i was sincerely enjoying the milk talk! i'm actually drinking milk right now, because of it :D

― just staying (Karl Malone),

What gin did you pick to dilute it?

I wasn't trying to sneer at the midwest, jon. I was also told that I needed to drink a lot of milk growing up here in Philly, and I always thought it was disgusting!

i mean prices for everything have gone up though where i am, milk is obviously a dumb red herring. i don't care if people call it inflation or what, or whether or not it's rich people pointing it out, or which party it benefits politically to acknowledge it, but it seems pretty clear to me that most people aren't experiencing an "economic recovery" of any kind atm. they were when the government decided to give out free money, for two quarters, but that's been over for a while now and all signs from the party in power are pointing to "we need to go back to squeezing regular people as much as possible"

I have recently tried to give up eating meat as much as possible (I tend to have one "cheat day" per week) and I have noticed my grocery bills going down, but not as much as I expected them to.

No one in my house drinks milk from a glass, but cereal consumption is high.

My children consume so much cereal that it inspired me to rediscover cereal myownself. Like? DAMN. Cereal is really comforting. Any time of day. Perfect meal: refreshing, hearty.

gin and catatonic (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:02 (four years ago)

Yeah, we've been doing cheaper meals even though we're both making pretty decent money at the moment, and I'm still sort of flabbergasted at how high the grocery bills are.

I'm a sovereign jizz citizen (the table is the table), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:03 (four years ago)

I haven't experienced supply or price problems, in part b/c my city is damn expensive anyway and I'm single. Gas prices are high, but they were high in 2018 or 2019.

Inflation's one of those things like baggage claim employees: the latter never get credit for doing well but instead get yelled at all day. Consumers love complaining about the high price of anything.

I also love cereal, with homemade oatmilk.

which, before anyone accuses me of being insane, is very very easy and quick to make.

sorry but this is horseshit. prices for everything have gone up significantly and demonstrably since the first half of 2020. it's the kind of arrogant and out-of-touch thing that democrats tell themselves before they lose elections.

milk sharpens you up for a bit of the ol' ultra-violence, no?

OK, I apologize. I haven't asked relatives with children because they're by varying degrees right wing zombies.

i don't know if it's gas companies squeezing prices based on perceived potential regulation or what, but the price of gas started going up significantly after the election, at least where i am - i realize a lot of this varies from region to region. i think it's a big part of why democrats are about to lose big time. working people just can't afford the costs of infrastructure upgrades that keep getting kicked down to them, so they're going to go with the other guy and kick the shit further down the chain. i keep seeing all this stuff from the dem/liberal side trying to pretend like this dynamic doesn't exist and it's frustrating.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:20 (four years ago)

Gas has gone up from two-something to $3.49 a gallon in NJ.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:21 (four years ago)

Is prices going up due to supply chain shortages because "just in time" logistics only works as long as nothing ever goes wrong, properly classified as "inflation"? Or just, like, a temporary shortage of a commodity?

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:24 (four years ago)

Some of the high costs (prices average $3.25 here) have to do with the real supply problems + finding people who want to drive trucks at shit wages + oil commodity traders.

The ideal solution with more than a +1 Senate majority without shit bird legislators like Manchin getting industry kickbacks would've been to keep the stimulus checks coming (they had an effect!) until COVID numbers are severely low (not likely) or, to be cynical, until the '22 midterms.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:30 (four years ago)

it really doesn't matter what the reason is, but do we think prices for this stuff are going to go back down? gas, sure, possibly, but i've ... never seen that happen for a food or consumer product in my lifetime. meanwhile there's no evidence of wage increases whatsoever that i've seen. in spite of all this talk of "worker leverage"

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:31 (four years ago)

many xposts - I wasn't trying to single anyone out, I was just annoyed by the incredulous level of response that was getting, like "this is INSANE can you BELIEVE the UNFATHOMABLE amounts of MILK these oddballs drink". It's definitely a terrible framing for the story CNN was trying to tell and obviously there are ways this particular family could cut back, but acting all shocked like this was some herculean, unheard of amount of milk consumption underscores how vastly different experiences are for people growing up in different pockets of the country.

It's a story made for Twitter.

"young Dalziel" is the actor on McDowell's right, who played the blunt but effective senior detective in Reginald Hill's "Dalziel and Pascoe" tv series.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:34 (four years ago)

jon just search and replace "arugula" to get a more coastal perspective

gin and catatonic (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:35 (four years ago)

"latte" works in a pinch as well

gin and catatonic (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:35 (four years ago)

Whether you're buying one gallon of milk or twenty gallons, the percentage increase is the same, so emphasizing the number of gallons purchased as adding up to "a lot of money" just confuses the issue.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 4 November 2021 19:37 (four years ago)

I can't believe I'm still talking about this but...The fact that milk is read as a wholesome, rural countryside-related, all-American product thanks to generations of marketing and farm subsidies is completely obscuring the fact that this is an outsized expense. In another context, we'd all get told that we could solve the financial problems of 70 years of wage stagnation if only we had the self-control to give up lattes.

CNN is so terrible. I mean no surprise but just wow.

xxp THANK YOU

Do you know how much the $1 value meal at McDonald's is when you have nine kids? $9!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 4 November 2021 20:24 (four years ago)

yeah, the milk consumption might be within (the ridiculous) government guidelines. the 9 kids, however.

If there really was an equivalent left wing media outrage generation ecosystem, this would quickly become a very serious investigation and there would be accusations of trump voters having more children just so that they could buy even more milk

just staying (Karl Malone), Thursday, 4 November 2021 20:36 (four years ago)

It’s all just so that when they’re putting the tenth gallon of milk on the conveyor belt, they can say “I have many children, and this is getting expensive. The milk consumption I mean”
