What a shitshow.

Lol also if you scroll down to the second-next article after that, by the same writer, it's an article about Nellie Bowles but the tagline is "bowels". Fair play.

lmao they let Luke Winkie write for them, that about sums up Gawker 2.0

You have a section in this first chunk —

By the way do you consider yourself a journalist or just a pharmaceutical rep? Because that's what you sound like. You don't sound like a journalist. You sound like you're an apologist for the pharmaceutical industry, and for the government agencies that are aligned with them.

Yeah I put that on my business cards. So you have a section in the book called "Final Solution: Vaccines or Bust."

Excuse me?

You have a section — a sub header — in the book called "Final Solution: Vaccines or Bust."

Yeah.

That's a pretty pointed choice of words. Did you mean to invoke the Holocaust?

It says what it says.

Can you elaborate?

It says what it says.

not actualy a gawker project but the unfolding ian urbina debacle* maybe belongs on this thread**, if only for the way everything is flailingly unravelling for him

*(former NYT writer uses clout to harvest music contribitions for promotional projects surrounding his (seemingly solid and genuine) investigative journalism, racking up the largest number of composition co-credits in spotify history as a consequence, despite not composing a note himself: it's extremely unclear what money has been generated from this or where it's all going)

**(ok seems it's already linked on the youtubers whomst thread but maybe i wanna reboot it here, venmo me cash if you disagree)

Is anyone reading nu Gawker? Is it even worth it?

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 16 February 2022 18:33 (two years ago) link

I have not been, based on the first link on the front page doesn’t seem like I’m missing much.

https://www.gawker.com/celebrity/mess-alert-julia-fox-azealia-banks-are-going-at-it

Not that it’s celeb gossip but it feels more Buzzfeed than old Gawker.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 16 February 2022 18:52 (two years ago) link

They've had some decent essays recently. That's not one of them, but nothing about Azealia Banks is ever worth reading, so.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 16 February 2022 18:57 (two years ago) link

Gawker's current CSS/layout is bizarre. The logo is often halfway off the screen, layered messily under/over story images. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume its intentional like some sort of Raygun thing but man does it look like shit to me.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 16 February 2022 19:07 (two years ago) link

there have been some good pieces...the layout on my phone is readable at least.

symsymsym, Wednesday, 16 February 2022 19:17 (two years ago) link

Yeah I think they designed the phone layout and then called it a day lol

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 16 February 2022 19:18 (two years ago) link

when I clicked on the above link in iOS I got a screen that had "loading" flashing in neon green all over the page for 30 seconds, truly terrible design even on mobile

I went to old Gawker for the entire ecosystem - Deadspin (mostly Deadspin tbh), Jalopnik, Splinter. With all that scattered to Defector, Discourse Blog and Jalopnik (which is awful now) it's less compelling to bookmark the site.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 16 February 2022 21:39 (two years ago) link

I like the present day gawker but it’s definitely a less spicy offering, with some flavors I remember

mh, Wednesday, 16 February 2022 23:01 (two years ago) link

I still visit Kotaku because I’m a total idiot

snarl self own (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 16 February 2022 23:28 (two years ago) link

I occasionally visit io9 but I think one of the last decent writers left and it’s completely over

mh, Thursday, 17 February 2022 01:34 (two years ago) link

i still read kotaku too but it's extremely terrible. every story is like a book report on steam comment threads or streamer drama. polygon is even worse, they recap comic book storylines and give them newsy headlines--"batman's parents are dead anymore," "dr strange bought a puppy" etc

nu gawker is occasionally entertaining, kills a few minutes here and there.

i find their focus on celebrity gossip (like even moreso than Gawker 1.0) dull af and when they try to put on a more serious face, it results in something like this: https://www.gawker.com/celebrity/its-time-for-a-jared-leto-reckoning-morbius

shitty angle for pedophilia allegations - like if he was somehow more talented, it would be ok? lol ok

Not sure if they're trying to say:

"You've probably heard" or
"You're probably hard"

"by now you don't need to know anything more about"

This has been floating around today:

Why is it such a big deal that he had an extramarital affair? It’s certainly not a good thing to do — disastrous to his family — but it shouldn’t affect his ability to host a youtube show for idiots.

treeship., Friday, 14 October 2022 23:56 (one year ago) link

Ok lol. Interesting that SNL is a voice of sanity here.

treeship., Saturday, 15 October 2022 00:40 (one year ago) link

Although it seems like there was a ton of backlash to this sketch, which is interesting.

I can’t help but feel that this sort of moral outrage is disingenuous. Like people are pretending that they can’t imagine someone acting less than perfect for even one second of their life.

treeship., Saturday, 15 October 2022 00:50 (one year ago) link

this sort of moral outrage is disingenuous

why are you even bringing this up weeks later?

treeship., Saturday, 15 October 2022 00:58 (one year ago) link

fair enough. in any case, this is not the best venue for your outrage or scorn of such imo

mookieproof, Saturday, 15 October 2022 01:06 (one year ago) link

The interesting thing to me days after this topic has faded from the cultural hive mind is how crazy that comment section is in the snl youtube link. I am not really up on being a participant online, so I find a lot of modern stan culture baffling or skin-crawling. I get the same vibe from the comments on all gas no brakes vids, where there's this effusive landslide of indistinguishable praise for "true journalism". How could people be so invested in this that it reads like it got botted out?

Bongo Jongus, Saturday, 15 October 2022 01:07 (one year ago) link

Maybe they are bots who knows.
