We watched the first five episodes of S6 the last few days. First episode felt off a bit - some worse than usual CGI, a lot of cuts to black that halted the flow, and the Filip/Yoan scenes were badly acted - but it picked up in episode 2 and now I'm fully invested again. I found the book this season is based on to be a bit of a slog but the TV writers have pared it down to the most exciting/interesting moments, as well as added some good new stuff

yeah his acting face is the same as “riding electric scooter for the first time”

clearly the ending will involve Filip, Naomi and Holden riding electric scooters together as a family lol

Pretty satisfying finale. While the action scenes didn't quite match the best ones in previous seasons, I was very drawn in. Some nice quiet moments among the Roci crew. The Laconia storyline was handled pretty poorly in the season though - it was a lot of setup with zero closure. Feels like the writers included it in order to will the next 3 seasons to happen lol. Think it would have been more effective to just have a few minute tease at the end of the finale where we see Duerte observing Xan and the protomolecule ship

Vinnie, Friday, 14 January 2022 14:59 (four years ago)

I am late to this one. I picked up the first book in the series because it was offered for cheap on Amazon. At first, I thought it was pretty generic sci-fi, but it captured my attention pretty quickly. Still on the fence about whether to watch the series.

there’s a book thread if you want to check that out, jim

just when i thought the filip redemption arc couldn't get any worse

mookieproof, Friday, 14 January 2022 23:07 (four years ago)

good to see some things happening! there was nothing like the intensity of previous seasons though, no real cost to anything

holden in an oxford - i know, i know, it’s serious

when drummer says holden and bobby’s plan for the assault is “ingenious, actually - would make a belter proud” and holden gulps and says “thank you” i stated bawling

however i’m happy that the plan ended up being to use protomolecule ring magic to kill marco rather than boring old bullets

Neanderthal called it w the Filip name change!

assault on the railguns intense as fuck.
psychedelic tron shit. low angle of bobby blasting hell for leather from her suit totally iconic

“as long as we’re going to kill marco, i’m in”

“we’re definitely doing that”

reader i yelped

tenye wa chesh gut

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 15 January 2022 00:49 (four years ago)

marco’s attempt to tell filip he should appreciate what he’s inheriting, filip looking around and just going “uh oh”

just working with your dad to soup up the fastest car that dad’s now driving at top speed toward a cliff with you in the passenger seat

when drummer says holden and bobby’s plan for the assault is “ingenious, actually - would make a belter proud” and holden gulps and says “thank you” i stated bawling

thought it was hilarious that they say they'll explain it shortly, but then Avasarala leaves immediately before they do. wouldn't she be at least curious??

I was enjoying the ride of bad ass space battles but after the ring magic destroyed the Pella and they cut to Naomi I did get teary eyed. Otoh she did seem to get over it quickly

Can't remember the last time I was this bummed a show was ending. Sucks so hard this season couldn't have been twice as long.

ok so where does the zombie kid story arc go now? it was boring and i dont actually care but it feels like a loose end or was i out of the room for something

mark s, Saturday, 15 January 2022 20:42 (four years ago)

I assume those were protomolecule-infused 'dogs' doing the zombification and the planet would be a major storyline if the show got picked up elsewhere.

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 15 January 2022 20:45 (four years ago)

I think it was obliquely referenced in Holden's "we still don't know what happened to that missing protomolecule sample" and maybe the blue glimmering ship we saw? and the guy cutting Marco off?

all sorta handled by Naomi's "can we just worry about this later" (when there is a sequel?)

Short of an Expanse continuation, I'd like some kind of comedy series starring the actors who played Amos and Bobbie with Avasarala as a wacky neighbor.

The zombie kids are on Laconia, the planet colonized by the Mars navy defectors led by Duarte. The blue glowing ship thing was briefly mentioned as a dormant orbital platform left there by a prior civilization.

That prior civilization had some protomolecule stuff going on, and Duarte was given the sample in exchange for a lot of armaments and ships he traded to Marco.

I’m fine with having set that stuff up, not because it leaves the door open for more tv episodes, but due to the fact it leaves the world open. Holden and company aren’t creating some utopia, just addressing the challenges that continually pop up given the world the show’s created. Whether we see those stories as not, the universe is going to keep changing.

mh, Saturday, 15 January 2022 20:58 (four years ago)

ok sure but why was it so boring

mark s, Saturday, 15 January 2022 21:00 (four years ago)

it's worse than the blue wizards (also ptoro-molecule-related iirc)

mark s, Saturday, 15 January 2022 21:01 (four years ago)

fair

it’s the protomolecule curse, the more reasonable people use it to advance their material science a little and make new armor for ships and some gradual advances, the opportunistic and narcissistic will try to grab the golden ring and boast about how they’re going to fight gods (whoever nuked the prior protomolecule civilization)

mh, Saturday, 15 January 2022 21:08 (four years ago)

ok sure but why was it so boring

Because it was centered around annoying children (redundant, I know).

but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 15 January 2022 21:22 (four years ago)

got to agree with both of you here, zombie kids was tedious

calzino, Saturday, 15 January 2022 22:46 (four years ago)

i was carefully *not* reading the thread bcz i was coming to lots of it way late and i see everyone else already thought this many times

tbh i need to go back and rewatch the last 3 series with my legendary "metaphysics of scale" thesis in mind once more

mark s, Saturday, 15 January 2022 23:18 (four years ago)

the entire zombie kids arc would have been redeemed if zombie bro entered the house and started zapping them all with his eyes

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 15 January 2022 23:25 (four years ago)

real monkey's paw shit

or started talking to the revived orbiting station, yeah anything

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 15 January 2022 23:41 (four years ago)

I didn't mind the zombie kid thing because I did see it as an opportunity for the series to perhaps be spun off in another direction, which would be nice. Not many shows have captivated my attention the way this one has over the past few months.

people who have read the books: is there enough material left for another season/series/final movie?

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 15 January 2022 23:51 (four years ago)

There's enough left for three seasons.

:O

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Sunday, 16 January 2022 00:25 (four years ago)

Extremely much so.

Technically, the last couple of pages of the last book could be turned into a 10-season spin-off with a central character that would make most people round here extremely happy.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Sunday, 16 January 2022 00:31 (four years ago)

it was a pretty exciting/moving finale, lots of nice moments w everyone

i’m kinda glad now that it wasn’t a bloodbath - i thought it was just going to be kamikaze full out w bobby & amos & was like oh no wait wait i dont want everyone to die noooo - i was v relieved!!!

loved all those easter eggs in the assault team names, we had fun figuring some of them out (missed a lot tho!)

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 16 January 2022 06:10 (four years ago)

my friend told me that in the post-credits there wasn't a 'scene' (obviously), but a "hint" of something. anybody know what he's talking about? I'm afraid to ask him and seem like dummy.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 16 January 2022 06:40 (four years ago)

Shockingly satisfying finale given the shortened season and wasting 15% of each episode on the zombification dogs.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 16 January 2022 07:01 (four years ago)

Glad Bobbie and Amos didn’t go out like Gordo and Tracey
