Ken's Artisan Pizza is new and pretty great.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 28 October 2006 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Wildwood is quite good but pricey. and if you want tasty ethiopian, hit up queen of sheba on MLK. Zero ambiance but oh so good food...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Monday, 30 October 2006 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I've just had enough bad service at Queen of Sheba that I'd recommend Blue Nile, Abol, the other Broadway place (Mudai?) or, for the adventurous and thrifty, Dalos over it. But the food at QoS is certainly good enough.
