(Xpost) Bad Bakeoff fan here, yes I agree, and am finding Matt even more cringe this year. Bad jokes and forced whimsy have also been a (sometimes welcome!) part of the show back to Mel and Sue days, but now I find it Too Much, and I feel bad when the contestants have to interact and pretend to laugh at one of Matt’s bits. And I hate the shots of the contestants laughing in a “well at least someone found it funny” way. Still love the show tho!

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 17 October 2021 17:49 (four years ago)

worst is when they seem to actively startle the bakers and break their concentration --- shooting rubber bands at them or whatever. i'd be pissed! some people can jump right back into the zone with ease, but for the rest of us that could effectively amount to a minute or two of lost time, which is often make or break at the ends of these challenges. dislike!

So Maggie spent several episodes fronting about her love of old-fashioned English cooking, but couldn’t make a… sticky toffee pudding

Ah, but sticky toffee puddings are faux old-fashioned English cooking. Much like Werther’s Originals, they didn’t really exist till the 1980s. It’s sort of perfect that Maggie’s never made one before.

Alba, Sunday, 17 October 2021 18:47 (four years ago)

huh! i didnt know that

i wish sometimes they could just each make one family style pudding instead of naff individual puddings. no one ever makes those. but i guess they look good on tv

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 October 2021 18:53 (four years ago)

Turns out I’m wrong about Werther’s Originals. Although they arrived in the UK with a fake old-timey grandpa advert around that time, Wikipedia tells me they were introduced in Germany back in 1903.

Alba, Sunday, 17 October 2021 19:11 (four years ago)

Jurgen accepts yr apology

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 October 2021 19:16 (four years ago)

He’s the grandpa now.

Alba, Sunday, 17 October 2021 19:21 (four years ago)

That’s interesting! I assumed sticky toffee pudding was in the venerable tradition of stodgy school dessert sponges, the sort of thing that got served to Henry VIII in a cauldron under a nest of stuffed partridges.

But it also makes a lot of sense as a 70s/80s faux trad dish, for boomer chefs nostalgic about sinking everything in Bird’s custard

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 17 October 2021 19:23 (four years ago)

Thinking about it, the episode before, in bread week, also featured a recipe that’s got the veneer of being very trad but is actually very recent: ciabatta.

Alba, Sunday, 17 October 2021 19:31 (four years ago)

Maggie was just not up to scratch. It's right she went out this week.

George is very amiable and I love his hard work. He's also the archetypal "good flavours but terrible presentation" baker, and 14 years or whatever of watching this show means he'll never dig himself far enough out of this ditch.

Prediction: Chigs, Jurgen and Giuseppe for the final, one of the Europeans will win.

thing that i used to think was cool but now i just don't have time for (stevie), Monday, 18 October 2021 08:13 (four years ago)

Chrystelle, one of Jurgen and Giuseppe (there's almost certain to be a SHOCKING EPISODE where one of these guys face plants and is bumped), and then a wildcard

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 October 2021 12:15 (four years ago)

^^^ this seems pretty otm. Chigs seems like the logical wildcard. but I could easily imagine an episode where he hits something weird that he hasn't ever baked before, or has a disastrous freezer failure or something, and Amanda slips up past him --- she's been quietly doing really well the last few eps after the first couple being kinda rough iirc.

I Am Fribbulus (Xax) (Doctor Casino), Monday, 18 October 2021 14:01 (four years ago)

Freya seems a likely wildcard too

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 October 2021 14:33 (four years ago)

Freya's fun but seems like a classic mid-season dropout, who doesn't seem to improve as quickly as everyone else

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 18 October 2021 14:39 (four years ago)

they like having a youngster in the mix is my thinking. and this one's a vegan!

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 October 2021 15:22 (four years ago)

Is Amanda the cop?

Freya's great but at some point I reckon she'll come unstuck when the vegan alt ingredients aren't up to scratch.

thing that i used to think was cool but now i just don't have time for (stevie), Monday, 18 October 2021 15:37 (four years ago)

Really loving that there are no straight white uk dudes left in the game already

thing that i used to think was cool but now i just don't have time for (stevie), Monday, 18 October 2021 15:38 (four years ago)

Years of watching reality shows has taught me that whenever a contestant tries to make up for their deficiencies with a ton of busy work, you know that they're pretty near their ceiling and they aren't log for the competition.

Leee Tigre (Leee), Monday, 18 October 2021 16:58 (four years ago)

Betting on Lizzie to be out in next couple of weeks, work is nearly as sloppy as Mags

(not a spoiler, just started watching the show)

oh noes!

koogs, Tuesday, 19 October 2021 20:16 (four years ago)

Stevie jinxed her

edited to reflect developments which occurred (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 19 October 2021 20:23 (four years ago)

h not s! can anyone fix that?

edited to reflect developments which occurred (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 19 October 2021 20:29 (four years ago)

would eat all those German biscuits (apart from the marzipan ones)

koogs, Friday, 22 October 2021 19:22 (four years ago)

I think that was a fair 'out' this week, though Amanda has probably been weaker overall? Loving Giuseppe's work.

