i've had a test message in 'sending' for over an hour
it's very funny to me that facebook disabled my account about a week before this total collapse

was the disabling for breaking some rules (which is astonishing to me that someone could have accomplished this) – or was it a requested disablement?

Was just on phone with someone who works for FB who described employees unable to enter buildings this morning to begin to evaluate extent of outage because their badges weren’t working to access doors.— Sheera Frenkel (@sheeraf) October 4, 2021

It would be pretty hilarious if Facebook employees security badges operated through login with Facebook.

The next time the hackers do something like this they should give a secret heads up to all the restaurants that use Facebook to host their menus first.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 October 2021 20:40 (two years ago) link
seems like I remember a time long long ago when restaurants had printed menus but alas I was just a boy
― Clay, Monday, 4 October 2021 20:50 (two years ago) link
sounds like the outages may have been self-inflicted when Facebook engineers screwed up a BGP config change

lol, lots of restaurant Facebook pages just feature a snapshot somebody took of the paper menu.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 October 2021 20:53 (two years ago) link
According to u/ramenporn — who claims to be a Facebook employee and part of the recovery efforts—this is most likely a case of Facebook network engineers pushing a config change that inadvertently locked them out
Because of course.

Russians putting plan B into action, dispersing disinformation pamphlets from airplanes.
Yeah same with Google, most restaurant listings include pictures of paper or signboard menus. it's very funny to me that facebook disabled my account about a week before this total collapseI had just been reporting a bunch of trolls for spreading covidiocy on the Resident Advisor Insta page right before it went down and initially assumed they had turned the tables on me, for mocking them relentlessly. I do assume I will get banned eventually if I keep it up. Thinking about starting a campaign to pressure RA etc to just completely block comments on their accounts if they can’t be fucked to block the brigades of political trolls. However I doubt there would be much if any real impact of my efforts at all.

I thought this was good:https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/04/technology/facebook-files.html
Facebook is in trouble. Not financial trouble, or legal trouble, or even senators-yelling-at-Mark-Zuckerberg trouble. What I’m talking about is a kind of slow, steady decline that anyone who has ever seen a dying company up close can recognize. It’s a cloud of existential dread that hangs over an organization whose best days are behind it, influencing every managerial priority and product decision and leading to increasingly desperate attempts to find a way out. This kind of decline is not necessarily visible from the outside, but insiders see a hundred small, disquieting signs of it every day — user-hostile growth hacks, frenetic pivots, executive paranoia, the gradual attrition of talented colleagues.

Too bad I can't share that on Facebook.
they also said over a decade ago that going public was going to kill FB and no young people would use their system anymore and....well.....it's like Taco Bell, people consume it and don't mind that it makes them shit their brains out.

I would say ... delete that."
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 4 October 2021 21:37 (two years ago) link
Apparently the outage is the fault of a single "cretinous" employee who deleted the site while tying to scrub all mentions of himself from the internet in a fit of self-loathing.
No name as yet, but there's a photo.

My two teenage kids have not even considered getting fb accounts, and I don't think anyone at their high school wants one. That can't be good for growth.
― DJI, Monday, 4 October 2021 21:38 (two years ago) link
The death spiral dream sounds great, but a huge percentage of the world's population uses FB as the internet, full stop. Like, that's the only site they visit ever.

It does seem like the only reason young people use FB is to communicate with older generations. Given the way things are going the next big thing will probably be Telegram 3.0 after it’s been assimilated into the TikTok “multiverse” or whatever.

The kids still like Instagram. I couldn’t say what actual substantive difference there is between TikTok and Instagram, but it seems like most of the content on Instagram is reposted from either TikTok or Twitter. I know the young people don’t fuck with Twitter, it’s just for memeing. But unless there’s also close to a majority of content on TikTok which is reposted from Instagram, then I get the impression that TikTok is more popular with those on the front edge of the curve.
