Lol @ you guys winning a purity contest with AOC?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 20 September 2021 19:44 (four years ago)

I thought you were better than that TH

calzino, Monday, 20 September 2021 19:49 (four years ago)

what is purity? I mean a people's champion taking the decision to not hang out with rich arseholes who consistently are opposed to anything approaching socialism isn't any of purity, but it would be an improvement.

calzino, Monday, 20 September 2021 19:53 (four years ago)

apologies for this unwelcome UK interloping I'm possessed by the spirit of Fred tonight!

calzino, Monday, 20 September 2021 20:00 (four years ago)

Lol @ you guys winning a purity contest with AOC?

Well, she's already fatally compromised — I mean, an elected official? Who takes money? Uggghhh.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 20 September 2021 20:07 (four years ago)

I don't think it's a purity issue to recognizing the humorous irony in a "tax the rich" dress made by a rich person who doesn't pay their taxes.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 20 September 2021 21:09 (four years ago)

isn't the thing they were cited for not actually deducting taxes from employee paychecks?

you had me at "giallo" (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 September 2021 21:18 (four years ago)

there are also lots of gaps in the article that are never clarified, which was largely commissioned by the Post and Washington Examiner as a hit piece. Yeah, they provide links to the warrants, but not all, and the status of many of them they admit they cannot confirm. expert testimony is limited to a single quote.

not saying there's nothing to the allegations, but...in orbit otm.

you had me at "giallo" (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 September 2021 21:22 (four years ago)

As I read it, they were withholding and not remitting to the government.

Not withholding at all gets you more than a tax lien, that’s one of the things they’re using against Trump IIRC as tax evasion.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 20 September 2021 21:27 (four years ago)

"I don't think it's a purity issue to recognizing the humorous irony in a "tax the rich" dress made by a rich person who doesn't pay their taxes."

Milo otm! And if you have to clarify the situation with a "well actually" followed by tax code mumbo jumbo (which is how it scans to Average Joe/Jolene), you've already lost.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 20 September 2021 22:02 (four years ago)

the document the NY Post shared shows that the taxes owed are related to form 941, which is the quarterly reporting required for taxes withheld from employee paychecks. 941 tax liens can be for a variety of reasons, not necessarily withholding but not remitting taxes - it can also be for failing to file the quarterly form at all, or failing to withhold and remit any taxes. so I'm not sure how the Post knows that. the lien notice doesn't specify because all of that would have been laid out in the letters sent previous to this one, which either NY Post didn't make available, or doesn't have. and I don't see that anybody from the government commented (and they're never likely to).

these liens aren't exactly rare (a million of them get issued a year), and while they are serious and can level a small business, they aren't all willful flouting of the law. often they're a product of incompetence on behalf of the business. willfully doing it is a felony of course.

I mean I'm not saying there's not anything going on but there seem to be a lot of big assumptions made by the Post based on very little.

you had me at "giallo" (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 September 2021 22:05 (four years ago)

idk i'm a little more suspicious of taking a glorified tabloid (Post)'s analysis without question based on documents that don't say what the Post purports they do

you had me at "giallo" (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 September 2021 22:06 (four years ago)

so to then extrapolate this to a dunk on AOC, is, well...dumb

you had me at "giallo" (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 September 2021 22:06 (four years ago)

xxpost also nothing that specifies whehter the debt was paid after the lien was served, or whether the lien still exists. given how they can wreck a company, be surprised if it's not been satisfied

you had me at "giallo" (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 September 2021 22:08 (four years ago)

The tax lien paperwork linked by the Post lists unremitted amounts - ie withholding from employees but keeping it in the business account. Whatever the cause of this (incompetence or malice), I can’t imagine caring - it’s wrong and indefensible.

It’s a hit piece, yes, but that doesn’t make the charges untrue.

It means absolutely nothing to AOC’s great political ideology or future but it’s still a funny and ironic situation which was easily avoidable from the start.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 20 September 2021 22:19 (four years ago)

Sure, she's getting criticized for the designer being rich and not paying taxes, but it was worth it for going to the Met gala, which she was also criticized for.

I don't think she ever claimed the title of people's champion. That was Muhammad Ali. His title also came with a nifty belt he could wear. He sometimes hung out with rich people iirc.

it is to laugh, like so, ha! (Aimless), Monday, 20 September 2021 22:49 (four years ago)

oh you mean the democratically elected champion Muhammad Ali .. makes u think

calzino, Monday, 20 September 2021 22:54 (four years ago)

no, I meant the people's champion, Muhammad Ali. You can look it up.

so now you are stooping to using boxers hanging out with billionaires as a defence against a rotten and corrupt political system ... lol there is no cure for you.

calzino, Monday, 20 September 2021 23:03 (four years ago)

no, I was pointing out that your turning AOC into the people's champion was a way of setting a standard for her she did not claim to meet and then pointing out she fell short of that standard.

it is to laugh, like so, ha! (Aimless), Monday, 20 September 2021 23:05 (four years ago)

well it seems to be a standard she meets to posters on this thread

calzino, Monday, 20 September 2021 23:06 (four years ago)

We can all agree that AOC's next mixtape will be straight fire.

Bookmark removed, but calzino: I'm with you and don't understand how people can see this whole kerfuffle as anything but AOC being performative to a bunch of rich assholes who either felt better about their useless fucking philanthropy or rich assholes who hated her for it. That she tried to cast the designer as an "immigrant woman of color" (which is coded in identity discourses) instead of an unimaginably wealthy woman with shady business practices is absolutely up for discussion, because *she began the discussion that way.*

I'm a sovereign jazz citizen (the table is the table), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 15:15 (four years ago)

I'm with you and don't understand how people can see this whole kerfuffle as anything but AOC being performative to a bunch of rich assholes

see, the thing is, if this were like, AOC going to Bohemian Grove, which is a private club, then I would agree, but the Met Gala is a highly publicized and photographed event. Like, the photos of people's outfits worn to this event become fodder for astrology memes on instagram. The performance was not just to a bunch of rich assholes, it was for everyone. (I don't think it's necessary to reiterate the discussion from last week which went into this in depth.)

That she tried to cast the designer as an "immigrant woman of color" (which is coded in identity discourses) instead of an unimaginably wealthy woman with shady business practices is absolutely up for discussion, because *she began the discussion that way.*

And here I totally agree. However, I don't see this inherently as a criticism of AOC, or something that makes me think less of her.

I'll spare folks the "tax code mumbo jumbo" unless there's interest.

peace, man, Tuesday, 21 September 2021 16:56 (four years ago)

The only take I really have on the AOC dress thing is that it's all symptomatic of the grossly insufficient levels of left power in government in the US that we are kind of forced to "let it all ride" on a few highly charismatic figures like Bernie and AOC and then wind up having to micro-analyze and micro-adjust our personal positions on shit that doesn't really matter at all. It's also just a symptom of the way we are so used to conflating personal/consumption/celebrityish issues with actual politics that we aren't even aware we are doing it. But so is the fact that we have this thread in the first place, I guess.

I feel like if you engage with this shit in any way you are already losing. But it also just makes me tired to think about, so maybe I'm missing something.
