somewhere between #2 and #3 depending on how much sleep I've had

What about not worry too much about it and move on but intermittently remember it and feel embarrassed at random occasions years later?

I think my skin has got thicker over the years but I'm still prone to brooding on these things - and very much still feel raw about all sorts of things that happened years ago. As the Australian poet Les Murray put it 'I suffer from unconquerable memory'.

Mine is a two-part answer:1. Apologize repeatedly and in detail so everyone knows I know I made a mistake2. Remember the mistake forever

At the best: A few days of mental hell. At the worst: An immediate panic attack.

I generally do a "well THAT didn't work" thought and move on after whatever damage control is needed. When they were little, I taught my kids that everyone gets to make 10 little and 1 big mistake every day, and if you don't use them they carry over, but making the same mistake over again counts double.

Oh, that's great!

I reflect and move on as best I can.
It mainly depends on how big an error it was and how strongly it arouses feelings of shame and guilt. If reflection shows me a course of correction, great. I'll do that. If there's not a thing I can do to correct it or prevent a recurrence, but my stupid brain wants to keep tossing it up at me, then I keep batting it down until my brain stops forcing it forward. That can take a while sometimes. It's tiresome, but it's hard to control your thoughts and feelings when they come from autonomous parts of the brain.

mostly 2, although I can slide into 3 if I feel like my mistake has a negative impact on someone in my life

i mistake from one mistake to another and no longer care, life is a series of mistakes

Somewhere between 1 and 2 but the condition others mentioned above, about randomly remembering fuckups from high school or five years ago or whenever else, definitely applies as well.

My personal #1 goal at any job I've worked at in my adult life is to learn exactly how to correct any mistakes I (and often those whose jobs are adjacent to mine) might make in a day. Mistakes are unavoidable and human but they seldom need to be the end of the world. Like people at my job freak out when mistakes happen but I just calmly roll up my sleeves and put things back in their place.I wish I could figure out how to better port that skill over to my non-work life, where mistakes are more often a sign of what a goddamn stupid idiot I am.

think about THAT!
i did brain surgery on a guy once and then realized he was there to have his appendix taken out so I had to put his brain back but but a bunch of us had been playing hockey with it first so he was dumber than before
