That number, by the way, I suspect largely stems from exposure *outside* of the school. Sports, family, friends, etc.

Yesterday was Thursday. The kids had their first day of school on Tuesday. Omicrom is fast, but not that fast.

Not questioning why you conjectured; conjecturing why you don’t allow that info to inform your opinions about future mitigation including e.g. temporary shutdown

america's favorite (remy bean), Friday, 7 January 2022 14:41 (two years ago) link

Huh? They can shutdown everything as far as I'm concerned. They should have taken a break after (um) winter break and had a plan in place to deal with this rather than just let cooties run rampant.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 January 2022 14:45 (two years ago) link

And yet there are something like four covid threads on the go for the same people to breathlessly post updates about every related thought they have, while ilx itself is comatose, and you think this is normal?

If there's a "Fuck COVID" thread I can't find it. My Aunt Donna's health has been fragile for the last several years. Last year she moved into assisted living. I just learned that recently 1) she had a UTI, 2) was briefly hospitalized for not waking up, and 3) while at the hospital was found to be COVID-positive (despite full vaccination and booster). Her mental acuity varies from day to day. She's back in assisted living, but for hospice/palliative care. Fuck COVID, and 2022 so far has more than the RDA of shittiness.

Xp I’m very sorry for your aunt’s condition, but that actually underlines what I was saying, given the people in question are posting much more with much less reason.

I guess it’s bizarre if you can’t or won’t read it. But hey, since you like popping off at people here’s your opportunity!

mardheamac (gyac), Friday, 7 January 2022 18:35 (two years ago) link

No interest in popping off on anyone, I'm just tired of you beating this particular drum. I think you're wrong to be so annoyed by how people are posting itt.

If you think, gyac, LX is comatose, I direct you to the year-end music thread and the excelsior thread

here's a thing that I feel like this thread illustrates for me about ilx -- is that there seems like a big difference in how posters think of threads. Are threads more like conversations, where what to post and how often one posts is contextual in terms of other people's participation ... or, are threads more like folders, where the issue is "does my post belong in the categorical topic of this thread" and appropriateness is more related to folder-type issues like "searchability" ... from a "thread is like a folder" standpoint, yes, gyac's point is "bizarre" -- from a "thread is like a conversation" -- it is a pretty understandable and crucial point.

Fwiw I did read your complaint and I'm truly sorry about your struggles. I guess I just don't see anything THAT out of line with what people are sharing. Some of us do have to test quite frequently (I'm back to having to test weekly for work), so of course some people are going to share results far more often than others. I guess if you have a problem with people sharing their testing experiences in general, that's a different conversation I guess. And with people stuck at home, working remotely, isolated or whatever, maybe coming to this thread is one of the few outlets they have to share.

I mean, I know I did my fair share of doomposting last year that annoyed a whole lot of folks and, in retrospect, I wish I hadn't done so. But, hell, it was the reality of how (poorly) I was processing the pandemic at that point and I'll own it.

tl;dr - I'm choosing to give folks itt a ton of leeway with how they want to use it, even when it annoys. it's a still raging global pandemic and we all process it differently

I’m not really bothered about the opinion of someone who read posts where I mentioned being suicidal and chose to focus on “ilx isn’t dead”, sorry.

mardheamac (gyac), Friday, 7 January 2022 18:52 (two years ago) link

the post was about a specific type of repetitive behavior, i think it was clear enough and understood it well. it wasn't a comment about individual posts being the "wrong" way to use a thread.

I apologize for using "dead" in a sentence. You made it sound in your posts, though, as if ILX's COVID posts had quashed other threads.

I've reread the last day of posts a couple of times and have no idea what this argument is about, tbh. I'm just going to keep posting to this thread the way I always have. Lmk if it's out of line.

Id only weigh in to note that a retort of "where else should all the covid shitposting go, a NON-covid thread? dont be silly! !1!1!1!1!" is surely somewhat a wilful evasion of the points raised

But yis are correct ofc, nobody has to read any thread about anything, blogging vomitously in all threads is in fact good now

there is a group that thinks posting in bulk about covid is healthy in a "let those frustrations out, mate" sense. another group thinks posting in bulk about covid is annoying. gyac thinks the former group is wrong because, actually, posting in bulk about covid is both unhealthy and annoying. Private Hudson says "game over, man" while picking up debris from the explosion.

I must admit I haven’t really seen the problem with one or two of the posts that dmac, gyac & others have singled out with this complaint - eg taken in isolation reposting commentary on news from health experts seems to me a straightforwardly benign & on-topic use of these threads tbh (& stuff posted with the explicit purpose of countering “doomposting” being folded into “doomposting” idk)

But that’s in isolation - I def can see the argument that some posters could stand to chill a bit & not be constantly set to Transmit, & if enough ppl are saying it…

For me these threads are fine because I tend to skim over a lot of the longer posts & mainly use it for updates as I don’t follow this stuff anywhere else anymore

I am uncomfortable with “oh, we’re all virology experts now?” type scoffing because it’s a bit too close to the “hipster analysis” thing, ordinary ppl are allowed opinions on public health policy that affects them, this is a discussion board ppl discuss things, we are gonna discuss the ongoing catastrophe we are all living thru — but if a number of posters are finding it hard to use the threads for that purpose because of a sense some ppl are monologising rather than discussing that is worth considering

That's a reasonable post wins, maybe the answer might be gently suggesting something directly to the specific poster(s) in question instead of hoping to accomplish the result via oblique swipes?

This does not go for you personally because you actually did go back and read my post and replied to me civilly and for that I thank you, but I made my point, I thought, pretty clearly and I’ve had Alfred and someone old enough to be my actual dad come up and start scoffing at me as though my point was not made in seriousness, as though it was a completely unreasonable out of the blue point about anxiety and how unrelenting this feels… and ofc I guess some people just can’t resist having a go at a mentally ill woman ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ? So I read this and think, that’s all very well, but even when you spell it out for people some are inclined not to hear. So.

mardheamac (gyac), Friday, 7 January 2022 20:08 (two years ago) link

gyac, I apologize with every breath in me. I did read your posts. I just couldn't understand implicitly or explicitly casting shade on other posters for whom data, testing updates, and other detritus form their own ways of coping. Certainly I'm with you: sometimes I roll my eyes and don't click on the thread for a couple days, especially when I've got a WhatsApp thread with a buddy who doomposts every hour.

In any event, accept my apologies.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 January 2022 20:14 (two years ago) link

xpost - Fwiw the "oblique swipes" wasn't aimed at you or any other specific poster, just a general comment on how there seems to be a lot of times where someone makes a (maybe valid, maybe not) complaint about behavior in a thread in an oblique, rather than direct, way. I get that you can't always control how the other person responds to the request (ime, a problem irl too!), but it seems like if you don't address the specific behavior by any certain specific poster you are even less likely so see a change.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 January 2022 20:18 (two years ago) link

likely "to" see a change

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 January 2022 20:18 (two years ago) link

i think part of gyac's concern is not the anxiety posting itself but the enabling of it from people who should know better (which applies to me, and is duly noted).

The reference to me is plain enough. Rather than scoffing, I was chuckling. You aimed to poke Alfred in the eye and managed to poke your own at the same time.
