He’ll never do it but it might be worth him mentioning that the party opposite had that beast to Chequers, knighted him, gave him a skeleton key to Broadmoor, and were happy to have him campaign for their party as late as 2010, and as to prosecuting journalists? Phone hacking.

the thin blue lying (suzy), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 09:27 (four years ago)

If KS was the kind of politician who’d say any of that, he wouldn’t have journalists queuing up to decide that this, now, is an outrage. Thinking of this quote from Jimmy C (whose statue I’m visiting tomorrow!)

We regard capitalist journalism as an effective weapon in the hands of a well-informed, but utterly unscrupulous, enemy, rather than merely as an unbiased recorder of passing events.

— James Connolly (@ConnollyEbooks) February 8, 2022

mardheamac (gyac), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 09:32 (four years ago)

You are neglecting your duty as long as you allow your City Hall to be in the power of men who, as landlords, derive their living from the rents they extort out of the poisonous slums in which they are slowly murdering the children of the working class.

— James Connolly (@ConnollyEbooks) February 8, 2022

still otm

calzino, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 09:38 (four years ago)

Literally any quote of his from more than a century ago is more otm than every journalist in Westminster combined! Too bad he was from Edinburgh.

It is necessary in Ireland as well as in England to emphasise the point that the policy of the capitalist at present throughout the world is the policy of pretended sympathy with working class aspirations.

And a Hibee to boot.

Bastards of Fish (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 10:00 (four years ago)

A great man. Where is the statue?

the pinefox, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 10:14 (four years ago)

The top of old Abbey Street, I’ll take a picture for you!

http://www.talkingstatuesdublin.ie/statues/connolly/

I think if Connolly could have chosen, Tom, he’d have been born in Glasgow. I notice Edinburgh doesn’t have a statue of him.

mardheamac (gyac), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 10:20 (four years ago)

from what I've seen Kieth seems quite a lot more evasive and nervous on defending his decision not to prosecute Worboys for additional crimes. And he was personally responsible for that one. But that's one they'll detonate at a later date if he's still LOTO.

calzino, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 10:30 (four years ago)

(xp) there has been talk of having a statue to him in Edinburgh for a while, you can imagine why the council might have reservations about it. To be fair to Edinburgh, there was a massive Irish community there and the Hibs were the first Scottish team to represent that community in Scotland, Celtic came later.

Bastards of Fish (Tom D.), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 10:45 (four years ago)

So, are there any JC initialled people to come?

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 11:01 (four years ago)

Jeremy Clarkson?

calzino, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 11:03 (four years ago)

(Presses button again)

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 11:03 (four years ago)

One point from last night’s protest is the protestors shouting Freemason at @Keir_Starmer. I don’t know whether he is, but this is nothing to be ashamed of, Freemasons do wonderful work in communities across the UK and I’m very proud to be one

— Gary Sambrook MP (@GarySambrook89) February 8, 2022

Mark G, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 13:47 (four years ago)

I'm a bit surprised at the feeling that I have never actually seen Connolly's statue, though I have walked around those streets enough times. It must be near Liberty Hall, if that's still what the socialist skyscraper is called?

the pinefox, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 16:09 (four years ago)

It's by the side of the Custom House, pf

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 16:17 (four years ago)

Let me be very clear - the remaining financial support of Labour Party is now under review. Your behaviour and mistreatment of our members will not be accepted. It's time to act like labour, be the party for workers. #CovBinStrike @coventrycc pic.twitter.com/yVZxVSa9IP

So I went there today and I’ve been in the area plenty and if you walk up from Abbey St, as I did, the statue is facing you, but if you come from the customs house side you could easily miss it.

The Charity Commission, which is an independent, non-ministerial government department, said: "We have been in ongoing contact with the trustees of the Captain Tom Foundation on its set-up and governance arrangements and as part of this work will now assess the charity's recently submitted accounts."

lol lol lol!

calzino, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 22:38 (four years ago)

tbf he probably deserved to be ruthlessly exploited and murdered by his own family

calzino, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 22:43 (four years ago)

I have definitely missed that statue in the past - a bad omission given that it looks like it should be easy to find. I would certainly have taken pictures had I ever found it.

People can knock Dublin but to me it remains quite impressive that it has statues of Connolly, Larkin and Joyce within a kilometre of each other.

the pinefox, Thursday, 10 February 2022 10:18 (four years ago)

Sounds like a good reason to revisit, pf!

mardheamac (gyac), Thursday, 10 February 2022 10:28 (four years ago)

Yes, I hope to do so this year -- which will be basically the first time I have been anywhere since 2019. (Which is when I saw the Heaney exhibition on Westmoreland Street - that was a marvellous surprise.)

[This is now going very off topic for the thread that's mainly about people's justified hatred of the LOTO.]

the pinefox, Thursday, 10 February 2022 12:37 (four years ago)

Pf you should come on the autumn meet-up then

Truss’ visit to Moscow going about as well as expected.

Things behind the scenes were even worse, according to @ElenaChernenko.

Lavrov said, "Do you recognize Russia's sovereignty over Rostov and Voronezh oblasts?"

Truss said the UK would "never" do so – before the ambassador told her they're not in Ukrainehttps://t.co/n2FkadhSHY

The EHRC seems to have completely lost the plot. This would not simply be bad advice for a human rights org to give, it’s clearly illegal:

https://www.vice.com/en/article/3ab5my/leaked-ehrc-guidance-trans-people-gender-recognition-certificates

I guess that’s why they haven’t published it but it’s an astonishing position they’ve put themselves in.

Thank you, Barry.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Thursday, 10 February 2022 20:19 (four years ago)

lol some big shoes to fill there for whoever is selected to succeed big Bazza!

Dick shouldn't have even had a top level police career after being the cop in the control room during the cold blooded murder of Jean Charles de Menezes. But Kieth was giving her his full support to her just a couple of months back and talking about his time working with her in glowing terms.

calzino, Thursday, 10 February 2022 20:40 (four years ago)

yes. I mean she obviously should have lost her job at the very least. instead she basically Steve Coogan swimming pool security guarded it away and ended up promoted.
