he said this in the same thread:
I was in the room when it was pitched and laughed because I thought it meant he was great at sleeping— Mike Scully (@scullymike) December 21, 2020
but....
he just said he was in the room, not that he wrote it, and David Cohen is the actual episode writer, and Mirkin was the showrunner and his peers said that he ran writing sessions in one big room rather than splitting into multiple groups and worked late into the night. he also was the solo showrunner and had full creative control of the show, there's no way he wasn't in the room, so.....that angle don't work, sorry.

he was called "dictatorial" by many staff writers, wouldn't even be shocked if he was the type that nit-picked the actual wording of the dialogue itself.

Not gonna try to load this entire thread to find out but does anyone know if Nancy Cartwright has weighed in? The writer's intent seems irrelevant in this situation where we all first experienced the joke through Cartwright's delivery. It's pretty easy to change the meaning of a sentence just by shifting the emphasis.― Fetchboy, Tuesday, September 28, 2021 11:38 AM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

I thought meant Mirkin meant he wanted to fire Scully from a canon. A man flying through the air to his death, that's comedy.

Putting this to "rest" right now.
"Sleep, that is a state in which I experience a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occur involuntarily in my mind. Scandinavia, if I'd lived there in the period from A.D. 800 until the 1050s, a few years before the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, however? That's where I'm a viking!"

ok this is really weird because i literally just explained the viking thing to my partner about four hours ago (she picked the literal reading, ofc, and had trouble understanding the metaphor). it was probably the first time i had thought about this or talked about it in 10 years. and then i come home to find this thread revive!

I'm surprised no-one is offended at that podcast copying an entire thread to another medium. It reminded me of that event years ago where someone printed a bunch of threads in a book and caused a great fuss here.

if one could reduce this thread only to the posts posing arguments meant to argue in favor one's considered and sincerely held opinion, removing all tongue-in-cheek posts, posts simply attempting to amuse the ilx collective through some sort of clever wit, or posts on the meta-subject of the why anyone would bother to argue about the supposed subject of the thread, then I'd estimate the whole thing would be about 40 posts long and as interesting as a limp dishrag.

Interestingly someone in the YT comments details a Simpsons book that basically answers the question anyway.
M. Conway3 months agoThis is most likely non-canon, but I had this book called "The Ralph Wiggum Book." In it, there was a section that detailed a typical day for Ralph, in which Ms. Hoover puts him in time-out, where he literally dreams of being a Viking. Because of that, I've always considered the line to be interpreted literally.
Miles Majeran3 months agoHoly shit I own that book, also in the anatomy of Ralph page, in the brain part it says: “Where dreams of being a Viking and little else reside” checkmate.
