With Fleet Week I'm not sure what the other parts of the city are experiencing, but on the north waterfront it's low fly-overs by the Blue Angels and various other stunt planes. They are so loud and close. It's unnerving

Dan S, Friday, 8 October 2021 23:01 (two years ago) link

SFGate describes this weekend as "carmaggedon" - Giants/Dodgers game, preseason Warriors game, fleet week etc.

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 8 October 2021 23:04 (two years ago) link

Everybody I know is complaining about Fleet Week, which is something I normally do, but this year it kind of feels like a sign of getting back to normal which comforts me. Still... glad I am in the east bay.

beard papa, Saturday, 9 October 2021 00:15 (two years ago) link

This is the first year I can remember that the practice runs are even setting off car alarms.

svend, Saturday, 9 October 2021 02:58 (two years ago) link

Aside from the nuisance factor, I’d guess the carbon footprint of all that tricky jet flying is probably close to that of the city of Berkeley for the day (maybe not including the pollution of all the commuters passing through Berkeley).

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Saturday, 9 October 2021 14:39 (two years ago) link

I only am reminded of Fleet Week when other people are complaining about it. It blends in with the Oakland Airport flight paths and the regular police and news helicopter sounds, because I live near all the freeways

sarahell, Saturday, 9 October 2021 18:35 (two years ago) link

Fleet Week is the worst.

I will take Fleet Week over the (probably still to come) week where the temperature is over 90 degrees

sarahell, Saturday, 9 October 2021 19:41 (two years ago) link

as well as the weeks leading up to and through 4th of July when it is shit exploding all the fucking time

Going to see DJ Seinfeld at the Independent tonight. Anyone else going?

DJI, Thursday, 9 December 2021 23:53 (two years ago) link

everyone in the bay area should see the Joan Mitchell show at SFMOMA

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 December 2021 00:56 (two years ago) link

also the pastel exhibit 'Color Into Line' at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, which is fantastic and which is curated by a friend

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 December 2021 01:21 (two years ago) link

The Joan Mitchell exhibit at SFMOMA is comprised of 80 or so works. There are many highlights and it is astonishing. My favorite is Sans Niege, a gigantic painting from 1969 which encompasses three canvasses and which takes up most of a long wall, and which is a summery reference to Monet's winter Vétheuil works. The gallery it is in also has a few other paintings that are among her best.

stay off the beach today

The impacts of a tsunami stemming from the underwater eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano on Saturday morning are expected to go on for several hours around the Bay Area, with some of the first harbor flooding seen in Santa Cruz. https://t.co/NhcLaNaQL1

Anyone want a couple of tickets to The Beths tonight at the Independent? I love them, but we finally roped our drummer into a rehearsal and I’d rather play music than watch music.

Ha, I'm doing this again. Anyone want some tix to spiritualized next Tuesday at the Fillmore? I have to be out of town for work. I'll give them to you.

Crossposting from the Aquarius Records thread:

Okay! So the long in the works documentary is about to get its premiere. If you're in the area or will be, June 3rd at the Roxie

If you're not in the area, you'll be able to watch live in early June as part of the festival streaming setup:

Soooooo, I'm scheduled to be San Francisco on Memorial Day weekend (and the Tuesday before it).

I will take any and all recommendations! Oh, and FAP if that is a thing in these current times.

Pre-Raphaelite Brah (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 4 May 2022 11:55 (two years ago) link

Well it’s mostly back in gear but COVID rates are rising so there you go. I’ll be out of town all weekend so alas, no FAP for me.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 May 2022 12:32 (two years ago) link

Hard to say this is a 'good' thread but it's a needed one.

THREAD. A rare thing is happening today: we are about to get a window into the secret world of how cops shape the news. There's a hearing this afternoon into how San Francisco cops manipulate the media through “strategic communications.” The internal documents are shocking.

here is a thing to do in San Francisco

http://www.tenderloinmuseum.org/upcoming-public-programs

Punk/Performance in the Loin, a gallery show & public program series that explores the intersection of punk rock and performance art in the wild and ragged Tenderloin of the 1980s, organized by the late, great video artist Dale Hoyt.

sarahell, Thursday, 5 May 2022 18:51 (two years ago) link

Going to be in SF for two nights in December at the end of a trip. I've previously stayed for a few days in both Union Square and the Financial District. Are there other neighborhoods with nice hotels that anyone would recommend?

doomposting is the new composting (PBKR), Saturday, 6 August 2022 16:22 (one year ago) link

Consider North Beach? Maybe the Haight?

(I don't know if those hoods have hotels but North Beach is nice to walk around, the Haight is close to Golden Gate Park's varied delights)

death generator (lukas), Saturday, 6 August 2022 17:29 (one year ago) link

How about the Hyatt in Japantown?

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Saturday, 6 August 2022 17:49 (one year ago) link

If you want a change of pace (and don’t need to be in SF itself for work), consider staying in Berkeley or in Marin (either central Mill Valley or San Anselmo rather than Sausalito).

that's not my post, Saturday, 6 August 2022 18:30 (one year ago) link

(gasface)

i like poly’s suggestion imo
never stayed at the kabuki but i love japantown & that area

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 6 August 2022 19:03 (one year ago) link

Thanks for the suggestions. My wife needs to be in SF for work. We're going to be in Big Sur before this so will have some nature time. Will check out Japantown - haven't been there.

doomposting is the new composting (PBKR), Saturday, 6 August 2022 19:04 (one year ago) link

I find SF geography so confusing. Things that look close together on the map I've thought of as far away and vice versa.

doomposting is the new composting (PBKR), Sunday, 7 August 2022 12:53 (one year ago) link

nothing in SF is _that_ far away in terms of distance, compared to other US cities -- the traffic and/or the hills are what make it feel that way. I remember visiting NYC ten years ago and realized that even though things were farther apart than in SF, it was faster and easier to walk places because everything was flat.

Idk what your transportation situation is, or where in SF your wife would need to be, so this could be a horrible suggestion, but I would suggest the Tenderloin (if you won't have a car) or Fisherman's Wharf (if you will have a car, because parking) ... there are some vintage-y motels a little west of there. Fisherman's Wharf is right next to North Beach tbh.

sarahell, Sunday, 7 August 2022 17:59 (one year ago) link

Yeah, the hills are some of the issue. Also the blocks seem very long?

We will ditch the car when we get to SF and probably just use BART/Uber.

doomposting is the new composting (PBKR), Sunday, 7 August 2022 18:32 (one year ago) link

I’d steer clear of Tenderloin and Fisherman’s Wharf. There are nice hotels close to Market Street on 2nd and 3rd that should have decent rates that time of year. The area is meant to support convention crowds, so they are convenient (close to BART), clean, modern, etc.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 31 December 2022 21:14 (one year ago) link

San Francisco today is likely the 2nd wettest day EVER recorded in 170+ years (records began in 1849). Since midnight we have seen 4.78" of rain. In the last 24 hours we have seen 5.19". Will wait for @NWSBayArea to confirm. Wettest 24 hour period ever is 5.54" on 11/05/1994. pic.twitter.com/GUiygHZBfZ
