I'm guessing that "obscure" UK famousers get less coverage in the US when they die than vice versa.

Mark G, Monday, 10 January 2022 09:34 (four years ago)

Ah im not picking on that niche usage of the thread im saying ive heard of bob saget for years but genuinely was he famous for maybe being in chat shows as a guest or what

pandmac (darraghmac), Monday, 10 January 2022 09:36 (four years ago)

He was a comedian who was on a hit sitcom and then became the host of America's Funniest Home Videos, but on the quiet was a pretty obscene stand-up. If you've seen the movie The Aristocrats, which is by no means obscure on either side of the Atlantic, you've seen Bob Saget and might remember him.

I've never heard of him tbh.

I actually do remember him from The Aristocrats and he was pretty funny in it but nothing outside of that

I only know of him because my kids watched Fuller House. RIP

groovypanda, Monday, 10 January 2022 09:54 (four years ago)

2022 dead people i had never previously heard of:
Jeanine Ann Roose
Max Julien
Igor and Grichka Bogdanoff
Karl Clauss Dietel
Dee Booher
Calvin Simon
Michael "Woodstock" Lang
Marilyn Bergman
Charles Brackeen

may my lack of memories of them be a blessing anyway

mookieproof, Monday, 10 January 2022 10:18 (four years ago)

Oh I know four of those!

Rip fella who seemed genuinely huge in the states but i still have no idea who or what he was or did

Yeah, although I knew he was in Full House I have never seen an actual episode. Bob for me was one of those names that always comes up in podcasts amongst other comedians. I recently watched him in an episode of Larry Sanders, which might have been the only time I've ever seen him perform.

RIP Bob!

T'was not a comment about this thread, which is pan-world..

Mark G, Monday, 10 January 2022 12:04 (four years ago)

If you've ever watched three minutes of ANY retrospective on Woodstock, you've seen Michael Lang. You couldn't beat him away from a spot in front of an interview camera with a bat.

Investigative journalist Andrew Jennings died on Saturday January 8, 2022 after a brief, sudden illness.

During a lifetime of “chasing bad men” Andrew exposed corruption at Scotland Yard, at the Olympics and at FIFA.

This is great

I have a Bob Saget story to share.

I never really met him. But in 2007 Guster was playing at the Boston Opera House. We noticed that Saget was performing a sold out show at the Orpheum down the street, and we thought it’d be funny to invite him to appear on stage with us...

Gary Waldhorn, who most of you know as David from the Vicar of Dibley but I typically know as a very varied jobbing actor including Hammer House of Horror, Whodunnit, Space 1999 and Crown Court. And obviously his recurring part as Viscount Biscuits in Bosom Manor.

Magawa, a rat who sniffed out over 100 land mines and other explosives in Cambodia over a yearslong career, has died.

The charity that awarded him with a gold medal for his lifesaving contributions noted that "his legacy will live on for decades to come." https://t.co/smtmeZvknF pic.twitter.com/8sT5VHocxO

Terry Teachout. I haven't read much of his work, but I liked his Duke Ellington biography (a lot of others didn't; it was deemed insufficiently reverent).

He was a really good and important theater critic (longtime for The Wall Street Journal). Often reviewed outside of NYC and outside of hyped/commercial theater.
