Lib Dems really looking like a government in waiting now imo.

There have been 6 by elections since the 2019 election and Labour have got their lowest vote share since the creation of the seat in 4 of these by-elections

Hate the LDs all you like for present and past misdemeanours, but sooner or later you have to face up to the fact that the second most likely outcome whenever the next GE happens after a Tory victory isn't a Labour victory, it's that the parliamentary maths gives Lab+LD combined the most seats. What then? Coalition or confidence & supply agreement?

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 17 December 2021 17:20 (four years ago)

Irrelevant to me given the current Labour policies

let's make lunch and listen to five finger death punch (Noodle Vague), Friday, 17 December 2021 17:24 (four years ago)

would've thought it was relevant to all of us!

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 17 December 2021 17:25 (four years ago)

And I'm sure the Lib Dems would be prepared to reluctantly go into coalition with the Tories

let's make lunch and listen to five finger death punch (Noodle Vague), Friday, 17 December 2021 17:25 (four years ago)

What makes anyone think the Lib Dems are keen to help out the Labour party this time though? Is it just vibes? Genuine q because I've no idea what they stand for.

glumdalclitch, Friday, 17 December 2021 17:26 (four years ago)

A government that doesn't do anything to address poverty and inequality isn't relevant to anybody who cares about those things

let's make lunch and listen to five finger death punch (Noodle Vague), Friday, 17 December 2021 17:26 (four years ago)

^ this. It would be just newly interesting ways of presenting the same policies of rubbing our faces in the dirt

glumdalclitch, Friday, 17 December 2021 17:29 (four years ago)

Glumdalclitch: I would think the logical answer is that KS's Labour, unlike JC's, is extraordinarily mendacious, corrupt and right-wing, and this would appeal to the LDs and make them feel comfortable about being in a coalition or agreement.

the pinefox, Friday, 17 December 2021 17:56 (four years ago)

I think Grandpoint Genie is correct to say that one should consider what actual outcomes may occur.

Whether one actually welcomes these outcomes (KS as PM?) is another matter.

mardheamac (gyac), Friday, 17 December 2021 18:03 (four years ago)

Vote Labour for the “good guys” except they aren’t going to do anything about the things that matter to you and they’ll be calling you antisemitic if you object to anything or do anything other than shutting the fuck up and handing over your vote no questions asked.

mardheamac (gyac), Friday, 17 December 2021 18:05 (four years ago)

Not sure I understand this comment. Is being a "brave thinker" good? It sounds good. To my knowledge, I've never been suppressed by anyone. I remember my friend Dog Latin being ripped an extra one on one of this thread's antecedents, though.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 17 December 2021 18:12 (four years ago)

So yes

mardheamac (gyac), Friday, 17 December 2021 18:13 (four years ago)

The Lib Dems would go into coalition with the Tories again in a heartbeat, they'd go into a coalition with Pol Pot, they just want to feel important for a change.

Classic Dorries

The process started with Oliver Dowden announcing he'd find a new Charity Commission Chair to push back on "woke" agendas; his successor Nadine Dorries swiftly appointed someone so unsuitable he's had to step down before starting. This is not how public appointments should work. https://t.co/sTDzKVj8Kj

I'd predict a 2.7% improvement in ministerial standards being maintained to a satisfactory level with a LabDem coalition of competence. But then unfortunately the Office of Value for Money on behalf of taxpayers did an audit and decided PIP payments were too open-handed. The NHS would still be doomed because it turns out lots of Labour ministers are compromised private health cronies as well. Lest we forget the Labour Right pin-up Owen Smith is now the UK government relations director for Bristol-Myers Squibb - that pharmaceutical behemoth that is facing a ÂŁ1bn law suit for using Guatemalan people as human guinea pigs and infecting them with syphilis in the 40's.

calzino, Friday, 17 December 2021 19:47 (four years ago)

The point surely is why did that narrative stick? Labour came second in 2019 & Starmer is meant to be someone who through a more sympathetic media than Corbyn can communicate with swing voters. The inability to persuade voters that Labour was a better bet is a major failure. https://t.co/aKKo2Z3tmY

OJ wrong again shocker!

calzino, Friday, 17 December 2021 20:27 (four years ago)

the only reason the narrative stuck so easily is because nobody likes Kieth. Even the fucking invisible man, Ed Gravy is a more palatable option to so called swing voters than that cunt.

calzino, Friday, 17 December 2021 20:30 (four years ago)

in this case swing voters = tory voters having a boo. But when Starmer has just spent the last year+ trying to appeal to these people and ends up getting a third of votes Corbyn got '17 and less than half than he did in '19 then that is a failure and a bad result for him. blah blah byelection rules apply etc... just don't make excuses for the cunt OJ, there is already enough people doing that.

Appalling.

Fourteen years in jail is the sort of sentence you might expect if criminal actions led to loss of life. It’s absolutely not what you’d anticipate for disorder. This is a troubling knee jerk sentence. https://t.co/OpLQJArQSG

The most serious thing he was convicted of, arson with intent to endanger life, will get you 10 years in most cases. The sentence might be excessive but somewhere around 10-12 is the minimum he was ever going to get, I think.

This is actually really infuriating. For most schools, the simple answer to her question is - we're not.

But there are schools in London, typically serving deprived communities, that have very polluted air. And kids die from it. That's poisoned air https://t.co/CF6P6F8I3Z

Tbf as much as none of us are responsible for our family's actions, if one of my siblings turned up at my workplace with gallows & was inciting the arson of my colleagues offices and killing them with hammers, I wouldn't think it unreasonable to expect public condemnation from me

The Graun is running a story with a pic of him enjoying wine and a cheese platter in the Downing st garden during the May '20 lockdown with a party of 20 people. On the hit parade of Tory outrages of the last decade it wouldn't even make the top 40 for me. I know some people feel genuine anger about this stuff but I feel like it's such trivial shit. But of course people who have suffered family losses and couldn't visit dying loved ones are fair enough to feel anger.
