I thought it might go from the train monitor in the first image, but it's difficult to tell how clear the words are for other people (especially when you already know what they are). How things appear on my laptop screen and monitor screen is pretty different!

What made you expand to the east? The Peak District ish hill in the distance?

The second pic solidified my hunch that it was Greater Manchester, I'd been concentrating on Salford and Manchester itself but your recent trend towards towns and, yeah, the hills in the distance made me go back and check Stockport and the outer towns

So is this now officially the Guess the City or Town thread?

"City" means several related things, ONLY ONE OF WHICH is along the lines of "settlement awarded so-called city status by arbitrary convention or decree within a given jurisdiction or linguistic pocket of this wide world", ffs. To me it seems entirely obvious that cities which city purists insist on calling towns should also be allowed.

New Year, New City

Feels like it could be anywhere from Southern Europe to Palestine/Israel maybe?

clutching at straws here:
- no satellite dishes anywhere? They're banned in Iran, Myanmar, Turkmenistan... Don't know if that's a clue?
- maybe the fencing on the bridge over the railroad it a bit excessive? did lots of people kill themselves there or are the trains important (israeli trains through palestine for instance) (don't know why I keep thinking palestine here to be honest)
- extra lights half way up the light posts? (two of them with bike tyres over them) ?
- some of the cars are French brands but they're sold all over the world, aren't they.

Those garbage bins look distinctive. Perhaps designed for a particular type of fully automatic garbage truck? Not sure how to search for that though.

Assuming the city is in the northern hemisphere, the shadows indicate we're looking at the north side of that block of flats, and satellite dishes would be on the southern side of the building.

Just realised it doesn't matter what hemisphere it is: if this is south of the equator, we're looking at the south side of the building, and the dishes would be on the north.

Definitely feels like Portugal but that tv tower doesn't look like the Villa Nova de Gaia, which also appears to have a red and white lattice mast and a smaller tower (which does look like the one in the above pic) adjacent

possibly, I thought the match was good enough given the distance from the tower in the photo, but you may well be right. It was the small cobbled pavement that made me think Portugal or maybe Spain.

maybe it isn't a TV tower after all. Some of them look kinda like this one (sofia/vitosha, for instance) but not exactly. Or we're not in Southern Europe. I don't know. :(

the 'BUS', the P for parking and the X no stopping sign could all be the uk, but for the wrong side of the road thing that's going on.

also uk buildings are generally more finished than that one.

That looks like a jacaranda tree behind the lamp post, native to So America, but widely planted elsewhere.

what's that yellow pattern/painting on the road? some kind of optical thing that should be seen from a particular angle?

It's a box junction ("do not enter unless your exit is clear"), weirdly elongated.

don't have that in Belgium, which does narrow it down :-)

There are several trees there that look like jacarandas, which grow in warm climates so I doubt they have many of them in Germany. The cobblestones, the jacarandas, the racial mix of people and the sort of rundown air all make me think of a suburb in a Portuguese city, or at least somewhere in Southern Europe.
