Not always a big fan of Benn Jordan’s videos but this one is great.

This one is important.
How A NYTimes Reporter Collects Royalties From Hundreds of Musicians:https://t.co/W6GxIrUPCm

— Benn Jordan (@bennjordan) December 2, 2021

Ian Urbina’s book is legitimately good (assuming the reporting is trustworthy) so it’s wild to see him running something that looks objectively like a massive scam.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 3 December 2021 13:43 (four years ago)

Wow, that seems straight-up illegal.

DJI, Friday, 3 December 2021 17:03 (four years ago)

looked up Ian Urbina on apple music and the first thought I had was “well, this page is taking suspiciously long to load”

what a scamming shithead

mh, Friday, 3 December 2021 18:43 (four years ago)

huge bummer because urbina seems to do genuinely good and important work

Please take some time to read this article in the @NewYorker by @ian_urbina, from The Outlaw Ocean Project, which sheds light on the shadow immigration system stopping migrants before they reach Europe’s shores. https://t.co/Ka5YGPzFlG

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Friday, 3 December 2021 18:59 (four years ago)

yeah, I don’t know how things got to this point, but it’s just… a really weird situation?

I ran across a profile on the project where he seemed to imply that the music project would help fund his investigative reporting work, which would be cool if everyone was on board with that, but it sounds like the musicians were told something much different.

mh, Friday, 3 December 2021 19:41 (four years ago)

I think the only thing that really pushed me from “kind of dodgy” to actually irritated was this second project’s webpage:
https://thenoamchomskymusicproject.com/

So did they license Chomsky lectures and interview clips or… what’s the deal here

mh, Friday, 3 December 2021 19:52 (four years ago)

And if you click through to the EPs for that project, once again Urbina is named as a co-artist - presumably for supplying the Chomsky clips?

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Friday, 3 December 2021 20:15 (four years ago)

yeah, that is the really weird angle!

like it’s become the concept + samples thing, but he didn’t do the samples

mh, Friday, 3 December 2021 22:45 (four years ago)

Gotta say I'm not familiar with many of the musicians caught out by this but benoit pioulard just tweeted that he was

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Saturday, 4 December 2021 14:28 (four years ago)

well, regardless of how the rest of this goes, this seems uncool

They disabled my tracks on the streaming services without notice ; pretty cool

meanwhile urbina is just straight blocking everyone who calls him out, including artists who he seems to have ripped off

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Saturday, 4 December 2021 20:43 (four years ago)

Okay. Final Tweet of the day regarding this.

Here's a FAQ they uploaded (just today, after my video was released, as you can see clearly via Waybackmachine) that I've been accused of not referencing in my video. https://t.co/rrggSxKaOB pic.twitter.com/gErfC5YzaM

— Benn Jordan (@bennjordan) December 5, 2021

This might merit an ILM thread?

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 5 December 2021 03:54 (four years ago)

YouTube has started turning off the comments on my channel. I tried to find out why but nothing really makes sense. I upload songs from lounge records that most people don't care about. Is the issue the original songwriter credit?

JacobSanders, Sunday, 5 December 2021 04:09 (four years ago)

that’s a shame

mookieproof, Sunday, 5 December 2021 07:05 (four years ago)

This sounds fascinating but I still can't really bring myself to watch one of these Rick Beato ass Fantano ass videos where some dude talks at you.

(I guess I did watch one or two Ott videos, but that's p much it)

licorice in the front, pizza in the rear (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 5 December 2021 07:09 (four years ago)

That video showed up in my Twitter timeline, and I made a snarky reply to the effect that I'd rather read an article than watch a video, and a bunch of Jordan's fans(?) called me rude and ungrateful. The video seems like it is probably good, but I don't know who tf Benn Jordan is.

jaymc, Sunday, 5 December 2021 14:46 (four years ago)

I watched that whole video because of you guys. I suppose in prnciple I'm supposed to care about musicians not being given a shitty deal. Never heard of him either but he clearly put a lot of time (the value of which being the point) into filming himself talking in front blinken iights euroack and a green screen. I guess that's what he does and prodution values help to get views.

Years ago I licensed a track for a softcore b-movie spoof and was pretty cautious about the contract. I've never seen a penny for that but fuck it.

feed me with your clicks (Noel Emits), Sunday, 5 December 2021 15:09 (four years ago)

I had the thought that I’d rather read an article but then reversed it and thought about what I’d think if I saw someone saying “could you make this a video? I’d prefer it to an article” and I kept quiet

inevitably someone will probably write an article and probably have better excerpts of the contract, etc.

mh, Sunday, 5 December 2021 17:06 (four years ago)

there's an article about it here:
https://www.inputmag.com/culture/ian-urbina-new-york-times-spotify-music-royalties-benn-jordan-youtube

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Sunday, 5 December 2021 18:35 (four years ago)

the video is much better than any of the articles so far

tbh tho i suspect urbina's own photos of himself are doing at least some of the heavy lifting in his disfavour

🤷🏻‍♂️

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 9 December 2021 17:18 (four years ago)

the tl;dr of that piece is p much yes urbina did everything ppl say he did but if you assume he did it in good faith then it's clear he did it in good faith!

mark s, Thursday, 9 December 2021 17:21 (four years ago)

fair. both actors here seem untrustworthy. the journalist for obvious reasons (his own photos!) and then the youtube guy for his rather febrile twitter account. i guess i could dig into the facts but on the other hand i don't care haha.

I’ve been mildly prodding him on twitter and he’s really obstinate

should I ask him if he ran his substack terms and conditions past a lawyer before publishing on that platform?

somewhat glib youtuber: so! all this opacity! it might hide nothing, i'm not at all saying something suss is going on, but if nothing suss is going on, why all the opacity? very easy to clear this up ian!
easily nettled urbina defenders: the opacity means we cannot see if anything bad is going on so nothing bad can be going on, no of course we did not ask follow-up questions why is that relevant
ian urbina: *the maddening mask-like smile of the most prolific song-composer in history intensifies*
massed freelance plebs of the internet (me) all too familiar with how this always goes: !!! #️⃣ ⚡️ 💣 !!!

As mentioned by Daniel_Rf a year ago, our old favourite Ogmios' Zen School Of Motoring looks to be starting on the BBC tomorrow. I wish it had stuck to Youtube for a bit longer, we only got, what, three videos?

Does anyone else watch Steve Wallis/Camping with Steve? He posted the sad news that his wife ("Beautiful Wife", as he calls her and as viewers will know her from his videos) died unexpectedly a few days ago in a short and very emotional video yesterday.

I don't ever comment on YouTube, so just wanted to say here that I feel so sorry for him and hope he is as ok as can be. I've been watching most of his videos for a few years now and he's most definitely a YouTuber whomst is a long long way from terrible. He seems like a lovely guy with absolutely zero pretence and I really enjoy his videos of various camping escapades.
