I decided yesterday that we'll have true progress when the hero of color can take down a white villain single handedly and not have to fight a blobmonster or a villain of similar color at the end of a movie

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 October 2021 22:07 (four years ago)

Brad, have you ever read the Fraction/Aja Hawkeye run? It is, with no exaggeration, one of my favorite comic book storylines ever and is the only thing I've ever read that has made me care about Hawkeye as a character.

It’s cool how they even use the lettering from the series (for the logo, etc.)

Also cool that Linda Cardellini is in the cast

(The “blaring Xmas music over chaos” thing still feels like a hella cliche to me, but I know it’s just a trailer)

it looks great

Same, but I’m a little worried it’s only going to be archival footage from Endgame, since it also lists Ava Russo as Clint’s daughter and, afaict, that’s pretty much the only acting she’s done. But, hey, would also love to be surprised with more screen time for Cardellini and happy she’s getting a check from this either way.

I just grabbed the collected Hawkeye volume 1 via my public library's book-readin' app. I never really cared about the character at all, and have a strong aversion to Jeremy Renner for some reason but I'm intrigued.

Two weeks ago I went over the bars on my bike and broke two ribs; I watched Black Widow last week, and my injury made me realize the ridiculousness of people falling off buildings and hitting every awning on the way down or getting hit by cars and just walking away. So I kind of love that Hawkeye ends up hospitalized on the third page.

joygoat, Friday, 15 October 2021 14:09 (four years ago)

A big fat trade of the complete Fraction run is coming out in a couple weeks, fyi y'all.

I think I might be missing one early issue? Regardless, I will buy this

My Fraction Hawkeye run (and my Saga run!) was just destroyed in a flood so I will also buy that!

(Also my 1963 run - meh)

Nhex, Monday, 18 October 2021 01:28 (four years ago)

OL, where did you see the announcement re: the Hawkeye trade? All I am turning up is the old omnibus.

talkin' about his flat tire (DJP), Monday, 18 October 2021 13:28 (four years ago)

Naturally there doesn't seem to be any official announcement on Marvel's own site, but all of the online booksellers have it up for preorder. It's subtitled 'The Saga of Barton and Bishop' (and is presumably just a softcover repackaging of the omnibus).

Gimme some skin! Because I don't have any skin. (Old Lunch), Monday, 18 October 2021 13:38 (four years ago)

its weird - a lot of my usual sellers don't have it, but others do. hope this doesn't mean it got delayed or something
also gonna go for the Aja direct market cover over the Ross. Ross' cover isn't bad but I generally prefer the interior artist's cover for collections

Nhex, Monday, 18 October 2021 13:56 (four years ago)

Nhex, where are you seeing the Aja cover version?

talkin' about his flat tire (DJP), Monday, 18 October 2021 14:21 (four years ago)

There's one here, but it's not on Amazon.

https://www.midtowncomics.com/product/2027460

Not Alex Ross fan, although his Immortal Hulk covers have been terrific. His Hawkeye cover is kinda dull, dorky and out-of-character for the contents, though. Weird choice - feels like the Aja cover would be a lot more attractive for a new audience.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 18 October 2021 14:30 (four years ago)

Marvel is doing a lot more DM-exclusive covers these days, I notice. Glad I ordered when it was first solicited, I guess.

Gimme some skin! Because I don't have any skin. (Old Lunch), Monday, 18 October 2021 14:43 (four years ago)

I think the Ross cover is kind of cool (though it doesn't fit the material), and Aja's cover(s) kinda boring (tho his art in the book itself is great).

juristic person (morrisp), Monday, 18 October 2021 15:09 (four years ago)

I like both a lot but I just preordered the Aja cover

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Monday, 18 October 2021 18:10 (four years ago)

I guess "Eternals" just had its premiere, and the usual hyperbolic quotes from randos are making the rounds. "Your MIND will be BLOWN AWAY! There will only be TWO types of Eternals audiences, those who think it is AWESOME and those that KNOW it is." Etc. But I did see more than one comparison to the DC movies ... as a good thing. So ... whatevs.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 19 October 2021 18:34 (four years ago)

I mean, if the comparison is "successfully evokes the weight and gravitas aimed for by the DC movies that the latter fail to consistently achieve" I don't see why that would be a de facto bad comparison

My friend walked in on the beachside fight scene trailer and went ' are they making another power rangers movie', lol, it does look kinda terrible, would like it to carry some weight and drama but it also could be a hammy, corny mess

just came across shirley li's review from the Atlantic, she liked it overall, 'soulful & refreshing'

Relatively pepped about Hawkeye, still not remotely excited about The Eternals, which is as much a failure of marketing as it is my own taste (or lack thereof), given it's sort of been rolled out for months now and I still don't care. Sure, Shang-Chi turned out to my liking despite me knowing or caring nothing about the character, but pretty space gods fighting CGI monsters with their laser eyes and fists just isn't drawing me in right now. I think I might sit this one out and wait for the next slate, all of which feature characters that entice me more (as far as any of these movies do).

Apparently it was getting review bombed on Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB or whatever arbitrary bs site was being cited, but overlooked in that debate is that most of the mainstream critic reviews currently aren't that positive, either, at least at this premature point.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:22 (four years ago)

for shame josh. it’s not about pretty space gods it’s ABOUT FAMILY.

poster of sparks (rogermexico.), Friday, 29 October 2021 13:40 (four years ago)

have never seen so much negative advance word on an MCU film as I've seen for Eternals. I'd chalked it up to sexism in the fanbase initially but reviewers are also not being kind. I admit this has seriously dampened my interest.

akm, Friday, 29 October 2021 15:25 (four years ago)

Watching the trailer again honestly maybe the only thing that turns me off about it is the powers they look like they have. They're wearing pretty costumes and they all have brightly colored lasers or weapons that are made of... "powers" that they make appear out of thin air. At a glance it looks like indistinct beams or sword beams or beam orbs or whatever. I do think I saw a dagger that was just an actual dagger for a second and not made out of neon plasma laser beams.

Evan, Friday, 29 October 2021 16:17 (four years ago)

It's also weird how heavily they rely on the guy shooting beams out of his eyes in the trailers, Cyclops did that for many X-Men movies so it's not like some unique new power previously unexplored in these movies.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 29 October 2021 16:41 (four years ago)

I mean I've got a ticket for next Thursday night, I'll see what happens. If it's a botch, it's a botch.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 October 2021 16:50 (four years ago)

Captain Marvel got mediocre reviews and was... fine, really

Not sure about the cast in this - Gemma Chan, Jon Snow and The Bodyguard all together is kind of a potential charisma-free zone.

Hard to believe this isn’t a critical darling.

Who cares about the Rotten Tomatoes score I came here for Angelina Jolie being badass

Pains me to say as a booster for the director but it just looks bad? Self important, snarky, uninteresting casting, hokey design, not much interest or connection with Kirby at all.

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 October 2021 00:26 (four years ago)

For all the mucking about Snyder’s already done, I still think there’s a fun fourth world pic to be made but the eternals, sans FF connection, is a concept in search of a purpose

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 October 2021 00:28 (four years ago)

And I suddenly realize I have been confusing the eternals and the inhumans. Why do the eternals? They are a retread of a retread of a retread!

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 31 October 2021 00:31 (four years ago)

Yeah me too. I’ve been reading Marvel all my life, and I’m not entirely sure who the Eternals are.
