Not sure what "hot sold in Middle East" means? Perhaps a mistranslation of a "hot seller in the Middle East"?

Misprint of "not sold in middle east"?

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 4 January 2022 17:35 (four years ago)

Possibly.. it seems the bins are of an EU standard form factor.

o. nate, Tuesday, 4 January 2022 18:28 (four years ago)

- no satellite dishes anywhere? They're banned in Iran, Myanmar, Turkmenistan... Don't know if that's a clue?

Assuming the city is in the northern hemisphere, the shadows indicate we're looking at the north side of that block of flats, and satellite dishes would be on the southern side of the building.

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 5 January 2022 13:30 (four years ago)

Just realised it doesn't matter what hemisphere it is: if this is south of the equator, we're looking at the south side of the building, and the dishes would be on the north.

i don't know why this one is so hard. TV tower? not Almaty

StanM, Sunday, 16 January 2022 16:24 (four years ago)

I guess they look like olive trees, I suppose it'll be somewhere like Macedonia or Albania

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 17 January 2022 05:39 (four years ago)

I think it's Porto and that's the Villa Nova de Gaia TV tower

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Monday, 17 January 2022 09:15 (four years ago)

Definitely feels like Portugal but that tv tower doesn't look like the Villa Nova de Gaia, which also appears to have a red and white lattice mast and a smaller tower (which does look like the one in the above pic) adjacent

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 17 January 2022 10:20 (four years ago)

possibly, I thought the match was good enough given the distance from the tower in the photo, but you may well be right. It was the small cobbled pavement that made me think Portugal or maybe Spain.

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Monday, 17 January 2022 10:22 (four years ago)

I've google image searched tv tower portugal, tv tower spain, ... sardinia corsica italy sicily france switzerland austria hungary slovakia slovenia croatia montenegro kosovo macedonia bosnia albania greece romania bulgaria moldova ukraine turkey georgia

maybe it isn't a TV tower after all. Some of them look kinda like this one (sofia/vitosha, for instance) but not exactly. Or we're not in Southern Europe. I don't know. :(

weird photo, looks like a digital collage from an architect's mock up. hint of blue on the left side of the car number plate - eu maybe?

two sleeps till brooklyn (ledge), Thursday, 20 January 2022 14:04 (four years ago)

the 'BUS', the P for parking and the X no stopping sign could all be the uk, but for the wrong side of the road thing that's going on.

also uk buildings are generally more finished than that one.

koogs, Thursday, 20 January 2022 16:36 (four years ago)

That looks like a jacaranda tree behind the lamp post, native to So America, but widely planted elsewhere.

nickn, Thursday, 20 January 2022 18:19 (four years ago)

what's that yellow pattern/painting on the road? some kind of optical thing that should be seen from a particular angle?

StanM, Thursday, 20 January 2022 20:26 (four years ago)

It's a box junction ("do not enter unless your exit is clear"), weirdly elongated.

two sleeps till brooklyn (ledge), Thursday, 20 January 2022 20:39 (four years ago)

don't have that in Belgium, which does narrow it down :-)

StanM, Thursday, 20 January 2022 21:23 (four years ago)

is that a german postbox?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 20 January 2022 23:11 (four years ago)

There are several trees there that look like jacarandas, which grow in warm climates so I doubt they have many of them in Germany. The cobblestones, the jacarandas, the racial mix of people and the sort of rundown air all make me think of a suburb in a Portuguese city, or at least somewhere in Southern Europe.

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 21 January 2022 00:08 (four years ago)

Photo 2 - there's some graffiti mid-right that looks a bit to me like coracao - or at least it looks like it has a tilde over one of the letters

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 21 January 2022 00:27 (four years ago)

one of them says cego which means blind in both portuguese and spanish, and the place does look iberian

lag∞n, Friday, 21 January 2022 00:32 (four years ago)

Intrigued by that large yellow boxy thing behind the lamp post.

o. nate, Friday, 21 January 2022 01:37 (four years ago)

according to my googling spanish mailboxes are yellow but tbh more lemony than that one

lag∞n, Friday, 21 January 2022 02:39 (four years ago)

clothes recycling collection? glass recycling?

StanM, Friday, 21 January 2022 02:50 (four years ago)

Well the "no stopping" and "parking" signs are standard EU

feeling pretty convinced this is Lisbon

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 21 January 2022 03:33 (four years ago)

It's Lisbon, the Benfica Railway Station area:

Note about that TV tower:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsanto_Forest_Park
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parque_Florestal_de_Monsanto#Antenas_de_Monsanto:
“Thanks to the dominant position in relation to the entire Lisbon region, Monsanto was equipped with several antennas. Among these stands out the Centro Emissor de Monsanto, a communications tower of Portugal Telecom, which succeeded the former antenna of RTP. With a height of 100 meters, it is one of the tallest structures in Portugal.”

kousenband, Friday, 21 January 2022 08:40 (four years ago)

Nice one! I looked at the aerial views and gave up, however did you figure out which part of town?

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 21 January 2022 08:42 (four years ago)

nice one!

StanM, Friday, 21 January 2022 09:18 (four years ago)

The last picture gave me strong Lisbon vibes, more specifically it reminded me of Sete-Rios station, where we embarked on a train or metro every morning while staying in Lisbon in 2019 to venture into the city centre or away from it. Confirmed by the box junction thing: Wikipedia only mentions Malta, Cyprus and Portugal as Southern European countries where it’s in use. Streetview showed some very similar buildings along the railway to the ones in the second pic when exiting the station, so I decided to move down the line away from the centre, further into the suburbs. Hit the jackpot at the very next station. Locating pics 1 and 3 took a bit more time.

kousenband, Friday, 21 January 2022 09:25 (four years ago)

picture two looks to be taken from a freight train

koogs, Friday, 21 January 2022 12:35 (four years ago)

and the yellow thing is vestuario usado = used clothes

StanM, Friday, 21 January 2022 13:36 (four years ago)

Good work kousenband!

I didn't expect this one to be so tricky, at least after the second pic anyway. Good work on getting all shots, wanted to keep them as close together as possible while showing something different

And yes, the shot of outside the station is oddly reminiscent of an architects mock-up photo. The lighting, and maybe the way the people are placed
