its really fun seeing them doing basically the same bits but allowing themselves to outwardly laugh and enjoy it

my respect for Gregg went up tenfold when he ranked the Doobie Brothers higher than the Velvet Underground

So there is an hourlong (!!!) Valentines Day special and it’s already incredibly awkward 2 minutes in

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 05:33 (two years ago) link

Lmao at the horribly dyslexic Tim trying to read a bunch of wallet IDs

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 05:44 (two years ago) link

Can HEI Network stuff be easily / reliably streamed to a TV, or is it intended to be computer-based?

bad luck banging, or Lorna Doone (sic), Tuesday, 15 February 2022 07:18 (two years ago) link

you can cast all of it, it’s all youtube and vimeo

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 February 2022 13:08 (two years ago) link

I clicked on the Office Hours at random and landed on Tim's dead-on Tom Waits impression.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 13:40 (two years ago) link

I couldn’t watch it the website seemed to be slammed

Johnny Mathis der Maler (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 15 February 2022 13:58 (two years ago) link

i couldn't watch it live due to the site issues but i watched it this morning and it was great

aegis philbin (crüt), Wednesday, 16 February 2022 02:11 (two years ago) link

I'm more than happy to pay for it but the fact that you can't just like, YouTube it kinda sucks. I can cast it of course but casting is laggy at my house for some reason and kind of a hassle

probably having a couple of OC freaks over for the Oscar Special so I really hope they get things sorted out

Valentines Day special was great. Wendy Kirby sure does know how to look uncomfortable. Why was Tim all zonked out (again) in the end? He looked like he was roofied which has a uh....pretty dark implication

frogbs, Friday, 18 February 2022 04:39 (two years ago) link

I thought the same, though it could also be an after effect of health problems stemming from his all-shake diet. Tim’s in-character explanation was, “Those concerned with my health need not worry, aside from my diabetes which has returned I was so excited about the special i was administered a mild sedative intravenously before our acoustic Empty Bottle performance."

blatherskite, Friday, 18 February 2022 15:03 (two years ago) link

in a members-only hei network article he claimed he was drowsy due to a mild sedative administered intravenously that apparently was necessary b/c he was so excited about the special

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 18 February 2022 18:40 (two years ago) link

every appearance of Manuel he is more and more like Tommy Wiseau. specifically the way he acts as "Johnny" in The Room.

one thing I love about Heidecker's stuff is how he finds people who are just naturally funny and just makes room for them in the series. I can't think of anything else that has such a strange and assorted cast

took a break from my rewatch when i got to mister america, but i've since resumed and just finished oscar special 8. i was legitimately going to produce a ranking with detailed explanations of each placement (e.g. i feel like anytime one of gregg's finales is sort of good/successful it's automatically a lesser oscar special, cf. the living painting, kramer vs. kramer 2), but it turns out they're still very hard to rank. 5 (jaws 2, mark suffocates) is my pick for the best, 7 on its heels for containing gregg's best finale

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 28 February 2022 16:05 (two years ago) link

finally going to watch the heilots and season 12! i'm so excited

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 28 February 2022 16:06 (two years ago) link

one consistent thing about the Oscar Specials is that the Mark Proksch bits are always the funniest parts, so I was bummed that he was barely in the last one. god the 6th Special where he's hooked up to all those life support machines and Gregg is "interviewing" him, asking why so and so wasn't nominated and getting the response "It was a truuuue traaagedy"...a soundbite from one of the earlier Oscar specials

when I rewatched the 5th one I was left wondering if anyone watching live actually thought something happened to Mark? they break the 4th wall just enough in that part, you definitely don't feel like you're watching a comedy anymore

frogbs, Monday, 28 February 2022 16:14 (two years ago) link

i would make the same argument, with the only exception being that mark isn't in 7 at all. 7 was very special though, the culmination of everything that had been building since tim's tantrum at the end of season 10 and mister america

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 28 February 2022 16:17 (two years ago) link

I watched the 5th Oscar Special live, and while I didn't think Mark was actually in IRL danger, it was definitely the most shocking thing I'd seen on the series by that point

aegis philbin (crüt), Monday, 28 February 2022 16:19 (two years ago) link

and gregg's concept for the 7th special was perfect: dressed as the joker, the mobile vfa decked out with arthur memorabilia intended as a preview for the next year's 40th anniversary celebration...

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 28 February 2022 16:20 (two years ago) link

i forgot to mention this at the time but one of the most amazing scenes in season x is when it cuts to a gregg segment and in the 360 vr view you can see mark in bed hooked up to machines

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 28 February 2022 16:31 (two years ago) link

For me the “James Dean” reveal ending of one of the earlier Oscar Specials was the most shocking mainly because I wasn’t sure if the guy was aware what was going on, or if he actually believed he was James Dean.

Johnny Mathis der Maler (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 28 February 2022 18:21 (two years ago) link

that was the third one! which is probably my favorite after 5 and 7. mark as the three stooges is the peak of comedy

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Monday, 28 February 2022 18:31 (two years ago) link

as far as I could gather the James Dean guy was the sort of person who appeared on Tim & Eric, they're acting but maybe not 100% aware of what the show is or what kind of humor they're going for. from what I've heard the bit in the Oscar Special where Tim is really yelling at him wound up rattling him and he had to be calmed down after the shoot. I guess the panic in his eyes was real. also seems he was declining mentally pretty quickly which is why he had to be replaced in Decker.

I would love more Rock House, I think it's super cool when this show gets way outside of its own universe. that's what makes the trial so great. also Ax and Manuel are just naturally funny in this context. its so on the nose it almost could've aired as-is on MTV 10 years ago

Xposed is also really funny but the humor is very similar to Decker. Rock House is just something else entirely

frogbs, Tuesday, 1 March 2022 20:36 (two years ago) link

i did really love rock house, manuel in particular shines

last episode was maybe the best OC episode ever. that Dr. San reveal is so funny. and of course the D4 music video. I was just like....how did we get to this point

Xposed is really funny too. I wonder if LaRue gets to even see the scripts before filming.

frogbs, Wednesday, 2 March 2022 15:15 (two years ago) link

my favorite part about Xposed is that much of it appears to be plagiarized word-for-word from wikipedia and conspiracy theory sites

terri parks was also phenomenal in the penultimate episode

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 March 2022 15:38 (two years ago) link

yeah I was pretty stunned by that because afaik she isnt really in anything else? in terms of pure acting talent she's the second best actor on the show...first of course being Joe Estevez (sorry, the numbers don't lie)

Behind the scenes of the bizarro ‘On Cinema Oscar Special’

“My character is in self-imposed isolation from reality,” Turkington says, “and Tim’s is a psycho. He’s just a bad guy, and people are happy when they escape his clutches. Tim also doesn't know anything about movies, but he knows that I’m full of shit. Though he does believe that I have some movie knowledge that is helpful to the show. I just think that, unfortunately — like a lot of relationships — we don’t like each other, but we need each other.”
