ok that is amazing

There's a decent boba fett history thing on disney+ that touches on this

Bixby in a Samsung I know it's Siri-esque (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 11 February 2022 04:47 (four years ago)

my only complaint really is that it shouldn't have been that easy or quick for Grogu to return to Mando, which cheapens the end of season 2 after all that hard work of trying to get him to Luke in the first place. Having him come back as a full-fledged Jedi who doesn't need to take a nap every five mins would also have been more interesting.

Bixby in a Samsung I know it's Siri-esque (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 11 February 2022 07:49 (four years ago)

yeah, I agree. while I love Grogu as much as everyone else i was honestly hoping for at least one Grogu-free season of Mando

“ Temura Morrison is also a terrible actor”

Someone finally said it. Yes, he’s likeable enough, but damn, the voice actor in clone wars and bad batch provided infinitely more feeling to (what is sort of) the same character. - more range could have transformed this series. The fact that he’s paired with an equally lethargic version of Fennec sure doesn’t help either.

Kim, Friday, 11 February 2022 14:42 (four years ago)

seems such a weird momentum-killing decision based on assumptions about Boba Fett that I find mystifying

In retrospect, having watched this series, I agree with this statement. I think most of the problems with the show stem from the weakness of the original concept. Boba Fett doesn't ever become a very interesting character, and I don't think it's primarily the fault of Morrison. He's just not given much to work with. His backstory seems to be a pile of well-worn tropes from action movies and TV westerns that never cohere into a believable personality. It just seems a perfunctory replay of the Mando pitch: he's a ruthless bounty hunter with a heart of gold! At least in the case of Mando you could imagine there was some weird bond between him and Grogu that was bringing out his soft side. But in the case of Boba, his decision to suddenly become the Richard the Lionheart of Tatooine never really gets any explanation. And the supporting cast is very bland. The only stand-out to me is the weaselly aide of the mayor who somehow heroically drags a memorable performance out of the wooden dialogue he's given to work with. (David Pasquesi, I'll look for him now.)

Pasquesi is a legendary improv artist; making a silk purse out of a sow's ear has been his livelihood for decades.

really hated how nü fett's default state is without helmet. he takes off his helmet so freaking much! terrible. i get that the showrunners need a way to distinguish him from mando and you're probably paying temeura a lot for that face and continuity with attack of the clones. but '80 fett says that the helmet stays on during sex!

oh yeah other people totally OTM that it's really hard to square "he's worth a lot to me - he's no good to me dead" fett with "these are my people who I must selflessly protect" bad nü fett, regardless of whatever lizardworms entered his brain!

Where can I hide the boy? Perhaps with his actual biological next of kin just in the same house they've always been in where they're easy to find. But for myself, I'll need a whole new identity — Ben Kenobi, they'll never crack that one.

Not sure about that Fifth Brother look

groovypanda, Thursday, 10 March 2022 08:12 (four years ago)

genuinely never thought we'd reach a point where there was generalized nostalgia for the phenomenally shitty "first trilogy" but here we are i guess

tbf, Ob-Ewan is one of the (very) few saving graces of the prequels, so I don't mind more of him.

if i had to pick the most unobjectionable element of those movies, it's definitely mcgregor

It's an absolutely real thing, no lie, that for a lot of people who were my age when the originals came out that they're VERY fond of said first trilogy, compounded by The Clone Wars series' impact.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 March 2022 15:40 (four years ago)

Yeah Clone Wars - both the Tartakovsky and Filoni versions - did a lot to redeem the prequels.

I’ll always feel bad for McGregor though for having to utter the line “I have seen a security hologram of him... killing younglings!”

Eps 4 - 6 look like a war in a war-weary universe

Eps 1- 3 look like a screensaver

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 March 2022 15:55 (four years ago)

Yglesias sucks but he's not wrong in that tweet upthread.

obviously, the reason that plot point doesn't work is because Lucas hadn't worked that part out yet when he wrote the first one, Ben was more or less just observing him from a distance to protect him and possibly recruit him later, not "hiding Luke from the dark side on his father's home planet using his father's actual surname".

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 March 2022 15:57 (four years ago)

that's kinda why I get so annoyed with neo-Star Wars gatekeepers who call things "not true Star Wars" on the basis of some plot points that don't line up perfectly, because the OG trilogy was full of holes and contradictions and who actually gives a fuck.

remember leaving the Common Area of my dorm freshman year of college because two groups of about 10-15 people started getting into a heated argument about the Clone Wars, with chairs being overturned and stuff

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 March 2022 15:59 (four years ago)

I definitely did not expect the soundtrack to the trailer to lean so heavily on the first trilogy score.

was hoping it'd be some Marlon Brando sounding guy singing "star warrrr, sta-aa-aar warrrrrs, sta-staaaa-aa-aaar warrrs, sta-aa-arrr wars" to the original theme

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 March 2022 16:02 (four years ago)

still haven't finished Fett, mostly because I've never given a fuck about Boba Fett, but I'll get around to it. much more excited for this one, as Obi-Wan deserves a nice reclamation project after what they did to him in the prequels.

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 March 2022 16:03 (four years ago)

Just jump to the last three episodes of Fett or, hell, just the last one.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 11 March 2022 16:11 (four years ago)

Not caring about Fett before watching seems to be the easiest path to enjoyment. Watch them all. It's a great series.

surfjan otm, that was me — i love star wars but i have never ever given more than two shits about boba fett & i enjoyed the show a lot, chill vibe appreciated imo

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 12 March 2022 02:31 (four years ago)

two weeks pass...

Almost skipped Book of Boba Fett until I found out it ties in to Mandalorian, so good job Star Wars for forcing me to watch everything you make a la Marvel. But it was quite enjoyable! Yes it's ridden with cliches but this was easily as entertaining as the last season of Mando (I mean, it is Mando for half the season). I feel like SW has gotten into a good groove lately, will certainly watch Obi-Wan

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 25 May 2022 15:06 (four years ago)

Right, Obi-Wan then.

not really a spoiler but just wanted to note that this show’s opening scene was extremely unfortunate, given recent events :/

Roz, Friday, 27 May 2022 15:06 (four years ago)

Quite, but here we are, sadly.

But phew...hell of a start overall, those two episodes. And canny bastards they got where nearly all of the trailer scenes were from these two episodes.

And of course the one character there wasn't a hint of at all.

And in terms of the featured cast...how you say, a guy known for other things a little more than acting, though obviously has done some acting already. I literally went "Wait is THAT...?!"

Ned Raggett, Friday, 27 May 2022 16:57 (four years ago)

Especially if they make a variant with his more well known persona, only substituting a strapped-on lightsaber for a sock.

(And seeing the name in the familiar end credits font/backdrop absolutely did my brain in.)