I wonder what happened to Noel? I guess he just got hot.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 22 October 2021 19:46 (four years ago)

yeah the german biscuit challenge was one of the most noshable in a while. ditto the regentstorte, mmmm. those fruitcakey bready things were not my bag at all though.

I Am Fribbulus (Xax) (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 23 October 2021 02:54 (four years ago)

I Am Fribbulus (Xax) (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 23 October 2021 02:55 (four years ago)

i love that jurgen tutored everyone in german baking <3

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 October 2021 16:21 (four years ago)

got v teary w this weeks elimination, caught me in the feels unexpectedly

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 October 2021 16:22 (four years ago)

I lol’d at Guiseppe’s legs-akimbo baking stance. Love George but he’s so out next week

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 23 October 2021 17:47 (four years ago)

yeah its either george or amanda next week

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 October 2021 17:51 (four years ago)

I still think Lizzie goes before Amanda. But yeah George-Lizzie-Amanda constitute the next tier to go, always with that wildcard factor where one of them could really nail it in a week that someone else blows it.

I Am Fribbulus (Xax) (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 23 October 2021 17:55 (four years ago)

oh yeh lizzie too

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 October 2021 17:59 (four years ago)

I’d like a Jurgen/Chrystelle/Giuseppe/Hermine semifinale to rectify last year’s great bollux. Bakeoff multiverse of mystery

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 23 October 2021 18:35 (four years ago)

it’d be cool if Chigs made it to the final w jurgs and giuseppe

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 October 2021 19:58 (four years ago)

Chigs is such a gentleman. I'd happily see him win but think he's a tier below Jurgen and Giuseppe.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Saturday, 23 October 2021 20:01 (four years ago)

The German thing was a bit shit maybe? I wonder if they had already decided before the series and Jurgen was an (un)happy coincidence?

The Kraftwerk thing was awful and given Matt's recent, uh, issues with accents and blackface etc you'd have thought they would have avoided the shit accents and stereotype bullshit.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Saturday, 23 October 2021 20:03 (four years ago)

They virtually had an Italian week earlier with both focaccia and ciabatta rounds in bread week. I thought that was weirder.

Alba, Saturday, 23 October 2021 20:20 (four years ago)

they had a Danish week when Sandi was a host… nothing is off the table

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 October 2021 22:41 (four years ago)

recall the hilarious travesty of the stroopwaffel technical that literally everyone failed

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 October 2021 22:42 (four years ago)

Let us also remember when they had Manon on for French patisserie week oh wait.

Leee Tigre (Leee), Sunday, 24 October 2021 05:07 (four years ago)

George's brainfart over what anniversary it was was hilarious though.

Leee Tigre (Leee), Sunday, 24 October 2021 05:12 (four years ago)

that was v funny

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 24 October 2021 06:00 (four years ago)

can I just say how cringe I find the mythologizing of the Hollywood Handshake, and how incredibly fucking smug it is and how everyone like gasps and oohs and ahhs and claps, it makes me like… embarrassed.

Warmed Regards, (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 30 October 2021 12:54 (four years ago)

Yeah, the first rule of Hollywood Handshake is: don’t talk about Hollywood Handshake. It’s all got too much. Though, like many things about this show, I like it in spite of myself. This doesn’t generally extend to Noel and Matt’s bits, however.

Alba, Saturday, 30 October 2021 12:58 (four years ago)

Star Baker doesn't mean anything either if you think about it. You could be out next week.

braised cod, Saturday, 30 October 2021 14:02 (four years ago)

What does any of it mean, ultimately? It’s all just built on sand. Life is just a soufflé.

Alba, Saturday, 30 October 2021 14:10 (four years ago)

solid episode, peaked with the technical in terms of stuff i would LOVE to eat. i bet some of those sausage loafy things are in fact delicious but i've not really had too many meat pies of this type so my taste buds had trouble fully connecting the dots. i could think of some of them as being sort of samosa or sausage-roll-esque, but it was still a mental reach.

I Am Fribbulus (Xax) (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 30 October 2021 16:14 (four years ago)

i know the handshake is overblown & mythologized… but crystelle’s genuine reaction was quite funny & charming. and her pie sounded uhmazing

amanda’s pie sort of looked like in medical dissection exams where you have to show an exposed internal organ lol.

still no idea what jurgen purple donut filling was but it sounded good!

glad i get george for another week but he’s definitely hanging on by the skin of his teeth ~prays for george~

when i first heard the baklava technical i was expecting across the board stroopwafel-level disasters but it seemed like they were given additional instruction in the method & not fkying completely blind, which was good. still, cruel enough.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 30 October 2021 17:23 (four years ago)

still no idea what jurgen purple donut filling was but it sounded good!

Ube, it's a purple yam used in Filipino deserts
