Obviously it's still early and I by no means wish to handwave away the damage and destruction, but it seems a very encouraging sign that the levees and barriers seem to have held and performed well against this one.

indeed. i was feeling the schadenfreude possibility increasing every time i read about how officials weren't too worried about flooding this year because of the $15B in infrastructure since Katrina, etc

How did you fare, WmC? Hope you're safe!
― Fetchboy, Monday, 30 August 2021 22:28 (four years ago)
Either it's slowed down so much that the worst of it hasn't hit us yet, or it completely blew itself out getting here. We've had rain all day but not much wind. The temperature drop has been wonderful. How has it gone for you? In the power outage zone?

that NOLA webcams was surprisingly chill, granted I only skimmed it but I was pleasantly surprised.
my friend's house there (Alex Chilton's old house) is OK apparently, said friend is riding it out in Ohio.

Somebody sent me a link showing that the wind was up seemingly everywhere in teh Northern hemisphere. https://earth.nullschool.net/?fbclid=IwAR0KaE-UyPYrHlvV6ZrSS1kn561hBlg7qAOMFnB7jFKKrgFztPs_XFIwb8Q#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-2.55,51.47,7114/loc=-9.094,53.264I haven't looked at a global map like that during a storm before so i can't tell if that is anything odd. just seemed like wind was up across all the coastal areas of Europe and the East Coast of the States. Could be that that is what happens in a wind like today. I had just assumed that a wind would be more localised but I'm not a meteorologist. Also interesting to see that wind patterns seemed to form a calm area over a county to the North of Here, not sure if it was Mayo or Roscommon. Just that winds seemed to be forming a pattern circulating it and therefore the wind above it seemed to be way lower than elsewhere.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 7 December 2021 17:39 (four years ago)
The wind sounded like an approaching train here (New York State) last night. Interesting that it's up all over.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 7 December 2021 17:54 (four years ago)
may be normal to have that amount of wind going on . Seems to be a lot above like 20KMH and quite a bit higher. I don't know what an ambient non storm pattern looks like really. I assume if we have a atmosphere we are going to get some movement but seems to be quite a bit right now.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 7 December 2021 18:06 (four years ago)

So we already know that the next five are:
Storm Corrie Storm Dudley Storm Eunice Storm Franklin Storm Gladys
which don't really sound very stormlike names. I mean hope this is a reflection of their personalities and they will all arrive peacefully and leave at a polite hour .Not heard what the damage so far has been.
Or if the Mirror is the best place to go to to find out what storms are called.

a ‘hurricane’ is by definition tropical, so this is just a big fuckin storm hitting western alaska

partner's family lives in Cape Coral, where everything is cul-de-sacs interpenetrating with mazes of canals. we're following everything from afar right now, pretty fuckin bleak tbqh. most of the fam is away on vacation right now, but their little brother and his kid are holed up there somewhere (with his phone off all day, of course). hoping for the best.
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 21:46 (three years ago)
yeah, good luck Casino's partner's family! My sister just moved to Cape Coral. She is not there now so that's one less worry. I spent a day at Boca Grande last year, pretty beach and cute town.

we're doing ok - thankfully it's supposed to weaken a lot, looking like upper trop force winds/hurricane gusts. not gonna be fun, but it's what it is. more worried about my aunt, who is in Ft Myers and got thwacked today, but I know she has been hit hard before and knows what to do. still - the videos are concerning in many coastal/low-lying areas (which she's not, thankfully).
hope you're ok Chris, and that your partner's family is ok, Doc.
Alfred, don't even have to ask, I know you're busting out the Campari.
